UberEats, Skip the Dishes, Door Dash, whichever one you choose, they all come at a cost that not many people are talking about. One that effects your wallet, and the planet. This month was definitely eye opening for me and I hope it makes you think as well.

I honestly think that is so funny because I have found it to be easily to find vegan options with DoorDash at least. This is in comparison to trying to find a restaurant using Google and looking through menus individually not compared to home cooking. It might be the city I was in or maybe the way doordash is set up... like using DoorDash I would end up finding new restaurants I needed to check out.

I'm not going to lie, I definitely have had those nights where the motivation to cook is beyond getting out of bed when I'm already comfy. I would say I order take out maybe every two-three weeks. But, after watching how much waste I could be preventing, I definitely will lower my consumption of take out food and consider going to the restaurant before ordering Postmates! Thanks for calling out UberEats and how bad they are for restaurants and small businesses to continue using!

This piece inspired me to say what I’ve been doing for about a year now: when taking food out I’ve been BRINGING MY OWN FOOD CONTAINERS TO HAVE THE TAKE OUT ITEMS PUT INTO. Most places agree to this; I don’t do takeaway that frequently though, I should say. Another I do when I have coffee out I BRING MY OWN COFFEE MUG, which more people need to do AS WELL!!!’ That helps a little I think...🤔

Great video buddy! Sorry it took so long for me to finally watch it! That can't have been easy to commit to this challenge knowing the amount of waste you'd be generating. But even though I don't eat out a lot and I get food delivered even less, it still resonated with me to be even more conscious about what waste my convenience actions might create. So all in all I reckon it'll be worth the mental pain! Dope video and editing as always SANNNN.

I appreciated this video but I am not sure about the ethics of purposely creating lots of waste even to prove a point. I have an idea for a challenge that could be beneficial to the environment--picking up litter every time you see it for a week, to show how much litter we pass by on a regular basis
@AnimilesYT
@AnimilesYT 4 жыл бұрын
I am also not sure about it. But I don't think he made the wrong choice. Even if it changes the behaviour of just a handful of people it'll end up reducing the total amount of waste created. Sometimes these things have to be done. I'm just glad that plastic bags are banned where he lives. This brings the point across while still keeping the plastic waste at a manageable amount.

I disagree. Sometimes people have to be able to visualize in order to change their habbits themselves. It took me doing something similar with my husband to change our habbits. We ate out A LOT. Not every meal but pretty dang close. It took a very long time for me to figure out a way we could change. As we had no stove to cook on. In fact it was a call to my sister and asking her if I paid her to make us dinner if she would. I then had to sit down and show my husband each meal break down, plus gasoline. It was very close to his numbers. I also view the "save the planet" view that my husband does not. But with the break down he agreed to eat over with her. We saved at least $300 a week in just eating dinner and packing leftovers for lunch.

Do people remember the documentary supersize me? Showing the extremes and the absurdity of things in world that are right in front of peoples faces but they can't see unless they are shown all of the absurdity at once. This is literally like one step away from being a modern art piece that's a commentary on the modern system. He just needs to turn the trash into something in a public space, or create some type of performance with it. (Like a KZfaq video...) Thinking about this as 1 month of trash completely misses the point.

We order in Pizza from Papa Johns once a week (or less), but if we order Indian food we have ordered it through the ‘Just Eat’ app, I’ll have to investigate how ordering through that effects how much the restaurant actually get from what we pay. It would have been interesting to see what effect those two weeks had on your cholesterol level, probably not great! Looking forward to the ‘living without a car’ episode. Be happy x

I always try and do my best to take my lunch to work but when I am in a jam (sometimes I can't leave my desk) and I've forgotten, I will admit, I have broken down and ordered Post Mates or Uber Eats. I've always done it with an eye for the least amount of waste - a lot of sandwiches cause they tend to just come in paper wrapping - but even then it's really hard and SOOO expensive. Thanks for making this. I think there are so many people out there who don't even give it a second thought.

I think there is kind of a solution to this. I think Korea do a pretty good job on some item. They give you actual bowl and collect them after you finish. I think this is kind of a good solution to save waste and feel more premium by not eating on a cardboard box. However, this still does not solve the carbon footprint of delivering and collection.

