I Bought A Big 'Ol Truck. Is The Motor Toast? 1983 Ford F250

After years of hauling engines (and one motorcycle) in the trunks of sedans, I finally bought a truck. A rusty 1983 Bullnose Ford F250, 4 speed, 4 wheel drive. The best part? The "invincible Ford 300" engine. Too bad this one sounds like it's about to blow to pieces. Nonetheless, the truck pulled itself home and the engine's still ticking. I was a hair away from throwing in a used engine until I checked off every box and found that this motor may not be bad after all. This is just the tip of the iceberg on this rig, plenty more videos of it to come.
Chapters:

20:25 - Low oil pressure, but maybe the noise is just loose valves?

25:13 - It drove me home, maybe I can get a little more life from it
26:28 - Rebuilding the carb, even if it needs a full motor
30:31 - Cleaning/checking the spark plugs
32:39 - Carburetor rebuild take two
39:12 - Checking the spark timing
40:15 - A great discovery, is this just a tuning issue?
40:55 - Limiting the vacuum advance in the distributor
42:40 - Going for a drive WITHOUT the engine sounding like it's falling apart

I had an 82 f250 same powertrain in high school only in blue exterior/interior. I bought it for $500 and beat the ever living tar out of that thing. It still ran like a sewing machine til it lost spark. I didnt know mechanics so well at 17 & didnt have any place to store it so i ended up junking it. Now i know it was likely the dura spark ignition box or module. Wish i had that old girl still today almost 25 yrs later...Thanks for helping bring back the memories!

Yeah all of those old fords sound the same as i had one for years and the worst thing for them is to sit and not drive them foot on the floor and those straight 6 300 you just can’t kill them the body will fall off and apart long before the engine dies i have literally pulled 4 full hay wagons and a load of firewood in the back and she loved it mine was only a 2 wheel drive but i had tire chains and i would go places that 4 wheel drive trucks couldn’t but yeah you have a good old truck give it some Lucas and a oil change and run her wide open and she will love it lol find yourself a good body and frame and you can swap it over but otherwise you have a good truck for work or whatever you want it for especially because it is 4 wheel drive put some 44 mudders on it and run her in the mud she will take it

I fell in love with the ford straight 6 after I worked on the '78 f150 that's my channel, knew I had to have one. I'm definitely going to be putting this thing through the dirt and mud soon enough.

Those 300 six were excellent engines with great histories. As long as they had pretty good compression, they would run and run. I was so pissed when they quit making that wonderful reliable engine.

I had a 88 F-250 with the fuel injected 300 six and the HD granny 4-spd. We heated exclusively with wood back then and I cut all of it. I could load the bed with green oak and hickory all the way up to the top of the cab and overload a 16ft trailer behind it and the truck just didn’t care. I imagine if a state trooper ever saw me he would have thrown the book at me. It was so simple to tune up and change the oil in too. I got into a serious financial bind through no fault of my own and had to sell it. I’ve missed that old truck. I have a 3/4 ton Chevy Silverado with a 5.7 SBC in it but it’s not the work truck that old Ford was.

I hope I can get my sons to watch and be inspired.I can't help but wonder if you had some schooling in mechanics, as some of your fixes are more technical than they appear. I loved watching your work here Simon. What a great revival. I didn't figure out what the cure for spark knock was. I have never heard that phrase. Many of the things you did here, were the kind of jobs I watched/helped my Dad do back in my younger days. I was never going to be the kind of ace mechanic he was. Anyway, I will try to look up spark knock. So happy it turned out that the engine is a good one in this truck. It's a great truck right? I love the straight 6, 4x4, and then two major creature comfort items that look factory, AM/FM and A/C. Super cool truck. Thanks again. I will keep watching.

Hey, great video. Could you please explain how you knew that adjusting vacuum advance was needed?
@SimonFordman
@SimonFordman 4 ай бұрын
With the base timing set correctly, the engine would spark knock under light-mid throttle (when the vacuum advance kicks in). Without the advanced connected, it didn’t knock at all, so I adjusted the advance down some. With factory components, the vacuum advance was probably set fine. I think there are other issues causing spark knock, maybe lean running. It’s something I’ve been meaning to look into further. Limiting the vacuum advance is more of a temporary fix. Hopefully my explanation makes sense

So ignition distributor was causing the knock? Vacuum advance trouble right?
@SimonFordman
@SimonFordman 3 ай бұрын
I still don't know if that was the actual issue. Limiting the vacuum advance made the knock go away, but I have a hunch that the engine is running too lean and that's the real problem. I plan to investigate it soon
