Wouldnt say its a downgrade from the M135i, its certainly different but the R32 does everything so well for its price point. Im a fan of the change as the R32 was the best hot hatch since it was released in 2005 and held its own for a very long time. A super secure place to put your money as these are only going one way and thats up in value. MashaAllah looking forward to the content!

I'd call it a sideways move. It's a cheaper car, it's down on power and it's an older car with its quirks and issues compared to the modern M135i BUT not everyone can afford the running costs of an R32. Tax, maintenance, fuel and other things are higher here so I think it levels out. I will admit, I get a lot more looks and attention out of the R32 than M135i did and that says something. Definitely one of the best hot hatches ever made. The biggest engine ever seen in a hatchback, that's for sure. Have a soft spot for the Clio V6 as well

What a great purchase man! I see you’re driving around my endz, hope to see this R32 in the flesh. They’re my favourite Golf to date! But like you said, high maintenance so I settled for my next favourites, Polo 6C GTI. Anyway mate drive safe and looking forward to watching the rest of this build 💪

Worth paying a little extra for a a well looked after one.Have had my for for 4 years and never got bored of it, I know there is faster cars out there and ive owned some but the sound😊 of the r32. Its underated in the handling department, better than a lot of modern hot hatches especially with the addition of a bilstein suspension set up and uprated rear antiroll bar. A b road monster. Look forward to more content on it.

Definitely. Learned my lesson with my previous 55' reg "budget tax" R32. It's not about speed, it's about noise and the way the car makes you feel and the R32 has to be up there as one of the best cars ever built by VAG. Glad you're still enjoying yours after 4 years. Says a lot about the car!

Hi, I'm running a Mk5 R32 with Bilstein B8 absorbers and Eibach Pro-Kit springs as my weekend drive. Where I live roads can be rough/patchy in places but I find the Pro-Kit is a decent all-round compromise and softer than H&Rs for sure. I understand a stiffer rear bar will help balance the handling with less understeer but don't want to overdo it. What's the uprated rear anti-roll bar you recommend? Thanks!

It's a car people are scared to own. The tax band, fuel cost and the price of labour for any work really make the R32 a bit of a niche even though it's an affordable car to buy in the first place!

I actually do agree with you to a point, a car that can do 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds isn’t slow even these days. As for value, you can’t compare the mk4 r32 value trend with the mk5. The mk4 was a limited run and there are far less cars about then the mk5. That alone will keep values of the mk4 high as it’s becoming difficult to find good unmodified examples. The mk5 values will never rise like the mk4. I’ve both cars and for an everyday drive the mk5 is the best car. My mk4 has 7800 miles from new and the mk5 has 10800 miles. Both drive like new cars so the comparison between the two is like comparing them factory fresh
@CarNitty
@CarNitty 2 жыл бұрын
When I'm driving my R32 alongside my friends in 4.0 Biturbo AMGs and modern 2.0 turbocharged hot hatches, I'm constantly left in their dust. That means nothing to me as the noise makes up for it. You've hit the nail on the head about the production run of the MK4 compared to the MK5 and that will always keep the value high. The MK5 is definitely the better car but if it wasn't, that would be a backwards step for VW and it's nice to know you own 2x low mileage examples of both R32s. May they outlive us mere mortals!

Never get sick of mine. It slows down after 60, but before then it is still respectable. After a little tweaking of the ECU, Dragy shows constant 5.6s , unlaunched, in the rain or dry! But the petrol consumption for fun driving is horrible, more like that of a 5L V8.
@CarNitty

I agree. The fuel consumption is really poor specifically compared to the fact that it's only got 250bhp and a NA or supercharged V8 will produce 400-500 easily

Congrats on the purchase. Had mine for ten years now, and still puts a smile on my face! Dry stored for summer use only. Id say OEM+ is the right way to go if you're going to mod it slightly. Performance wise, i went for a full Milltek including manifolds, CAI and a remap. It does make a difference, and allows the car to rev more freely. Having said that, it will leave you wanting more after a while. So much so, that mines getting turboed later this year!! Good luck with yours 🤙

I used to own a Mk5 GTi with a mild reflash to stage 1 (220bhp), sold that and drive an R32 now. The GTi definitely feels lighter and nippier with a quicker turn-in. It had great mid-range torque but ran out of punch above 5000 revs which is opposite to the '32. The R32 feels heavier (which of course it is) which gives it the feel of a bigger car. OTOH the GTi can scrabble for grip coming out of tight to medium turns where you can plant your foot down with confidence in the '32. Aside from the noise and smooth feel of a VR6 the best part about the '32 is the throttle response of a big NA vs a smaller turbo engine. Years ago I owned a 5 cyl Fiat Coupe 20V-T and that made a great noise too, almost anything sounds better than an inline 4, LOL.
@CarNitty
@CarNitty Жыл бұрын
Noise is a big factor for a performance car in my life so as much as I respect and appreciate the GTI and other 4cyl cars, I love anything that's a 5 pot or bigger. I need to the car to sound like it's exotic and different to most other cars on the road.

@CarNitty I agree a manual box is more engaging than a semi auto. However the manual box in a mk5 r32 leaves a lot to be desired compared to other manual hot hatches. I think it has a lot to do with the engine too.... down shifts in the manual r32 aren't pleasant if your giving it some. Only way I can describe it, is always felt like you had to slip the clutch going down a gear.... like the engine drops revs too quickly inbetween down shifts. Whereas the megane rs250 I had was an absolute weapon for a manual car, I don't mean handling (although clearly it is better) I mean the engine box combo

Listen nothing compares to the r32 sound ive driven all sorts and you just can't beat it in a regular sporty hatch that's what makes the r32 stand out just how unique the car and engine are combined. Speed there's faster for sure but you can't compare a 17 year old car with a 5 year old hatch the technology moved on massively. Comfort and sound though is the best I've had.
