A cool idea I've done a few times: paint a wall an matte color you want (something mid-tone tends to work best but you do you) and then when it's dry use a stencil to put up a pattern in a satin or semi-gloss version of that same color. It's a fun way of adding visual interest without being overwhelming or too busy. Works great in hallways where it's hard to put art because of space!

Saw the carousel horse; immediately thought Bluebell. Do not be in any rush to fill rooms with stuff just to have things in them. Take your time and see how you feel living in the space, and eventually you will come to know what you want. Also, it is much easier and faster to clean an uncrowded room than one stuffed to the gills with furniture, especially when cleaning the floors. Have fun and enjoy the process of making the house yours in personality and spirit.

A silly suggestion for dark rooms: get some nightlights. Yes, they won't be enough to make the rooms useful, but it will be enough to make them not pitch black at night. Enough to not run into things and maybe get a forgotten phone.
@dawsie
@dawsie 10 ай бұрын
I hate the dark always been scared of it even at my age, I have night lights in every room I have lamps setup to sundown to sunrise. I have woken up when we lose the power in the pitch black when you live in the rural area there are no street lights nothing, no moon no light that simple, starlight is stunning out here but it does not give you any type of light at all. So I just love nightlights and there are so many cute and fun ones out there.

I also like hanging fairy lights (or any other type of lights with long enough cords) along the walls. It gives you low levels of light distributed throughout the entire room (depending on how you hang it, and the color & brightness of the lights), and it looks nice & whimsical! It’d be real cute to hang fairy lights along the walls, and then add those glow in the dark star stickers on the ceilings!!

This is a sad story, but your carousel horse reminds me of my Aunt Sue. Her eldest son, John (my cousin) was born about 8 months after me, but he was born with a heart condition and had surgery literally hours after birth, and had many surgeries after that. He had such a rough physical life, but an amazing spirit. He died in surgery in our senior year of high school, and one of the last photos of him was during one of our senior trips to a park called Canobie Lake, on a carousel horse. He looked happy and it was beautiful to see that, so Aunt Sue started collecting carousel horses in all forms, until we actually scored an actual carousel horse from an old carousel that was dismantled after a park closed. Aunt Sue had many, many carousel horses all around her house, and she passed away several years ago, and we each got one of those horses at her service. If it were my horse, I'd name her Auntie Sue.

One, I love the pure joy on your face when you are rocking on the rocking horse! Two - you own the house! If you want to drill off center holes so you can have bird lights that make you happy in the room you sleep in, go for it! If worst comes to worse, you can always fix them if you need to move the lights. Just keep some of the paint for touch ups when you eventually repaint!

@@ashuri89 Hahaha... totally true! I remember getting my first pair many years ago. Worked under them till about 10pm and was unable to sleep till maybe 2am. I was so *wide awake*, it was spooky. That was back before constant screen use was a thing, though, at least for me. So I wasn't at all used to blue light, late in the evening. I'm definitely not as sensitive as that anymore, but I still wouldn't recommend it. Just because you can fall asleep, doesn't mean, your sleep is deep and restful, after all. That being said...those things are a life saver in winter, when it's basically dark at 6pm. So much easier to see small details and match colors correctly.

I totally get why you hate the tiled counters; however, if they are really bugging you, they can be re-grouted and sealed so they won’t stain or you can buy coloured pens to touch up the really discoloured areas. This will make them less bothersome to you until you have the time and money to have your dream countertops installed.

I love this, very much in the spirit of “I’m an adult now and I get to decide what that means” lol. My suggestion for living room, bedroom, communal spaces: hang stuff on the walls. Photos, art, floating shelves with some of your fragile items. It will make the rooms feel more like your own and you can add more furniture later if you feel like you need it or you find a really cool piece. But tbh I think minimal furniture in those high traffic areas is easier to live with.

Talking color or white on the ceiling, I’ve done both. If you love the color put it on the ceiling too. For me it was like being wrapped in my favorite comfy quilt. Don’t be afraid of color. It’s only paint and can be changed. For the guest room: Desk in the room. You can put a dresser in the closet. Guest probably won’t bring a whole wardrobe of clothing needing the whole area. Idea in the laundry room maybe add a puppy bath. Raised so you don’t have to lean over a tub or bend down in the shower. These are just my thoughts for sharing. Whatever you do it will be fabulous! Your home doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. It is YOURS. Nothing has to match. If you love it, it will all come together. Congratulations on the play button! I’m so glad I found your channel. I’m currently redoing my bedroom and office at the same time, so saying I’m excited for these videos would be a MASSIVE understatement!!! Edit: congrats on 100k! And that doorknob you liked can be very easily installed on any door that doesn’t need a lock. As long as the existing doorknob has the screws exposed, all you need is a screwdriver and the new doorknob, they come with instructions! It takes about ten minutes once you’ve got the hang of it

