Finding an internship may not be the most enjoyable task, yet I spent the time applying to 358 internships this year trying to find a software engineering internship. In this video, I guide you through the steps I took to discover suitable internships and share insights into how I managed to apply to such a significant number. Additionally, I highlight a few valuable lessons I learned throughout this process.

You have to see how things work from the company's point of view. There is not one approach to hiring people but many. Some companies publish job offerings for a certain period of time. When that period finishes they go through all applications in order to give everyone a fair chance. Usually that's the case with government agencies or organisations that have very formal processes. Other companies might be more 'agile' and respond quicker. It also matters which persons are involved. HR/ recruiters and people from the department that needs new people. The latter will do the recruiting stuff on top of their normal work. I can't give you much advice on how to layout or write your CV. The main issues are that preferences vary and they will change over time too.

"At least have the decency to give a generic response..." Yea they do that less and less. Not long ago, like late 2010s you'd still expect to not be ghosted, but now that's standard, or at least half the time. There's just too much noise being generated on both employer and would-be employee side. Drive-by applying for jobs like LinkedIn's "EasyApply" contribute to it as well.

Pro tip: Start in contracting for an IT Consulting firm. Build experience. Don't waste your time trying to get into a W2 position from the beginning

@zacharyh.4662 3 ай бұрын
@@marksvids1156 I actually agree with what @schrodingerscat3912 said completely, to elaborate, this means taking a position with a firm that will hire you for contract work like TekSystems, Robert Half, or Insight Global to give some examples. It's generally much easier to get hired on contract for a staffing/consulting company and many of the positions are contract to hire as well. This is the route I went when I was in my last year of college, ended up getting hired by the company when my contract was up.

This is exactly what I’m doing. I started working for an IT consulting firm in Summer 2021 as an intern (just after my first year of college), and have continued working there as an intern ever since, even during school semesters. I’m about to graduate this Spring, and I’m planning on working with them for a couple more years full time while I figure out what I want to do next. Let me just say, the experience I’ve gained has been absolutely invaluable. I’ve done tons of real world programming and tech work through the internship. By the time I graduate this spring, I will have a CS degree, 3 years real world work experience with LOTS of project work under my belt, and I also have a job lined up for working full time with the company after I graduate. All the while, I’ve been making money the whole time, so I haven’t had to worry financially throughout school and have no debt. This is the way to go. If you are done with school and have no experience, this is also a great option to get some experience, since software engineering and big tech companies in this market value experience WAY more than education. I knew this back in 2021, which is why I made landing an internship a priority, and it’s paid off tremendously.

My first student jobs I either got by connections, temp agencies or directly applying/ going to the company. It's tough in a job market like this but things will change again. Faang has reached adulthood now. If the bean counters take over then that's it. You'll rather want to look elsewhere for tech jobs. They already cut and reduced stuff that made them stand out among corporate IT.

So some advice. Im nearly complete with my first year as a Jr. Web developer however i have 20 years of previous work experience in culinary and 10 years of that as a chef who has conducted thousands of resume reviews and hundreds of interviews. Ill keep this short with only one main point as there is a lot that one can go into on this topic. This is also not a smack on the content creator as he seems like a good guy and im not exactly sure how he formated / sent his resume or what his skills truly are. 1) Dont spam your resume out. Its very easy to spot a MVP (minimum viable product) resume and it does not show any care or thought put in that would attract companies. Do your research on the company. If they are a good fit for you then make your resume and cover letter focused on their needs with your skills that align to those needs detailed out. Also try to mirror the verbiage and style of your resume to the companies core values and public communications. Quality over quantity goes a long way. It also will help you stay focused and more confident during an interview because you will be more prepared as you have studied the company in more depth. Bonus tip: Soft skills > Hard skills

Just a reminder that in the majority of cases if you're struggling with imposter syndrome, it's probably right. The frat culture in big tech and subpar coding standards have brought us to a new low in the quality of tech, and the hustle of grinding neetcode/leetcode instead of actually just building useful things isn't helping. The interview process at FAANG has created a perverse incentive for people to try to "crack the interview" to get at a cushy well-paying job, and not even think about being good engineers. Build cool shit and be interested in your profession, and you'll get a job. Money chasing has ruined tech.

I think that mainly this layoff phenomenon hit the most in cities like Los Angeles, New York etc. Places considered "cool" with many people moving there and cost of living (and automatically salaries) higher. I moved in Tokyo 2 years ago, and the situation here is shitty as well. I still have contact with my ex collegues in Italy ( in ITALY, man! ) and they are having less problems in changing job around than the guys here in Tokyo. Really I can't see the time to move back in some almost unknown city of Europe , with 15 / 16 applicants for job. I will leave the coolness to the others 😅😅😅

Look dude, you will get your foot in the door sooner or later. I remember in the early 2000's newsweek or time magazine had on the cover "The End of the American Programmer". Turned out to be 100% BS as programming chops have been huge and even more highly desired with cloud and automation. This field shifts over time, but, like grass and bushes, it grows and people are needed to cut them. The work is there. Get your foot in the door, even if it is entry-level. My first job was peeling stickers off tapes as they came back from offsite backups. Bins of them. I wasn't too happy but then a position opened up as an operator (the actual entry level job I thought I was getting to start with) and I've had a career ever since. One big complaint I have about 20-somethings is that you all think you deserve a big paycheck right from the start. Older dudes would put us in our place when we were in our 20s and told us to go change our diapers if we piped up. Time for someone to say the same to you. You will be fine, just keep at it.
