Happy Almost-Valentines Day!
Pirates love ships and so do we, they're very important to One Piece. The ships in this story do a lot for world building, lore, and tell us a lot about their captains that we may not otherwise learn. They're insanely important.
Oda has spent a lot of time researching history, painstakingly designing each of these. And in return today I'm going to painstakingly analyze each (named) ship in the story, and reveal some mysteries hidden in their designs - including some theories I have...

As a former navy sailor I loved hearing u go into depth about this stuff. We don't have klabaitermann but pretty much every one of our ships that aren't new has a ghost story or is said to be haunted. Mostly by sailors who killed themselves or by jumping overboard. It doesn't make news or anything but it happens all the time.

42:55 law had to get his sub coated anyway. Fishman island is 10,000 meters down, even the strongest submarines dont go past 1,000 meters.

Love this kind of content, but one small addition/correction While Rafts are the simplest form of water vessel, they aren't necessarily always the smallest of the 3, and aren't wholly made obsolete by boats. Large Rafts have been in use since Ancient Egypt at least, and in 1896 the largest Raft ever recorded was built spanning nearly 300 feet wide, and 1500 feet long. It was a Log Raft large enough to carry Adam Tree Wood.

You forgot the Rocketman! It being a runaway sea train fast enough to move across the surface of the ocean without a need for rails technically qualifies it as a ship so long as it has fuel. Also honorable mention to Water 7 itself, which Iceberg intends to turn into a ship to stop it slowly sinking with every year's Aqua Laguna, even if he isn't quite there yet.

Small correction for Moria he did build a full crew for himself in the past however they were mostly wiped out when he attacked kaido in Wano. The zombies are (or at least are implied) the corpses of his former crew and a few other strong bodies he grave robbed along the way. It's unclear if Thriller Bark was his ship at that time but it seems unlikely as you'd have to get it over/under the red line

43:18 as we saw at the start of the world summit arc one pirate crew used a submarine which was intercepted by coby and helmeppo and they made it sound like subs were a recently utilized technology. Perhaps law was just ahead of the curve over everyone else.

3:58 One correction about waterproofing: you don't necessarily have to add a water proof layer before putting a boat in water! It's common for wooden boats to leak a little bit. Any uncoated gaps will soak up water, making the wood expand and close the gap. That's also the reason why wood is used even in modern damage control. Also, modern boats often are more complex than a bowl in terms of buoyancy. To prevent sinking purely due to the weather, bags or chambers are sealed with air inside. The main thing which sinks boats and ships these days is failure of the sealed bags or chambers

Fascinating video, so much effort and work. It was fun to see all the different ships in comparison. A small note about Eustass Kids ship, personally I would describe it as medium-sized and not small. In the manga panel where he encourages Luffy & Law to jump with their ships from the Wano waterfall, you can see that his ship is/was more than twice as big as the Sunny, Law's polar tank is like the size of the dinosaur skull on it's Front & with 31 crew members, he also has a rather larger crew by OnePiece standards.

About why nobody uses a submarine. Please remember that, to cross the Red Line, you need to get to Fishman Island. Which is about 10 km underwater. And thus you need a VERY tough ship to even get near those depths. Even in our world we don't have the right technology to accomplish that completely.

Oh wow, that's an oversimplification of the physics involved in sailing! Even old ships aren't just pushed by the wind and steered by the rudder. A sail is just like a wing on an airplane; it generates lift perpendicularly. The shape of the hull, keel (and daggerboard if applicable) also create lift, but in another direction, which compensates most sidewards movement. Steering a ship is mostly done by adjusting the sails, since the rudder is often too small compared to the forces on the sails.

New comment here, when you talked about the anatomy of a ship. That is the standard for ships but knowing how One piece is set in the time of pirates and age of sail. The ships are pretty simple (in design) compared to what would appear in the industrial revolution and the appearance of iron clads and then full steel ships. Still a good video over all
