I wanted to find a small-scale forwarding trailer so I could harvest the timber on my land, and the best option was to look overseas. While the machine is fine and in good working order, getting it on a ship and across the ocean was less than awesome. Here is the story.

I have a great pulp trailer and I paid for it. 30k. I see where you're coming from when it comes to price, but I got what I paid for - better stabilizer arms, higher clearance, great tires and incredible strength. Mine requires a 35 to 50 hp tractor- it would crush an atv. It bottoms out a Tacoma. There are smaller models for smaller tractors or atvs for less money. Best of all, it is north American made. I follow the n.b. fellow. I'm in Atlantic Canada too. The woody's log trailers that i have may cost more but your supporting local jobs. Maybe there was something lost in translation about the size of trailer you wanted. My opinion is that most people should trade in the thought of paying less for equipment, save the shipping costs, assembly time and lower quality steel for north American quality. I'm assuming all of us are doing some forestry to make cool things to sell to those near by. Seems inconsistent to want locals to buy from us when we buy equipment from far away - when we can buy it here.

I enjoyed the video and the information in it including the import information. Looking at all the flexing when you load the unit makes me think you will soon own a Chinese mig welder and use it to install braces all over the machine. Good luck!

Most of the movement you are seeing is coming from the tongue, which is on a pivot and has some play to it, but its a solid steel rod. If anything, I worry the frame itself might be a tad too rigid, which can also be a bad thing. Time will tell, but so far my biggest complaints come from the design and not the structure. I do have a welder just in case ;). That one is American though.

Shorter turning radius would also mean a lower load limit as the weight shift would lift the atv/utv. a larger fluid reservoir and faster valves are very helpful.

Hey, i hope this machine will last, although it is known that it is cheap because it is built from cheap components. I live in Estonia and I bought a machine made in Estonia last year from the company Forstman and I am very satisfied with it, of course it was also much more expensive than the machine made in China. But all the best to you and may this machine last ;)

@thetimberlandinvestor

Yes, you can, but it's mostly to balance the load out to keep most of the weight right over the axle with enough on the tongue to keep traction and stability.

Do you think it would be a good fit for a 31hp 4x4 tractor and what was the cost of the unit? I’m considering buying one in addition to my three point iton&oak grapple on my small plot of land to thin and manage the small trees to let the bigger ones grow.

Great video! Putting the controls on the ATV will make it more difficult to unhitch the trailer to use the ATV to run into town to get repair parts. I think you would have done better with a Logrite fetching arch along with their Junior arch to raise the entire log off the ground. It would require more trips, but it's a less complicated operation.
@thetimberlandinvestor
@thetimberlandinvestor 5 ай бұрын
That's exactly why I ultimately decided against it. As it is, I can haul it around with my car, so its pretty handy. You aren't wrong, and I think for the vast majority of people interested in this sort of thing the log arch is the best option, but a big motivation for me was the ability to experiment with "large scale small scale" operations, so the log arch felt too limited. It is an intellectual pursuit as much as anything.

I can see that thing snapping in half from the sideloading on the plates that connect the front and rear frames together.
@thetimberlandinvestor
@thetimberlandinvestor 11 ай бұрын
Im not too concerned about it. Theres a smaller ~.3 inch square tube inside of there in addition to those inch thick steel plates. Youd be doing wheelies with the tractor long before that broke. The first part to break will likely be right by the hitch, and coincidentally or not, they made that the easiest thing to repair/replace.

Beware when turning as your tractor rear wheel can catch the hydrualic hoses and rip them off. The hoses on the engine pump look quite vulnerable.

Bravo We operate in both Canada and USA. While C anada also starts with a C, there's a world of distance compared to C hina! We share the same phone system, continent. LANGUAGE, culture, and understand each other in all aspects of business! . Generally Canadiains love doing business with Americans, and are happy to talk. Yes Canadians cannot afford to work for 3 bowls of rice per day, but the familiarity, friendliness, and fellowship is worth the increase in price... and OFTEN- IT'S cheaper, for better quality than our famous own "Made in America". So when I see that maple leaf flag on a product. I buy IT with pride also.

@@thetimberlandinvestor still a trailer attached to a proper tractor is safer and the grapple and Divider or whatever it's called in English works faster and is there really a point in having such a small trailer
@thetimberlandinvestor
@thetimberlandinvestor 3 ай бұрын
@@KraLemi1 Speed definitely isn't always good. I actually have the governor set to restrict the speed quite a bit for both safety and protection of residual trees. That said, I may attach it all to the tractor hydraulics in the future so I dont have to leave the tractor to operate it. The purpose of this is experimental. I wan to know what the minimum viable size is for a forest operation. In some of my latest videos, particularly the one about forest trails, I explain why.

The comments say it all, there's nifty homeowner stuff, then there's this.. Donno what to say, institutionalized homeowner mentality I guess, no longer aware you're severely affected. You're getting the worst of both worlds, if anyone here in Scandinavia saw you loaf around with this setup and the way that thing was flexing, you'd have half of them about done wheezing for air (one guy I knew would have outright expired), while the other half is rushing to immobilize you and pull you away as they'd think you weren't capable of critical thinking. You clearly figured you needed a logging trailer that badly, and in so doing you're aiming for enough production that a good used setup wouldn't have set you back nearly as much as you think. Another thing too is I wouldn't support someone yowling about supporting 'muricans (not saying anyone are), if it turned out they were using Chinese forestry equipment. People notice when you get the N.A built stuff.

i don't think china's lack of customer service has to do with it being a "soviet style economy". poor customer service has to do with keeping costs low, aka the incentives of capitalism
@thetimberlandinvestor
@thetimberlandinvestor 4 ай бұрын
Its deeper than it being only about customer service. From what I know, its a very producer focused economy, and producers also cooperate with each other in ways not seen in the west. For example, you have entire towns dedicated to producing only one small component, like maybe zippers or carburetors, so it ends up being like a producer based syndicalism. But I would like to go there and learn more, particularly to the Shenzhen area. Interestingly, you also see the producer-focus on Mexico, but most of the Mexican economy is informal and made up of small farmers, factories, and family businesses, so the producer focus is pretty beneficial in that instance because everyone is also a producer... But there is still no customer service, so it is a tradeoff.
@sammcalilly107
@sammcalilly107 4 ай бұрын
@@thetimberlandinvestor interesting! it makes sense they would be producer focused since all the factories need each other. i guess my criticism was that china's economy resembles the US system more than it resembles the soviet system, in my opinion. china is basically state sanctioned capitalism. sorry for bringing this to your channel, though you do talk a lot about markets and the forest economy. regardless, i've enjoyed learning from your videos. i bought some woodland in 2021 and there's not a ton of good information out there, you really have to dig for it and cobble together pieces of knowledge if you want to be an informed landowner. but your channel synthesizes a lot of info that's buried / inaccessible, and explains it in a good way. thanks!
