Can't wait to see this all fixed up!

Other problem with this era of mercedes is the cabin temp sensors are basically a consumable. I had to change mine. When they degrade the car can no longer sense what is hot and what is cold air so you get all kinds of cabin temperature problems. There are at least two sensors in the car. My one failed in the upper control panel where the interior lights are by the rear view mirror. If you unplug it then it will operate just on one temp sensor lower down in the cabin and that's one way of testing it. The other way of testing it is to bring up the real time data on the AC control panel. I don't know what the specific button presses are to get into this mode on your model but it'll read all sorts of things on the AC display including RPM, throttle position and critically for this job...upper and lower cabin temp sensor readings. If one of your sensors is broken it'll say something stupid like 50-degrees or -120 degrees or something weird like that. If you search the various forums I'm sure you'll find discussions on it. Quite easy to change once you know what you're looking for.

Be grateful the mouse used a replaceable air filter as its bed, rather than something more expensive! Nice to see a V12 saved though, hope you've got some long road trips planned!

Good luck with this venture & well done for getting the back to front badging off. I've had eight S classes down the years & I always liked them debadged. One of my eight was a w220 S500 lwb and it was a financial disaster from day one. No matter how much money I spent on that car it always wanted more. The car never actually broke down but an endless list of expensive problems ranging from the ABC pump to the duovalve just did my head in. The gear selector not wanting to go from D to P was the final straw & this was just a few months after changing the ATF fluid! A shame really as the car was undeniably smooth and comfortable. I hope you have much better luck with yours.

Why would you pay £75 on fuel for a car that you have serious doubts whether it's going to pass the MOT or not? If it's emissions related, surely drain the fuel and stick a tenner of new fuel in there...?

These rust badly in the passenger footwell , get the carpets up. Also prepare to buy new coilpacks (expensive), and new plugs (hard to replace)

Purple barge, hard to beat! Good to see it being brought back to former glory. I also always go right through a cars boot/glovebox etc when I get one and put everything back where it should be.

The rear design of this generation of Mercs is epic. So classy and still modern. There's just something about it that makes them look domineering yet classy. The facelift W203 C Class, W211 E Class and W220 S Class are my favourite C, E and S classes of all time. They feel so solid and drive so well even better than the newer models that came after it. Their new cars feel a bit frail and weak by comparison.

A big win your Mercedes Benze past its MOT in N.S.W Australia we have a yearly registration inspection but not as tougher as your MOT test the inspector takes your car for a drive and does a brake test no emissions test and no advisories if a minor thing it has to be fixed and it is for every vehicle with registration except if your light vehicle is under 5 years old unfortunately there are some Chinese built vehicles that will not pass there first rego check due to rust but my 1997 Toyota Hilux has its inspection tomorrow it should pass we do have another inspection its a blue slip its a more tougher test if your vehicle has been not registered for over three months the yearly rego check is called the pink slip as long as your lights work tyres have decent tread on them exhaust doesn't leak ect and no rust and no oil leaks the vehicle should pass

If it is a 600 without the bi turbos then it is a good buy, the 5 speed transmission is also bulletproof in those! The air suspension and if it has the ABC suspension can be a pain in the ass, also the SBC braking system is idiotic on this era of Mercedes vehicles... But when those dont have any issues they are wonderful cars and will make a great daily driver or hobby car!

Hurts me to say this, because I quite like the look of the W220 S-class, but these early cars built from late 1998 to early 2002 were plagued with issues that ranged from gear lever getting stuck in park, to the worst problem of them all: corrosion. The 2003-2006 model year W220 are more reliable (less unreliable anyway... but they don't rust) and they look much nicer.
