I dont think its inconsistent. the console is even rewired to be modern electronics. The rats nest of wiring from the 70's has been removed yes. But its more a statement about the console which is the main interface device, and keeping that original, warts and all. this is the part that people touched and used. it holds the story thats why it would be horrid to revamp it. This project is not about keeping it original but building on the machine but keeping true to its story. Also the comments about the blower running out of air in the store cupboard are vastly over estimating its ability to try and make a vacuum chamber! Besides the cupboard is relatively large and has a false ceiling. Getting air is the least of its worries.

I think it would be cool if the "organist that knows what they're doing" is Anna Lapwood. Me and probably a bunch of others here know her from the KZfaq algorithm recommending her repeatedly after you bought Joan's organ. Anna appears to play regularly in Royal Albert Hall and it would be smashing to hear her comparison on massive organ in a concert hall, vs smaller organ in a way too small room. Also it could be a fun mix with your modern bleep blop music vs Anna's more classical/movie soundtrack style.

Even out of tune the organ sounds absolutely beautiful.

Functionality, but with originality, is the way to go. I’m a church organist, and part of the enjoyment from visiting other instruments is experiencing first hand the history - often written in pencil on the inside of the pipe chest. Thanks for saving this amazing piece of audio engineering.

Would look good with a stained glass effect panel in a LMNC theme in that bit over the keyboard. Would still be see through and in keeping with church organs roots.

It was to be demolished with the church and Joan saved it, then you saved it. It'll never be perfect but it's alive. It doesn't matter how clean it is or isn't

When people are trying to explain electronics they often use water or air as an analogy to make the concepts more relatable. You do the opposite. Love it. The more ways we have to understand the world the better we understand it.

I prefer stuff that looks its age. The perfectionists that return stuff to factory condition effectively destroy its history.

In the end you might find you can sort the reservoir out so it can be moved closer to the pipes without getting too much noise (if you have a problem with air supply to the pipes). The organs I've seen all have the blower in a separate room because of the noise, but the reservoirs are usually in the pipe chambers with a really short run to the wind chests.

There is something about "upgrading" an old instrument with the new electronics without making it look like a plastic mould of an old instrument that is very nostalgic. Most old things get thrown away or they are inefficient to use with modern needs, but you managed to bring the organ back to 2023. Loved the outro about the organ playing! Also the LEDs are perfect, this is in fact KZfaq and if anyone are offended, they should listen to the radio!

You're still extremely diligent on this project, so happy to see how far you've come.

I put a pipe organ in my church in 1978 and later moved it to the new building in 1984. The ivories look yellow but that's the way they were. A few years later we got a new music director and she said to leave the roll top cover open and the ivories will bleach out due to ambient IR. I said to myself, yeah right. But, a few years later the ivories we much whiter, actually almost perfect. Wow! Thanks Linda for the tip.

I spend too much time on KZfaq but this is one of the few things that I stop everything I'm doing and watch whenever there's an update. I don't know how popular this project is in comparison to your others, but for me, it's been so amazing to watch!

If you see this Sam, an idea for the pipes I had goes like this: PVC, but instead of PVC cement on the joints/couplers (permanent bonding), you use a bit of silicone caulk OUTSIDE the connection. Air tight (don't try with water) and removable. If you need to cut the PVC to length, it can always be coupled back together for full length. You can use the PVC as a manifold to connect to the flexible hoses you already have. Just some theory crafting. I agree with your statements/thought-process on keeping the soul of the instrument in the looks department but making it more functional with the electronics. Wish you luck and thanks for the content!

I agree 100%. Leave the rough edges, the life, and age the way it is. It's awesome. For me, it's the contrast between the new and old tech. With the mix of synths and a classic old church organ keeping the old dirt and patina is perfect. Got freaked out when you dragged the keyboard console. A few times there looked like it was going to topple over. Very relieved.

100% agree, the important part about this organ is that it was in someone's private home, with that comes the patina.

And that is exactly why so many organs have their own HVAC systems - helps keep them in some semblance of tune! If you look at Rob Scallon's video where he tours a pipe organ, each room of ranks has a heater in it.

