battleship is like chess. Many who've played thousands of games will catch onto that real quick. Also with the sonar scan ability it ruins it even more as they'll just ping that after the second failed attempt to find the dingy.

In a normal game, it might work. But with ability, they might accidentally find it.

when I was an avid player on Yahoo games I pissed off so many people because I aimed for the most common placements first (like in chest, the first move that's so common that chess masters will reply "aah, the (insert name) maneuver?" and then counter them perfectly). I've had a few games that due to the 'shoot again rule on hit" i won in three turns. If i didn't find and finish them quickly then I would have somewhat random attacks but in essence I was going for a limiting hiding spot dragnet pattern where I would go for the middle areas of say, a 5 lateral x 5 Horizontal area (with the 3x3 not having been touched around that center), and then when I had all 5 L x 5h (or the biggest ship down) I would then focus on 4x4 (or 3x3 or 2x2. dependant on my ship's left and if I've hit more of their ships than They mine). Which those who caught on real fast learned to bunch around their ships to get me but after many players started doing that when they saw my Username i had to adjust and did so at a reasonably quick pace. BTW, This game with the different ship configurations makes the whole idea of mine a little harder, which makes Battleship new and exciting for me again... I may just have to get the game and try it.

Yeah, dragnet patterns are why I don't go corners either. I don't even dragnet pattern starting AT the corners as it wastes too much time. I mean, if you shoot A1 then A2 and B1 still needs to be shot to see if a corner ship goes that way. So i just hit A2 and then B1. As if I miss on those then A1 is obviously a miss. also, I should mention, I don't dragnet in any specific pattern as I don't want to play a long drawn out game. I just wanna win, and fast. The speed is the excitement of the game. it's the one time that I am not methodical. So when it's shapes I know (classic Battleship) i'll go hunting and dragnet trying to find the most common placements and each shot will help eliminate more than 1 ship hiding in that spot. Because while I said I may do a A2, B1 two rounds, the next two could be C3, D1 (or A4) or some completely different area I want to start dragging because I have a hunch that the opponent isn't actually around the upper left quadrant.

yeah.. Battleship is akin to Chess in some regards. The start is the placement and then a strong poker face.... urrm.. or voice in the case of just Voice chat chess. The other strat's are knowing common placements, Pattern Recognition, and knowing when to hunt and destroy compared to just pinging (1 hit) ships for a faster endgame. Also there is a bunch of luck and listening to gut instinct.

No. All battleship iterations has 2 points as the smallest possible. Battleship is about tactics (placement and firing patterns), pattern recognition (more so with those different shape boats) and the sheer joy of getting lucky. a single point ship (like a buoy? what's that good for?) makes no sense. and it would DRAG OUT a game forever. As Battleship (classic) has a 10X10 grid. that's 100 spots it can hide. while with a 2x1 (dingy) ship you that leaves 50 spots you need to hit JUST TO FIND IT. it's why the Dingy is considered as the secret power unit as it can hide forever and decimate entire fleets. I mean.. think about it a 3x1 ship (of which most itereations have 2) you now have to just hit 34 spots to find. 4x1 ship is only 25 spots to find. 5x1 ship is only 20 spots to find. Even with the different ship configurations it's the same level of chance to get, just ads more flavor in how it will have you attacking the wrong place because you forgot it's not the Classic set up or not in the orientation you thought it was. and if they ever make a Battleship with a 20x20 grid (400 spots) with bigger ships I think it would be quite interesting and you will have the 2 spot ship removed as the 4 or 5 spot ship would be the new needle in a haystack. but it leaves room for much more interesting ship configurations and better ship art (more so if the ships are like a diamond shape but the wingtips are 1 space and the front/back is 2 space This would be more like if we saw Battleship in space iteration.. which I think is a thing)
