Love the series of videos. One thing you forgot to mention is if you trailer the boat you have to demast it after every outing, and restep the mast every time you go out. For that reason alone many keep the trailerables wet. I also think that when buying a small boat in the water many will not have them gone over by a professional so you need to have someone show you how to look for blisters or soft spots. I never trust that sails are new, I always assume all sails and running rigging needs to be replaced. And as you have said alot, small boats are not fast but sailing is the ultimate way to boat. It does not get any better than a fast broad reach in good winds. Great channel, keep up the posts

Other costs include mechanical parts, cleaning supplies, dinghy, outboard and lines. At least, sails are in great condition. 🥴

Great overview, many of those items can be reduced in cost with the right shopping around, I work in industrial equipment sales and have access to discount on stainless hardware companies that sell specific marine fittings, cleats, pulleys etc.. and you would be amazed at the crazy margins these companies charge for basic stuff, pays to shop around and ask for discount.

Bought a Precision 18 for $350 - it was advertised for $2500. A foot of water inside, tons of mold, trailer needed lights and tires. I was going to walk away until the owner asked what I would realistically pay and I told her I would think twice about talking it if she gave it to me. (True!) The upsides: it came with two sets of sails and cushions that were stored inside, a 2011 Yamaha four stroke motor, many extra's. Took me two days to get the trailer back to road worthiness for a 2 hour drive back home. Spent over $2200 and untold hours getting her to perfect condition (two years later, teak extra's and buffing she's purdy slick sight)

In Dec.2023 I bought a 30` Hunter from a sailor in New Port Richey Fl. for 2k with 3 good sails, rigging and solar power with a running 2QM20 yanmar that needed a raw water pump rebuilt . He needed the boat out of the slip for a new boat so bargaining was easy. Me my Brother and sister in-law motored and sailed the boat from NPR to Port Saint Lucie Fl. across the Okeechobee Waterway 6 days with no issues. Couldn`t be happier.

I got my C-22 about a month ago for $2,800 on ebay. I keep mine in the Great Salt Lake, and my slip fees are significantly less than yours, mine are $126 per month in the summer which includes water. Fortunately mine is in really good shape, only things I have added are wax about $25, registration $380, and a solar power controller for $17. But... I think new sheets and halyards may be in the future...

Great video. Very informative. I recently purchased a 76 Catalina 27’ completely restored and upgraded with new everything for $5K. Heavy duty chain plates, new sails, new battery with solar charger, new Ritchie compass, new composting toilet, new upgraded rigging, new VHF radio, new bottom paint plus a boatload of maintenance and cleaning supplies, Johnson 8HP outboard, brand new rail mount gas grill, and a bunch more. It included the slip fee for another month and haul out, pressure wash and winter storage which would have been $1K so I basically got it for $4K. I love it! Now I just gotta learn how to sail. It’s currently in Connecticut, but I’d like to snowbird it to Florida next fall.

I bought my C22 for $500, but it was in way worse condition. I'm one of those idiots that likes a challenge. It's easier to list what is original on the boat since that since that is a much shorter list, everything else is new. Add to that a blister repair job, full restoration of the keel, painting the entire boat, etc. New sails, new outboard, new rigging, new hardware, etc... I spent about $7K on parts and supplies, that doesn't include my labor.

@SteelDoesMyWill
@SteelDoesMyWill 3 жыл бұрын
@@tahoetimm9662 I only had one rotten spot around the electrical thru deck fitting for the mast wiring, it was about 4 x 4 inches. Repairing deck rot is always easier from the top on a Catalina (any model). The catch 22 is that you're going to tear up the non-skid pattern on the gelcoat which really can't be duplicated in a repair. If you fix extensive deck rot just plan on re-doing all the nonskid with Kiwi Grip, you only need one gallon to do the entire boat and its a really great deck surface. It also has the added bonus of hiding imperfection if your new fiberglass top surface isn't automotive grade bodywork level.

Had a 1990 Catalina Capri 26, which was a solid, dependable, manageable boat, that was in great shape at 15 years old. Over the course of 8 years, we upgraded electronics and electrical, rigging & lines, and sails. When we had to sell her, we did well -- getting back 70% of what we paid for her originally, not counting the upgrades. When we looked at what we shelled out for those 8 great seasons on the water, it wasn't bad at all. When we were looking for a boat, there was a lot of push from brokers to get something bigger "so we wouldn't grow out of it quickly," but we knew what we wanted as a couple. Finding an solid older Catalina, especially the 22, 25 or 27 should be doable for most prospective sailors if they take their time and learn what needs elbow grease vs. what needs $$.

