My grandfather was part of the team who built the very first Austin Metro ever. He was no designer, but welded body parts together. Although he spent years on Mini bodies at Longbridge, he was very proud of the Metro. I had a Rover 100 1.4 L with a K series engine and loved it!

the Austin metro effectively saved the then British Leyland from disaster, very important car your Grandad worked on. Yes the 1.4 was a nippy little car, wish this one was a 1.4 but even so I will and have been enjoying it.

@@carukchannel Heck great find huh. I still remember seeing a brand new Metro, think they’d only been released for sale. Anyways it looked like a basic one, steel wheels. Looked like a bright red. One of my mates a bit after we’d left school bought an MG Metro Turbo, on P plates but I think he had trade insurance.

I used to run an F-regd metro, inherited from my granny, at 17 years old with 12k miles. Sold it 2 years later. Was a 1.3 auto, had a great amount of difficulty getting the idle speed right, it could stall at junctions a bit too often. Same problem with her previous car, a 1977 mini clubman auto. Was bought by a chap for his elderly mother, but only went through one more MOT. Shame, it was in amazing condition, I should have found an enthusiast to sell it to

Wow that was a trip down memory lane! 20 years ago I had an R-reg 100 Ascot (in BRG) as my first car… I really wanted a Rover 200 but at that age couldn’t get insured on one! Mine was identical to yours apart from the inside was cream/beige. I remember the key fob alarm, the sound when it started up… takes me back to simpler days! 😁 Sadly the arches went on mine, as did much of the rear wing… its fate was sealed when some yobs tipped it over one night when it was parked in a rough part of Luton. (That’s how light they were). Great example you’ve got there - just stumbled across your channel, looking forward to more content! 👍🏼 Cheers

Not sure what the plus was but, apparently, not many of those about. I understand it was the first Metro with engine block bolt that when straight through from top to bottom, though not sure on that. It was also designed to do almost 80+ miles per gallon but, the introduction of the catalytic converter put pay to that. Yes, I saw a metro on Just about every street where I lived. They were perfect for the learner, easy to drive and easy see all around, especially when reversing round corners and parallel parking etc. Looking forward to what you'll do with your one. The Rover Metro was launched in May 1990, on a G. The R100 launched December 94 on an M. The early Metros had the interlink on the Moulton Hydragas suspension removed to save money, but later Metros with the interlink reinstated meant the cars were now how they were always supposed to be. The car was canned in 1998, mainly due to poor NCAP crash results the year before.

Very nice and original condition! Just needs a set of original wheel trims to finish it off! Seats look very good quality for what was a cheap car even new. I remember my piano teacher back in the day (1996 ish) thought she was pretty cool by having a 1990 Metro GTa. Apparently they used to go pretty well as they weigh nothing.

I would advise checking the date codes on those tyres. I bought a Rover Metro 1.1L 2 years ago with 23,000 miles on the clock. The rear tyres were the original Dunlops from 1991 and were incredibly perished. It also has its original cambelt, with teeth hanging off!

What a great find. My first car was a 1993 Rover Metro Rio 1.1 in a similar shade of blue. Absolutely loved that car. Did many thousands of miles all over the country in it, and have many fond memories. Lost my cherry in it too, come to think of it. Sadly it succumbed to the dreaded tin worm. Even at 5 years old the rear arches were going. A guy I worked with bought it for his daughter who kept it a few more years, but apparently it failed the mot on terminal rust in the floor pans 3 years after I sold it. Presumably it was scrapped, but if anyone knows the whereabouts of L890DCK, I'd love to hear from you.