This video hit home for me because I experienced this first hand. I used to live in a space where cooking for me was almost impossible with the roommates i had at the time and I used to eat take out a lot and my health was in the decline. Gained so much weight to to point i question was it worth losing all that money to have an unhealthy lifestyle. Sure i admit the waste is the big issue but there’s more than waste. There’s the waste of your health for the connivence and that you might or might not eat the whole meal and let it rot in the fridge Because i found people don’t usually like to go for leftover food. mostly i found that people dont cook because they’re afraid of failing at the first try or had bad experience with cooking. So i see it in both sides and try to help people learn that cooking isn’t as scary or as hard as people make it.

I loved the video and I'm shocked by the result. I want to show my whole family and show them the many benefits that come with cooking from home. Keep up the great work!

There is a grey area for example im stuck 6 miles away without a car or time to get food and I only order healthy because its not convincing its more me being in a situation where I cant access my basic nutrients. But that being said that happens ever so often and I never order from my house because I can just cook food like you said.

this makes me wish there was a zero waste market in my area. thats not a lot of trash for 2 weeks in my place unfortunately. i do however walk to and from the grocery store and use reusable bags so thats a plus i guess

It'd be great for you to do a video on Grocery Services like HelloFresh, because they claim to be more environmental by reducing food waste, and having cardboard packaging etc. But I'd love to see how it compares to actual home cooking and going to a grocery store instead

Could you do an experiment where you put different types of materials underground for 6 months and then dig it back up and inspect the results?

At my college we have a reusable to go program where we can get a container when we enter the dining hall, fill it up, and then return it the next time for a new one, and they wash it for you. This has been a great resource but then occasionally they’ll try to give you plastic cutlery with it which seems to defeat the purpose, also my school has at locations that are a more “fast food” type they have a tray for plastic straws and a tray for paper straws, this seems rather counter productive. At said locations, they also won’t let you give them your own container for smoothies, they say it’s for sanitary reasons which I don’t really understand since all they have to do is pour the smoothie from the blender into your own cup, if companies like Starbucks or other chains let you bring in your own cup, I don’t see why this is an issue

Hi Levi & Leah! Have you done a challenge like this focused on food delivery services like Blue Apron or Hello Fresh? I'm very curious what the waste and carbon profiles would look for them. Thanks for this video - it's reinforcing my determination to cook and eat at home - and carry a homemade lunch - as much as I possibly can.

UBER EATS AND OTHER DELIVERY SERVICES SCREW OVER RESTAURANTS!!! I work as a hostess/to go orders and the restaurant I work at uses Doordash and the app doesn't give an option to tip the restaurant (this is in the US where tipping is advised). But, you can tip the driver. So I take the Doordash order, process it and send it to the kitchen, they do the cooking, I package it up all nice for the driver to pick it up, and then we get noting in return. ALSO 75% of the tips I make go to the kitchen because they're the ones doing the actual cooking. So on the app you can tip the person who drove the food to you, but not the people who made and prepared the food for you? There are nights where I have sold over $1500 in to go food, but because the majority of that is from Doordash orders, I'll go home with maybe $5-$10 in personal tips after I give the 75% to the kitchen. It's absurd.

WOW. That totally sucks. I had no idea but now that I've read your comment...*of course* this is a major issue with delivery services like Uber Eats. Thanks for posting.

Another way of looking at it, if you were eating 3 meals a day (which I'm assuming you did) for 2 weeks that would be 42 meals! So if the average person is eating approximately once a week from UberEats for a year this would be similar to their cost/C02/waste breakdown, which to me $542 still sounds like a lot for the year for take-out meals!!

The difference between paying for take-outs vs home cooked meals is astounding!.. And the bit about uber eats is news to me. I'm sure skip the dishes and other delivery services will tell the similar story. So they chatge the restaurants, we pay the delivery fee AND we also tip the delivery drivers 🤦‍♀️ wow... Thank you for an entertaining amd informative video, although you definitely had to take one for the team this time :D
