Wow lol that is quite involved. That mold is a very lucky find I figure! Do you plan to build any additional catamarans after finishing yours? It seems like a good opportunity to recoup money since you already have the molds. I'm just playing with the idea of building a solar powered catamaran houseboat yacht. Solar power seems quite possible and solar panels are cheap. From what I've researched I figure for a one off build it would be much easier to use cold molding, build using foam and fiberglass without a mold and hand / wet layup without vacuum bagging. Thanks for the videos!

I suppose if you want to build your own catamaran, the idea of building your own mold, would be a pretty cost prohibitive thing to do? Unless, of course, you build the mold and plan to use it to form up another 5 more catamarans for yourself or others? Do you think its feasible to make own mold for a 1 off project?

Rustie, thanks for the comment. The Cat is Grainger design No 86. I have the full set of plans and specs and have just had the whole project re-engineered in H80 foam core including bulkheads and deck. Original design was strip cedar plywood but with the the tooling now produced it will take on a very different substrate form. Glad you picked up on our videos. Lots of fun to come , and some bloody hard work. Gle coating and first few layers now on the hull so straight into it. We are factoring on a total weight of 6500kg dry and approx 8500 wet incl fuel and water.Engineering has been done to 15-20knots. All the best Rossco.

I am about to build my own multi-hull, the only benefit I could think of in using a mold, is if you want to build more than one, otherwise it is more of a mission than using frames and strip planking.
@LifeOnTheHulls
@LifeOnTheHulls 6 жыл бұрын
Paul.Yep probably correct however having Considered every option,kit ,cold molded,strip planking the mold for us certainly cut down a lot of time for me.The logistics of owning a mold certainly has challenged me due to the suze weight and simple scsle..If there was a second it would be with significant mods which may well come ,who knows.
@AirCrash1
@AirCrash1 6 жыл бұрын
I have been planning my build for over 10 years and without the internet and learning from others who have gone first, I would be going to sea in an unsafe boat. I looked at using a mold but the problem was moving the mold, as you have discovered and then moving the boat, I got quotes from transport companies and it worked out that it would be cheaper to rent a dockside warehouse for the build period than the cost of the mold, renting a crane to release it from the mold, renting a crane to put it on a truck, transporting it, then a crane to put it in the water. I want to go do the Southern Ocean thing in my boat and bridge deck slamming in heavy seas is the biggest problem with large catamarans, I have been racing them offshore for the last 30 years so I am going to build a tri-maran instead which are easy to transport and because you have 3 hulls for space then you can make the bridge decks with netting which allow the water to pass through the bridging area. No slamming in heavy seas. That's a Grainger designed cat you are building yes? If I had a nice mold and a big bank account I would probably gone for one of his designs though I think you are mad hand laying it all up, why don't you infuse it or prepreg it, you have a mold you would save so much time, even a person who builds boats every day can never get an even thickness and strength applying the resin by hand. I used to make and repair boats by hand and then I got vacuum machine and now do infusion, even for small repairs, you save a fortune on resin and the quality and finish you can get with infusion is awesome.
@LifeOnTheHulls
@LifeOnTheHulls 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like as great plan.love the tri idea and believe they are superior in big seas.In my case the mould purchase was extremely cost effective,transport considerable but not riduculous and i already own equipment tools and pumps etc.I have invested about a grand and a month into a 15 tonne lifting chassis so will be able to launch and load and move mould as required.Crane hire here is a merely $AUD250 per time,so very reasonable so all up all I can recommend is plan every stage and replan then plan it again as it is incredible the curve balls even your build will throw at you.The idea of pre preg cant be an option simply no autoclave big enough for a 43 foot cat any we here in this state let alone australia,hard enough ginding a shed within 100km of my build big enough..Infusion considered but would have required an extra several months work modifying and enhancing flange on mould for seal,then consumables and possiblility of failure.I have vacuum infusion capability but this mould is pre 2005 and struggles to hold vacuum as laid up with low grade resin and not infusion grade . Australian Maritime Safety require quaility assurance schedule ie iso for any survey boat built with infusion,similarly chopper guns may not be used here either so without a complete iso certification rating this is not an option for my build,and stripped wooden boats cannot be ratified under new survey regulations.I have a strict approved engineered lamination schedule and am using messared cloth weights and sray external mix machine that minimises excess resin.This build although Grainger is H80foam core and will already be in the vicinity of 1.6-1.8tonnes lighter than the original production boat. I have built a few strip cedar and tortured ply sea kayaks and small boats over the years and amount of hours put into them turned me off the many thousands of hours you will spend stripping your hull. Looks like you have many ,many years of fun ahead and wish you luck and look forward to your video series.Cheers
@AirCrash1
@AirCrash1 6 жыл бұрын
You should go check the latest prepregs out they are now manufacturing them that only require temps of 80 degrees to cure, no autoclave required, you pull a vacuum on it, then construct a tent and use hot air blowers to pump the tent with hot air. Could save you a lot of time and money when constructing structural components. www.amtcomposites.co.za/products/prepreg-reinforcements/se-84lv-toughened-epoxy-prepreg