I felt a lot emotional too! When I saw your posts without all the ranks and everything I almost fainted HAHAHAH. The story behind this " beast " is incredible... from Joan who wanted to keep them instead of it beeing thrown away to you who restored it not in it's original state but enough to make and hear it sounding! I fell in love with the organ since when I saw your first video. From then I studied the instrument and watched so many videos on it that I can't even remember! We don't even know how much effort you're putting on this project

Wow... Joan's organ is coming along nicely... I agree with you, I like to keep things as they are instead of completely changing it to being brand new! Yeah, you'll need to tune it every 6 months depending on how often the temperature and humidity fluctuated in the room. Little tip to save time when it comes to tuning, if you tune a 4' diapason pipe (So, a 4' principal for example) to concert pitch, you can then tune the rest of the organ off that rank of pipes so, in theory it all is in relative tune with itself. This can be done by listening to the audible beats of the sound waves that are produced when an out of tune pipe is played at the same note as the tuned 4' diapason pipe. Just remember that the pipes might be at different octaves too - 8' is the equivalent of middle C, 4' is an octave above and 2' is an octave on top of the 4'. 16' is an octave below and then 32' would be an octave below that - If the Joan's organ had a 32' I would be surprised!! Reed pipes are a whole other kettle of fish... Very sensitive to temperature changes, just because of the nature of the pipe. Same with the wooden flue pipes - The Bourdon 16' on the right wall and then the Stopped Diapason 8' (The wooden flute ones) will change pitch at different temperatures because of the material. I'm currently retuning the wooden pipes on the organ I play on at the moment even though the whole organ was tuned about a month ago because the church has warmed up... Its a pain but, there you go! About voicing - You might want to ask a organ builder firm like Nicholson & Co. or Harrison & Harrison!

Have to respect the preservation of the flaws of the organ. It's one thing to take something and make it better but it's far harder to do that whilst still respecting it's original form. A great sentiment! I'm sure the original owner would have been very proud to have seen the end result.

What you came out of the house with to what it looks like and sound's great and looking much better with added led light's Trail and error on size is the Key to success.

Defenitely pro keeping the organs character and life. Some of these things we arent so much owners as custodians. Part of it's history will include the museum, and scrubbing away its past would rob the next caretaker of that story.

Very cool! I've always been a fan of church organs for their amazing sound, and also of technology, so combining them like this -- and saving a church organ from the dump in the process -- is a definite win in my book. 🙂

Don't take any crap from anybody, Sam. You're doing a wonderful thing. You saved it. And don't feel bad about using modern parts and materials. Parts of that organ have been modified before and anyone doing that would have used contemporary parts and materials. You're just adding to the story. If you hadn't done what you're doing, the story would be over and forgotten and that would be sad.

Seeing the bellows working in the organ room this summer was really cool, but I get that getting the noise out of the room and reclaiming the space makes sense... Need to put a window into the store room so visitors can watch the bellows. :)

Man if Joan's husband had midi and 3d printing back in that time i am pretty sure he would have used those instead of wood and thousands of meters of single cables and matrixes to make everything work. It is about making a church organ works with what everyone has at a singular time, in unusual situations (house/museum now). That spirit carries on with this new version. I am not sure he would have used leds, but for a demonstration purpose that's pretty handy.

Plumb it with smoothbore pvc pipe. The pressure drop in that flexible stuff is high due to the turbulence at the walls

Yeah I totally agree; clean off the mouse poop and whatever, but apart from that, leave it as-is. I bet it has a nice fusty, musty odour too and that’ll be part of it’s story to preserve. Brilliant!

It's perfect as ,it is.

Put a window in the backroom with the blower and make it its own display piece in a different part of the building. That would illustrate both how a real organ is set up in a church (Or house) and still showcase the technology for visitors. I know it probably isn't the most practical, but would be very cool to show off, and would be a better representation of how real organs are set up compared to how you've had it set up until now. I grew up around DC, and some of the Smithsonian museums have tidbits where you will come across new bits of information about earlier displays further into the exhibit, or hints about topics before you get to their specific display. I've also seen this done with zoo's ant exhibits, where the ants have two large areas they travel between that are in different parts of the exhibit. I think it really makes the space feel so real and alive. Probably won't see this comment, but if you do, I hope you find it interesting, and maybe gain some inspiration for the museum, either for this project or future ones.