Doodlebug! There was a book I read as a kid called "A horse called Doodlebug" and I fell in love with that horse. She was a little pony who was in pretty sad shape (very shaggy and unkempt) and the little girl bought her because she didn't want her to go to the glue factory. She groomed her up, and it turns out she was a beautiful and valuable show pony who was stolen.

An easy way to paint designs on your wall in those styles you describe is to use a projector! Just take the reference picture you like, project it on the wall, and you have an easy pattern to follow! I've used it a bunch for projects and it looks really nice and really professional even when you have very little skill, and you already have more skill than a bunch of people I know that have used this method for clean looking results

The best part about loving that Mary Poppins scene, is that it goes well with the layered style of painting you've mentioned yoo. Because thats how they did the backgrouds. Animation cells. You could even design it on the computer and have a custom wall sticker made. As for the closet shelves, we have a full quilting stash closet and used the shelves from Home Depot/Lowes. There is a single track piece at the top, and multiple upright poles on the wall and shelves are held on by brackets. They adjust at about 1" differences. Easy to install with wall anchors, and closer to built-ins than to cubes. Shelves are available in several depths. The brand from HD is called Closetmaid if you want to research it.

You have a style. It’s called Eclectic. There’s a whole vibe & it’s cool. Choose items you love, not stylized ideas of what “should” go together. You live there, you should love the things that surround you. Besides, once everything is in the space, you’ll actually discover that they do go together & if they don’t, put them in another room that it fits into more. Also, for the guest bedroom. You should look for 2 nice, deep nightstands & use those as the dresser with a recycled door or sheet of wood as the top. Paint or design them anyway you like. It’s a compromise to your dresser vs desk dilemma.

For your studio I’d suggest the fun paint and then white accessories. I did yellow in mine. I also have a felt wall to use for quilt layouts and then a peg board wall that I also painted differently. I love your centering a room around one theme. My craft room is my silliness everywhere. I love it. It works for me. So do what works for you. I love the Mary Poppins chalk holiday theme.

When we have moved into a new house, I begin a three ring binder with a pocket divider for each room. On each folder I do a line drawing of the room, with wall, window, and door measurements. As I found ideas for each room, they went into the pocket. Then when I bought paint, I asked for them to print an extra sticker for the color and I put that on the page. When I went to buy drapes or whatever, the notebook goes with me. I also include any owner manuals for appliances. When we sell the house, the notebook goes to the new owner.

First of all - you are doing Just Fine - no hurry! A few ideas from 30 years of trying stuff. If it still functions, leave it till you have an inspiration. It's perfectly okay to have your decorating "style" change over the years - once we had peach and grey, now we have green and sand. Using one key item as a theme for each room is quite wise. Try a mural idea in sidewalk chalk. I did that with our tree-in-the-corner and found the trunk needed to be half as wide as I thought. Also, do one mural wall at a time and live with it before adding another and another wall. You won't want to cover up murals with shelves or storage. Do walls first, then go back and add a "sky" to your ceiling. Your blues will need to be waaay lighter than you think. Try Ikea or thrift store swag lights hung on hooks for temporary ceiling lights. Desk-inside-a-closet is a trick we've used forever - you can close the door and not bother straightening up! I love the "everything looks better with a stack of books" worldview, because we have wall-to-wall books in two rooms (dining and living rooms). We have grouted kitchen counters - large slabs of terrazzo and a few grout lines. #1 - lemon juice solves many stains. #2 - get a silicone sealer on it, while you decide what to replace the tile with. #3 - don't get a cheap counter "for now" - just wait and get a good one. Be aware - cool kitchen cabinet pulls can cost an idiotic amount of money. Your vintage laundry cabinets are now worth a lot - solid slab doors are ridiculous. If you dislike them, sell them. We've got entryway wainscoting and turned the top rail into a peg rack - there's a peg every few inches in the top piece of wainscoting. The dining room is in style now, as plywood is often seen as a wall covering.

