I think you were getting the wiggle from the wheels in the rear having their own power- causing it to wiggle at joints. The rear has less mass, and it can push itself faster.. And the path of least resistance to move forward is wiggling side to side. Turning down their power or turning it off would potentially help it.
@sidspooki

I'll check this out, I messed around with the settings more than I show on screen but I never did mess with the actual power settings while in the VAB. I'll look into it.

I agree, that should probably do it. Similar problem to having too much mass towards the front landing gear of a plane. Might be able to add breaks to just the rear wheels as well if the power settings don't fix it. Just enough drag to keep it in place.

@@sidspooki haven’t played KSP in a while but if you can apply a small amount of braking on the back train it might help as well.

@@sidspooki definitely having less power in the back would fix it. Even giving the last one a tiny bit of brakes would help tremendously, just as people do IRL with trailers/campers. Always have the brakes slightly applied, keeping it from accelerating faster than the puller.

The speed snake thing is a thing that happens IRL with poorly balanced trailer setups. Every trailer needs to have 60-ish percent of its weight, at least, in front of the frontmost axle. Your trailers are set up on two axles which makes them inherently unstable. Think of a trailer's wheels as "drag" and the weight as regular mass - you need the center of drag behind the center of mass for an aircraft to be stable, and the same goes for the trailers. If you have successive trailers on the back of other trailers, you need to make sure that the additional weight of the trailer is supported close enough to the axle that the majority of the trailer's effective weight is still *in front* of the frontmost axle. Point is you should only have rear wheels on your train cars. lol.

I believe that speed snake thing that's happening is because you have the center of mass of each car somewhat behind the center of the wheelbase. Like how the center of mass is averaged by the location of each part and how much it weighs, if you average the location of each wheel and put a mark where the average position is, the center of mass needs to be in front of the center of contact with the ground, that way the wheels are dragging the mass, not the mass dragging the wheels, or you get that oscillation.

Also the issue of not being able to take off might be due to the positioning of your back wheels. Since your main elevators are in the rear of the craft, they're trying to push the back of the craft down to move the nose up, but it's not going to be very effective if they have to fight the landing gear. Move the rear landing gear to just behind the center of mass and it'll be a lot easier to take off.

Nice vid, well done. I thought that your problem with the swaying of the train looked familiar, so I did some digging. Turns out that this is a problem in real life as well, and trucks towing heavy loads need to be aware of the phenomenon called "Trailer Sway". This is a problem caused by weight distribution in the towed object. I'm not an expert or anything, but typically, people avoid the overcorrection force of the trailer by having the center of mass as far forward as conveniently possible. In essence, the mass should be placed upon the tongue of the trailer and forward from the axel There are many examples of this phenomenon that you can find online. This is not to say, of course, that other forces were not causing or helping this problem, but I believe the main culprit is Trailer Sway.

Nice vid, thanks. I built a train a while ago that I got about half way to the north pole. The technique I used to have a stable train: 1 each car is a separate vessel with a single axle on the rear, the front of each car is supported by the preceding one. 2 the rear of a car has a 'hoop' made of cubic, and the front has a hook 3 the train is spawned all connected together by seperators "shift-offset" to the side with some clearance between the hooks and loops and ground supports for kraken prevention 4 stage all the seperators and ground supports at once, all the cars settle on each other, it may take a few tries 5 you can hardly use motors on the cars so you need a real locomotive to pull it, it's not a metro, it's a real train. 6 braking is done by having feet on the front of each car that get lifted when the hook and loop tension up from the pulling. and drag when you slow down. done with hook geometry. I made a train that was something like 40 cars long with this technique but the longer it gets the less likely it will last. Cheers!

To get the plane-car off the ground easier, you need to put your rear landing gear further forward on the center of mass. This will allow the plane to pivot around the CoM when you pull back on the stick. It's not pivoting now because it can't. You are fighting against the weight of the vehicle which is all forward of your wheels.

This is a known occurence that happens when one has a long enuf structure that travels fast enuf. And judgin by it affectin such a small train, in gonna guess it was made even worse by the loose connections between the trains which let it move a bunch more

So from my *expertise engineering* the wobble may be due to the couplers not having and anti-oscillation measures. Along with that it could be caused by power being transmitted to the rear wheels. Try having secondary cars that do not have any drive train power. Finally, your plane; you might have an issue with taking off due to lack of flaps providing the upward thrust you need.

I've fixed the plane thanks to suggestions about moving my back wheel behind the center of mass. I'll try out your train tips too!

Maybe do the connections & wheel placement more like how trucks have them?

There's a goodb reason for sitting in the front of the roller coaster is to keep the butterfly stomach feeling at a minimum. The searing in the back is for experiencing more of a fun ride. None of it has to do with being "cool." Maybe that's a personal thing you have.

I love that people are still have derpy fun in KSP in 2022. With elevators in the back of the plane, to rotate and take off, you're essentially pushing down on the back of the craft and rear wheels are a fulcrum. Get too far behind the center of mass and it'll take way more force than you can provide to make enough torque to rotate skyward. Get the wheels behind the elevators and it becomes physically impossible. Two easy ways to solve it: move the rear landing gear closer to the center of gravity and hope you have enough clearance to avoid a tail strike or add canards which would pull the nose up instead of pushing the tail end down. For the speed snakes, try biasing the weight balance in the cars slightly forward of their geometric center. and maybe stiffen up (or completely disable) their suspension.

I just paused the video to comment about the plane's landing gears, but didn't had to. Excellent explanation.

Making these videos are my breaks lol. I work fulltime, after my wife goes to sleep I play video games and/or editing.

I think the issue with your plane not taking off is because you placed the landing gear too far back, it preventing your from pitching up.