Hello AIP - I bought my 1970 C-22 (hull #284) for $356.00 on E-bay through a charity auction - a real risk for sure. However, it turned out to be an awesome deal. Keel is in really good shape, rudder is good shape, keel winch and cable are in usable shape (new cable and new winch provided in sale), Rigging is in excellent shape (I bent one turnbuckle end learning how to raise the mast but there were two extra TB in the box of stuff), Sails are in OK shape (main needs replaced), hull is solid below the split line (no leaks or soft spots), leaked through the deck in spots (all fixed now). There are other problems above the split line but nothing that won't allow me to sail this year and fix her in the winter. Two areas of wood in the deck that are going bad need to be cut out and replaced. Bought a new mast step/Bolt $30, Fiberglass epoxy/cloth $20, Outboard 15hp Johnson $400, Polyurethane $16, Topping lift $20, Trailer winch and Strap $70, CG safety flares $30, new trailer tires $320, screws/nuts/bolts/hasp - $100. So I guess I have about $1400 in it right now. Deck repairs will be about another $100 in epoxy, glass, wood, sand paper and then paint... No electronics yet??

We’re about the same my Catalina 22 cost me $5500 but has 4 sets of sails, three of which are good, the one that isn’t will be a backyard sun shade. Outside of the purchase price I probably have a $1,000 into it. You are right the bigger the boat the more the costs add up. I’m lucky to be in Texas where slip fees are affordable. Not focusing on the cost, I will say that I love the way the Catalina sails. When the wind is right it always puts a smile on my face. It is comfortable enough without the big headaches of a larger boat. I prefer it to sailing a sunfish, which is fun to sail but really beats up your body. If I were to do it again I would have bought the 17’ trailerable $1,200 wooden snipe I passed on, restored it sailed it on my local lake and probably be out $3,000 total. So far this has been a great learning boat but I have had my troubles with it as well. The magic of a small boat is to not have to deal with systems, that is where the costs and the headaches start. My goal for this Catalina is to learn to sail it well, then find the kitchen slide out and use it as a dedicated camper.
@AdventuresInParadise
@AdventuresInParadise 4 жыл бұрын
We have the same goal except I wonder if the kitchen slide out is not needed. A gas stove is fine and then you save the much needed space inside. Plus, with small gas burner, you can cook in the cockpit too, or on a little island you're parked next to.
@gigioecu

Adventures In Paradise I saw a slideout at my club, it needs restoration, but it has the drawers and water tank that make it a good option. But you are right a small gas stove is fine, I use it to sail on a local lake and don’t trailer it.

Had the "official " slide out gally. Did not like the sink drain discharge location that would gain water when heeled - never did leak. But took that out and added a catch tank for the grey water. Used it one time to make the kids hot chocolate. Best thing about is it did help with the resale price of 5k. (New sails, outboard, copper bottom job, new keel pin/bearings & the list goes on.)

I just got my 1982 Catalina 22, sail number 11353, about 3 weeks ago... I actually traded a $800 guitar and a $200 amplifier for it that I was no longer using ( I have many many more) . Complete with 2 older main sails in fair condition, one rather nice jib, and no motor. I'm sure it will need all new running rigging, and possibly new standing rigging also. I will make brand new seat cushions with new foam with my industrial sewing machines. I don't have to do everything at once, one step at a time while enjoying sailing ... I will certainly do the most important items first, keel cable and pin, etc. including some trailer work too. I do expect to have at least $4,500 all in all. 😎⛵

I owned 9757 and brought her back. It was in much better starting condition that yours was, and admittedly I also went through Catalina direct for a lot of my repairs. Looking back I realize that I paid CD a hefty commission for what they supply you with. Gerhauer is the cheapest option for replacement running rigging but is quality. For the same price you can find higher quality brands like lewmar and harken. Better halyards can be bought for much less. For me it was a joy to refit my boat and that’s how it should be looked at, like you said a hobby.

1980 universal marine montego. 1,400 to buy with a small trailer. Trailer needed more than the boat. Found a used loadrite, new bearings and rollers that I got at a garage sale for 20 bucks. The hard blue ones not the sun cracked yellow. New lines and a traveler block about 450, 3 hp yamaha long shaft almost new 300. Did the bottom myself, new bottom and ablative coats 300. New bronze through hull for sink drain. About 3250 with boat trailer and all paperwork. Sails nice, but if there is alot of boat wakes or chop it needs a 6hp or higher. If she was on a lake or big pond the 3hp would be plenty

Keep in mind that on a larger, heavier boat it's not bad going to the mast to raise the main... on the 22 it was too little space to walk and rocked too badly but it's pretty nice on the larger boat. Your new boat will likely already have the jib on a furler

