Watching your channel from the UK, sorry to hear the engine sounding like it does. It's hard to tell from the video but I personally have seen and heard 2 Cummins engines with what I would call a sound similar to a light rod knock actually turn out to be bad camshafts. The valves were in spec but the cam was found to be out of shape with uneven wear and pitting. I can only tell you what I know for sure, I've seen it and heard the difference with a new genuine Cummins cam fitted. I'm thinking the sound of a bad cam is because the follower is not contacting the cam on the amount of area it is supposed to so it gives off a knocking sound, I tell you they both sounded like a rod knock but maybe more like a rod knock in a smaller engine, not real heavy like a Cummins knock. I know it's a pain but you can check how the cam looks by pulling the sump. I usually go under with swimming goggles on and a flashlight, then I put my hand up and run my fingernail across each lobe to get an idea how they feel. I've seen plenty that were in bad shape. Stay safe buddy, great channel.

Seeing this kinda confirms my fears for my truck. I have a 99 24 valve that lost oil pressure for maybe a minute coming down a steep section of a power line road and started making noise. As soon as I got home, I changed the oil and filter, and added some Lucas stabilizer. It still builds 50 pounds or better of oil pressure. I thought about trying to replace the bearings in the truck, but after seeing that the trans and clutch all have to come off to do it, I think I'd rather just pull the engine and open it up proper.

@kevinoscarson29414 жыл бұрын
Knocks are clearance or pre combustion(timing). I would confirm timing. Pull injectors have them tested-Confirm fuel delivery(pull the pump and actually have it tested by a real fuel shop). Looking at the rod bearing they clearly got hot. It is possible they were new but the rod journal is no longer round(plasti gauge wont show this). The only other cause is gear train or accessories drives. Honestly I really hate buying engines that you can not load test. This always seems to happen.
@ppump24valve534 жыл бұрын
P pump 24 valves make more engine noise than any other Cummins, because of the mechanical pump. I put new bearings on the engine and mine runs right like yours. And I’ve got 30 k miles on it now with compounds, runs like a champ. Go to about 16 * timing n it should run great. And also get the injector pop pressures set for p7100. That will also help for noise. But that’s just the nature of the beast-
@VBELTandSON4 жыл бұрын
Gotcha far as I know stock timing would be at 14. No tag on this set up so idk about this exact pump. But I bench tested those injectors they hit around 3900psi pop off. Might order a fresh set all done up and 100hp

I heard your knock Everytime you ran it. Did you isolate it to one cylinder? Think about the p pump being its on mini engine too. There is a cranked and lifters in it that rotate like an engine. Good luck.

You mention not passing on myths and other inaccurate information about these trucks...well one of the biggest myths is the reputation of the VP44 injection pump and how it is a unreliable part. If Dodge had included a “FASS” type pump as OEM (and located it back by the tank) the VP44 would be as good as any pump Cummins has ever put on the market. Don’t let it sit w/o running it and keep pressure and clean fuel and it would last as long as any parts on the engine. But people bad mouth it w/o knowing why they fail.
@VBELTandSON4 жыл бұрын
Yup very true. I know first hand the trouble with a vp44. Fass pretty much fixes the issues but buying a truck new with one the original lacked in many areas that needed upgraded. My dad has been thru 3 vp44s. Running a fass 95. That’s why I’m not a big fan of them. Ps he bought truck brand new and went thru the issues when no one knew what was going on. Error from dodge and Cummins. Major error
