A throw back to our Chinese garden! A year ago I bought four chickens from a local farm. They were not allowed to keep birds, so they had to get rid of them. I saw my opportunity to finally raise chickens - something I've been wanting to do for a long time. In this video I tell you some of the good and the bad that I learned from having chickens for a year.

They probably live as long as they want by laying eggs. My friend’s chicken lived for quite a period of time. Miriam named them so they will live. In Germany, my friend’s goat gave birth with couple cut baby and her mother said, “ Don’t name them, they will be ended up on the table.”

I grew up in rural area as well. Local chicken are not only tasty but costly. Their poops are smelly as heck. My parents reared chicken, duck, cattle and this was one reason I don't like much chicken and milk. We also had pine apple farm and sun flower farm.. You know rice farming is common and our rice field yield in a year could feed us for two years. My parents were philantropic and they'd always distribute our farming products to those who need it. I miss those days.

I too, started with chickens and knew nothing about them as their caretaker, but learned as I went along. Yes, they all have distinct personalities and some are more docile than others. I lost a few myself, and because I looked at them as pets as well as food givers, it was not easy to accept especially, when a predator eliminated them. My favorite hen was Rosie....who was attacked by the neighbor's dog. I was able to stop the attack, but only after the dog ripped Rosie's back off. I took Rosie to the vet, and after spending $500 on her, she healed up and became my most protective chicken of all. Last time I had chickens was a few years ago, until an ermine/weasel attacked one of them in the snow. We were lucky....and it did not harm the hen, but that is when I decided that having chickens in the woods was too dangerous for the birds. I gave my six hens away to a farm with many other chickens. I would love to have chickens again, but they do require a safe area where they can forage for food and not be attacked by predators. Loved your story!

I used to run a rescue /rehome for caged hens. It was so satisfying seeing them come out of the barbaric crates and take a dust bath for the first time, and watch their feathers regrow and once they are healthy and strong again, they lay tasty eggs instead of the bland ones which those who buy supermarket eggs are used to.

Chickens can fly up and sleep on the tree too. My friend brought chickens and she gave me eggs which is super good. The egg yoke is orange color and firmly standing up. We call them running chicken so the eggs are different. She also let them running everywhere. And the family ate the chickens too eventually. So your lost chicken properly end up on someone’s dinner table.

We have been keeping chicken for a few years now. I can no longer eat the eggs from the supermarket. I can actually taste the chemical taste in the egg from the shop bought eggs. Our own free range eggs are sooooo much nicer... Way to go if you have the space.

We have a flock of eleven, they are all very gentle and kind. Some people say “is is just their personally” if a chicken acts aggressively. But what they don’t know is that our personalities develop from experience. If you show they love, kindest, and respect they will show you the same in return. You should see a shift in their behaviour. ☺️

Wow, you are a good farmer too.. hahaha.. very interesting to watch! Yes, the poos is definitely something dirty! But can be good for veggies! Some chickens do peck on us if angry but I m most afraid if the hens are brooding the eggs for the eggs to hatch! That type of hen is definitely not to be agitated nor can stand near to its nest!