Sounds about right. Ive got and had a few trailer sailers and if looking at a boat now I divide the price between sails and rigging, hull and interior, engine, and Trailer. Any one of these could be a complete deal breaker if the cost of replacement repair is nearly as much as the boat is worth. I have had more trouble with trailers than the rest combined, but that's because I don't have a workshop and serious tools for fixing these things.
@AdventuresInParadise
@AdventuresInParadise 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. On our four year old power boat, the trailer had issues from the sale water... it doesn't matter than I rinse it with salt away when we're done boating, it sits there in the parking lot all day after being submerged ... I just spent like $800 fixing it up with a new axle, brakes, all new nuts and bolts/rims...all this boating stuff can get expensive. It's annually that I have to replace the jack/wheel and the winch strap.

I was like you I looked at a boat but decided not to invest in it until he had to move his 1978 Spirit 23 out of a storage lot and on the weekend before it had to be moved he texted me that if I would haul it off then he would sell me the boat and trailer and boat for $360. I couldn't pass it by so now its my boat. I have re-registered both the trailer and boat, that was $110. In California the trailer are permeant tags so no more fees for it. Boat is $22 per year. I store it at home for free and have started getting it ready to sail. Main item was replacement of the swing keel cable which had rusted shut and broke into. I'm at $1,675 in but I'm ready to take it out and see how she sails. I got two main sails and one Jib with the boat plus he had purchased a new control panel, new teak hand holds and a lot of new LED lights for the interior so I will only need to install those. The windows are tight and do not leak but all the interior needs to be replaced. I have the old foam for patterns if I decide to replace. If I like how it sails then I'll tackle that but not putting anymore money into it until I decide if I want to keep it or sell it.

My first boat was a piece of junk, cost me 300 quid. I put a battery in there, I rewired everything, I bought new position lights and anchor lights, I needed new interior lights, I needed to redo the cushions, I dropped 1 turnbuckle into the water which lead to me replacing the entire shroud, the boat was UV damaged so I needed an entire new coat of paint, sail cover, sail ties, halyard wrap preventer for the jib, new faucet, tubes, needed to reinforce the transom bracket for the outboard, used outboard, interior paint as well, some wood fixing. All in all probably 2500 plus the boat cost. Major loss for me but it was my first and I had to start somewhere. There was a bit more to do so I sold it on and got my second boat, my current boat. This one is sailable atleast. I got it for 1300 on an auction. It has a working inboard although it needs servicing. I invested 130 quid in that already, I need new halyards (longer, to lead them back to the cockpit) which also requires halyard blocks, lead blocks, cleats, halyard bag, Im gonna install a lazy jack system so altogether another 600 quid. Biggest investment will be the new headlining, Im not sure if I will do that myself. Especially my front cabin is very difficult, and I have never done anything like this before. And I do not have the old headlining for there. The salon needs new headlining aswell, but I do have the old headlining and can just copy it. Although I might not even use headlining, I might use cladding. Getting someone to do it would cost me like 1500 quid plus materials. Lets say 1750. And thats it so far. But its a boat, Im sure I will find more things to do. Plus all the small things that are tiny 10 quid jobs etc. Lets say another 200 for those all in all. 1300+130+600+1750+200=3980. I also need to install Wind generators and Solar panels. 120 for the charge controller, 2 solar panels at 100 quid each, wind generator 150 and charge controller for that 30. So all in all approximately 4480 quid.
@obiwanfisher537

Its all little stuff that add up over time. But when I got the boat she was sailable. Most of these things are just personal preference and looks. The engine generally works, the sails are good as well, electricity is given as well, the inboard has an alternator.

But I was standing there with the cash. There are a lot of drunks, drug people and people that just can't talk without living all trying for easy money. It is not easy! The third time I bought a spare rudder pin for $6, and a couple of spare aka pins for $2.00. There is really nothing else on it that will break. @@AdventuresInParadise I looked at the Catelina 22 also. The main reasons I didn't get one is because I have no place to keep it. I live in a subdivision, so I would either have to keep it in a marina, or I would have to keep it in a storage lot, and both of those cost money. Plus if I trailer it, it takes time to set it up, which I think it will get old pretty quick. If I keep it on a marina, I think I would get tired of sailing the same lake all the time. The Hobie fits in my garage. I just got a trailer, so it is setup and ready to go when I get to the lake, and I take it to different lakes. There is virtually no maintenance on it. Im only a day sailor, so I don't really need the room of a big sailboat. Also with the Hobie, I can pedal it if there is no wind or when tacking. I still might get a Catalina one of these days, just because you stay dry and can sail it in cooler weather. The Hobie is a wet ride. So basically, you need both of them.
