I think the reason for it being awkward is the lack of understanding of what a furry is and lack of enthusiasm furries tend to be outgoing and social (introverts can be in the fandom as well though less common). A furry is also a person who likes animals with human characteristics and may portray the liking by drawing or fursuiting

If you are wanting to do this again and get better interactions with the fursuiters here are some tips: they have blind spots so they can only see straight in front of them. You do want to be loud because you can hardly hear out of the heads. A good way to start a conversation is not acting like an animal because they will think you’re crazy, you can ask who made there suit or if they made it themselves.

I think Ben forgot they can barely hear inside their suits and that only half of them could actually speak fluent English 💀 And normally they don’t talk inside their suits because it ‘ruins the magic’ for little kids and other people that think the furries are cute :)

Furries are also in a way ‘playing a character’ and speaking in their real voice would break their acting - sort of like mascots at a football game. Not many people take that too seriously though and many furries talk normally :)

Just FYI, a lot of the suiters that you may have thought were too busy to talk may have just not heard or seen you. Vision and hearing are quite impaired in a fursuit so many fursuiters won't notice you unless you are literally right in front of them lol
