It’s happened again…oh eBay why… Introducing my DMS ‘Bullit’! Once a 1979 Ford Capri, this was converted into a rather unique Aston tribute… I have to say I’m impressed with the body panels, but the Ford underneath…well you will see!!

Keep the DMS body as is dont modify it because it looks sick as is, Just repair and paint or wrap it. However when you repair the sheet metal floors etc modify them to convert it to remove the leaf springs into independent suspension or maybe use Ford Sierra XR4x4 engine and running gear to make it into a 4 wheel drive great looking and great handling road going weekend track car. With the EFI and all round engine and suspension tune-ability you will have great fun, reliable and also be able to drive it home afterwards!

At this point, just build a chassis to go under the body kit. Engineer it the way you want. Make it something unique. I vote for the earlier suggestion of a Coyote V-8 in front of a 6 speed, but with some sort of boosting device feeding it. Build a monster.

These were built in a factory in Ringwood, not far from where I was living at the time. I had a kit car myself and drove up there to have a look. The director showed me the demonstrator car and a couple in build. They were certainly pretty impressive and I was quite tempted for a while.

IMHO go with a restomod as others have already said and have at it with your creativity and have some fun. That thing with a nice classic silver paint job and red leather interior, modestly lowered with the right wheels would look the absolute bomb. Give it a nice stainless steel exhaust system, decent suspension and brakes to make it handle well and this will be your "go to" summer car, you won't want to drive the real Aston's! Wish you the best of luck with it... I envy you getting your hands on this!!

I feel like the term you're looking for is "restomod." You're rebuilding/restoring the car to an operational state, but open to taking liberties modifying or updating systems and components for better performance and safety. With the Capri's history in racing, and now as a vintage racing series, there should be some fun options and upgrades available since most will be removed and replaced anyway. As you mentioned the car is in a grey area of not really being a Capri, it's not really an Aston, it's been modified already for the kit car look... I say you have carte blanche to do whatever you want! Could be a clean & fun weekend car, or something unique to run around a track.

Put it on a different chassis that isn't a Capri... Definitely don't try to restore this chassis, or ruin another Capri. Problem solved. EDIT: you don't owe DMS, Capri owners, or Aston Martin anything. Just make it a drivable car. Cut up a Fox-body Mustang chassis or something.

A Torque Wrench is a calibrated specialty tool. It’s accuracy is sensitive to temperature, not being set back to zero when done, and a host of other things that effect it’s calibration. But above all, it is NEVER to be used to LOOSEN anything. Ever. It is NOT a “breaker bar” or ratchet. It is to be used in the tightening position only. Otherwise you will ruin the accuracy of its calibration.

One thing I notice about the roof chop... When I first examined a Crayford Cortina convertible, the insides of the sills were doubled-up with about 3 inch wide and deep box sections welded top, sides, front and back to the original structure. The car would have folded up, otherwise. To avoid all this crap, just buy a Scimitar; you get an Essex, a decent chassis and a rust-free body.

It took about 6 weeks to build and wasnt really very good when he had made it. The handling wasnt great but it did get a lot of attention when he took it out. He drove it to Aylesbury college in November 1996 and this was when the car park was at the back. While parked there, someone in a Bedford van reversed into it and crushed the rear end. Is that a covin by any chance?
@JacknVictor
@JacknVictor 6 ай бұрын
@@HudsonAutoFilms it was a 911 replica but not a Covin, it was all done from scratch as far as I know. The guy I bought it from spent a couple of years putting all his love and attention in to it, then instead of enjoying it, he decided to sell after a few years, as, he got itching to go on to start his next project so had to sell that one. I think he got his enjoyment in the building stages more than owning it. Honestly though I got so much enjoyment from that car. Part of it was not worrying about damaging it like I did with my real Porsches. That used to stress me out. I'm not rich, I just happened to get offered cars at a time when I had the money to buy them (really wish I had used that money to pay more off the mortgage to be honest but I was young then!), but the stresses of owning the real ones zapped away any enjoyment I got from them, because I was scared of big repair bills, whereas the replica only cost me a few grand, and other than it having a couple of genuine Porsche parts on it, everything else came off a beetle or other mass produced car so were easily accessible. Plus I got a few things like extra fibre glass wings with it incase I damaged the ones on the car. Might just be that I'm easily pleased because my all time favourite cars I've owned were cheap old bangers such as a mk3 escort 1.1 pop that I loved because it was like driving a go kart but on the road, and a 1979 dog-shit metallic brown Toyota Corolla automatic. I like the less obvious cars more than flashy or the popular choice. Can't wait to see future videos on this car btw. I think if I was to buy another car nowadays, I would go for one of those new Ford 'escort' mk1 cars being made in Wales. They are escorts in every way but name, and have a few bits of more modern tech in them to bring them up to today's standards, but they are beautiful. I've always wanted a mk1but the best ones go for more than my house is worth where as these Welsh built cars are brand new and only sell for price of an average cheap to mid range family car so I would rather buy that, slap a ford badge on it and that will be me happy.