A suggestion for your studio. Source a second hand kitchen island bench to use as a cutting /working surface. They tend to be great heights for this purpose, much better than a table or being a floor troll. Mine was a game changer. One on wheels would be even better. Don't stress about decorating. All you need is somewhere to sit comfortably, something you enjoy looking at from that seat, a lamp, and a place for a book and a cup. Everything else will come over time adding layers and memories. Relax and you will find your style

For ALL the kitchen tile: 1. use a grout cleaner (make your own or buy it) 2. IMPORTANT STEP - apply grout sealer! For the missing grout: 1. clean out any loose grout (there are tools for this, but you may not need them) 2: buy grout in a matching color (a box -less than $20? - that you mix what you need with water) or pre-mixed (plastic tub - less than $10?). I'm pretty sure you'll need to get unsanded grout in either type. After the proper amount of time to set, make sure you seal that new grout, too. Sealing the grout should help keep it from staining when you spill coffee again. ;-)

Here's what I would like to do to the master bedroom in my dream home (which I'm currently designing using my old high-school drafting knowledge which is more full of holes than a wheel of Swiss cheese lol): DEEP-PILE shag carpet in a darker blue (and by deep-pile I mean something in the range of 2-3 inches deep, i.e. the kind of shag carpet that gets referenced with TVs that have no remote and that requires a 3-day supply of food and water when crossing the room), and then matched by velvet material attached to the wall, with gold-toned accents on corners and light fixtures, and medium- to dark-tan furniture, with pops of medium-emerald green on any chairs or couches in the room. I'd also want quilts and pillow-cases trimmed in emerald green with large patches of golden yellow for the bedding. Yeah, I know, I'm weird lol but the room would also be lit with a large chandelier overhead, wall sconces, and a very large set of French doors, since I absolutely DESPISE pot lights and track lighting. I'm still just not sure if I should go with stone, wood, more deep-pile shag vis a vis the early 1970s, or more velvet for the jet-tub surround, since a jet-tub is a must for relaxing sore muscles after a long day (and having it in the master bedroom should supposedly keep the kidlets out of it lol), and every decent-sized master bedroom should have one. As for your hallway, I say call Rachel Maksy and turn her loose on the wall with a set of paints lol can't say what you'd end up with, but it'd be full of whimsy and something resembling plants and trees lol

My grandma's house had tile in the kitchen and I really liked it. She got it because the tile was free and the counters needed redone anyway at the time. They also were much bigger tiles and we put them in with a better grout than that (grout for counters shouldn't stain like that). No worries about moving stuff from the stove straight to the counter like some materials, doubled as a cutting board for some things (we used a cutting board for meat), and was really stain resistant. We're having to redo our current house now and I was so excited when I found that they make tile counters now that are all one solid surface and they're cheaper than granite or marble.

It looks like that carousel house was made into a rocking horse as a display solution after it was bought. Of course now I will be searching for carousel horses that won't fit in my apartment. Oh wait, it could be a feature.

Also im jelly of that living room now that its got hardwood floors, but literally just for dancing reasons. If you have no ideas on what to do to fill that space, go and get into some sort of social partner dancing in your area, pick up a great new hobby, and then boom! now you have a reason why you keep that room so clear, so you can dance in the living room, or even do little social dance house parties where you barely have to clear any furniture to have enough room for some dancing friends

I know I'm late to this party, BUUUUT... I 100% relate to "I like everything". So here's something that helps me: I gather like 20 pictures that I truly love. Not just like, but *love* Then, slowly look over all 20 photos and look for the things that are similar between them. Even though the whole picture looks different, but there will be small aspects you'll find that are the same, or similar. Then list out those very specific similarities. Then you'll have a list of your *must haves* Hope that helps ❤

My favorite thing in my house is a giant panel for $30 from homedepot that I can use dry erase markers on. It's the size of my whole wall. I have bookshelves underneath and a whole wall of dry erase board. My kids love it. Great for games bit I personally use it sooooooo often to sketch out quick designs and do calculations and make quick lists or work out problems I have a whole wall to draw on. I could see you enjoying something like that. My daughters use to decorate the board for me and sometimes we leave notes to each other. Their favorite is that I write riddles on the board and they spend a week or 2 trying to solve the riddles and I give whomever figures it out any treat they want. I've only had to buy 2 treats the whole time I've put riddles up. My husband enjoys the riddles too. We also follow drawing tutorials at same time we all draw the same thing and it's funny how different all our drawings will look.