An interesting car, and I love the idea of a "baby Aston" as a daily driver. People who rebel against the idea of using a donor Capri - get over yerselves. It was never a great car. A Ford Cortina in a fur coat - with ancient engines live rear axles, and rust rust rust. I think donor Capri and drop the body on. NO point using expensive Aston parts. But how pretty was the original Aston body design?

I agree, having a baby Aston to daily is the goal. And to prove you can still fix classics on a budget without cutting dangerous corners! The original Aston is incredible

Leave it as a DMS, and get it in good shape to be used for summer. If you start putting Aston parts on it, it will become 'DIY' monster, looks great as is and as you put it not many were produced maybe one day people will enjoy them for what they really were.

fascinating stuff. you have an original DBS, thats serious kudos on its own. the restoration of an Aston Martin V8 cloned onto Capri running gear sounds bonkers but we wouldn't be Brits if we weren't a bit excentric. if you have the time and money, why not. and with some of the late Capri hardware it could be made to go and handle very respectably.

When I was a teenager I had at least 6 Capri’s. They they were practically giving them away. I got a couple of them without engines because guys like putting their V6 in Toyota trucks and the getting rid of the bodies. I would run 1/4 mile races beating a lot of V8’s I had such a great time with them back in the day!

You already have a great channel so why not inject a bit of fun, lunacy, and "make it up as you go" into it. Your instinct will keep you right, and as long as it fun, keep going. me in my loonacy would do a "frankecar" as you can whiden the wheel stance with a larger car suspeniton and subrframe and bolt that on it and such, as its farly common in sweden as one easy can see a car with completely diffrent brands bits bolted on it, as either its cheaper and looks similar or improve quality, as i think if you can find a rear axle of example a 760 it should be able to handle the power and be whide enough for the rear

Haven't seen under the front but the strut mountings and firewall etc look perfect. The rear chassis repair sections for hanging the springs are 80 quid and complete floors 170 quid. I imagine the sills are gone? I'd do maybe a bit of both, get the proper chassis parts and fabricate the floor. If you have metal shaping tools? All the better. I'd love to see this done and even though I love the MK1 and 1 1/2 Capri I think the MK2 and 3 are boring. This is better than a MK2 Capri to me. The first thing I looked at was the moulded bumper section and thought about sticking on some chrome! Almost any bumper would do - Apart from a Capri (which has a mild V shape)! I'd slightly modify the front and rear valances which look typical bulky kit car. The way the wheels sit under the arches is also a make or break, yet look pretty good on the standard car. Never seen one in the flesh though. Great project. There was a guy somewhere on KZfaq who did a video called something like, 'how to devalue your Capri' and showed this car on Ebay(?) while it was still up for auction. I think that is a major flippin score at that price. Brilliant, and when its the last one on planet Earth and built up by an Aston specialist (with video evidence) I think it will have some real value.

You know, this reminds me so much of the Reliant Scimitar GTC. Funnily enough, that too had a 3 ltr Essex I believe, but unlike that was totally a kit car with it's own chassis. I had the Scimitar SS1 which I'm told was Michelotti's final design before his death, and it was a 1980's parts bin car, but great fun (when it wasn't breaking down) Welcome to the fiberglass world of motoring, may your self tapping screws never let you down 👍