We chose 12in tile for the kitchen counters in our small apartment over our garage. I’m not saying they are good reasons, but here were ours … (1) it’s SMALL. There are literally 7sq feet of counter space & a narrow ledge next to it. The cost of even a laminate countertop would have been 10x the price because it would be 3 different pieces & a literal third of it would be cut out for the sink. (2) 12inch tiles make it less hassle than smaller tiles. (3) I was tired of decisions by the time we decided to replace the countertops too & we just used the same stuff from the floor. (4) making the counters & floors match make the small space feel like the kitchen is a cohesive space separate from the living space even though it’s totally open. (5) we mostly rent the space for short term stays and let family stay there, so it’s not a heavily used space. Eventually I hope my mom will move in there, but even then it won’t see a lot of use. I assume new countertops aren’t a short term goal, so here are my recommendations for making it work better until you get to it … - re-grout … regrouting is usually fairly quick & you can bring it up to the level of the tile so stuff doesn’t get lost in it. Just make sure you’re using a “resin based” grout that’s made for countertops. - use a grout sealer … helps tremendously with staining & helps the grout stay better - avoid leaving very wet things out for long periods of time. A countertop grout will help it last longer, but try not to leave puddles & it will work better.

That doorknob IS pretty spectacular. (Also I'd consider replacing the tile counters with granite or similar, but that's just me. I'd be concerned about bacteria in the grout.) 😉

Tile can be really practical as a kitchen countertop. If you are prone to dropping things or have children who are trying to help, sections can get broken. With a solid surface counter, it can be REALLY expensive to replace if broken. With tile, you remove the broken one and replace it. As for the grout, once you get it clean (Dawn power wash and a toothbrush) fill in the low spots with more grout. After it is all dry, use car wax to polish the counter (grout and tile). This makes it very easy to keep clean afterwards. Just regular wiping up of spills and reapply the wax every month or two. That also works well for tile shower stalls. Lots less time to clean off soap scum!

Use trim to make blocks and do clouds inside the blocked out center. Do similar on walls with trim can do bottom of walls with panels and do fun wallpaper and some interesting crown molding to pull it all up to ur blocked out center clouds. Layered curtains. I love this idea of mismatched curtains like dark green a floral then a pink then some really soft like sheer soft pink. Under a set of sheer white. Pull colors from the floral curtain or from the horse. Can do 1 feature wall with all the trim. Then all other walls just paint bottom and one trim thru center of wall. I just paint bottom if my sons walls this beautiful dreamy ice blue on just the bottom of the walls and tops all white and it just pops with red, browns and dark blues. Suttle but impactful as a lovely frame for any style or artwork

I installed large format tiles on the kitchen counters. 2 foot by 1.5 foot. your grout may need re-sealing. also, there are a pile of bleach gel pens for grout. ooooooor, you could regrout with grout that is tinted to match your tile color. and bring the level up so you don't need a hand vac to de-crumb your grout lines.

The one thing to think about on any kind of style is the maintenance- What is required to keep that color/fabric/decor looking the best it can be, is it a lot of fiddly work I hate doing or is it just a basic wipe down? Are you up for dusting that lamp every day. It is a combination of knowing yourself well enough to know that yes I am going to spill and stain that white couch and I won't care enough to bleach right after. When picking out a style I go maintenance then by what I don't like - It helps to narrow down what I will pick from.

Re: decorating -- it's not what you like, it's what you need and what you *dislike*. I love long, light curtains that go to the floor, but I hate vacuuming the dust off them and and I need window coverings that keep the street lights out because my bedroom faces a busy road. So I'm happy with the blinds I have.

So, the horse is most likely from S&S Wood carvers in Santa Ana, CA and made in the early 1980's based on an early 1900's style carousel horse. I think it should of been called Serendipity, since it perfectly describes you finding it, but I realize I am late to the video and it already has a name.

Having lived in places with grouted tile kitchens for nearly all of my life, and some of it pretty grotty when I lived in LA, I can recommend doing two things (if you're going to keep it awhile): clean it VERY well (soak with bleach, scrub, soak again, scrub), then regrout any voids, and then reseal the grout. All inexpensive, easy stuff for a regular non-construction human to do and it solves that problem for a longer term big change later. Good luck!

I had the same major issue trying to decide the design of my kitchen renovation, even frustration down to what colors to paint the walls, let alone the flooring choices or the backsplash choices, or the counter top choices. And so I went looking for a nice piece of artwork that might give me some direction, and I stumbled upon the glass painting/stained glass corner of Etsy. And I found more inspiration than I know what to do with and very reasonable prices. I have always wanted to own stained glass, and now I will have that look in my home and it will make me happy to see it every day.
