Always on the lookout for hidden gems, I recently came across this for just £5 - the Rockman Guitar Ace, dating from (probably) the early 1990s. I saw that Dan Hawkins had been using one in the studio, and he & I tend to have similar tastes in tone, so when I found one for sale I leapt on it.
Designed as a practice tool (so it only gives you a headphone jack for an output) you get three preset sounds and.....not much else. But was Dan onto something using it in 2021 for an album? And also...can you run it into an amp (rather than just a DI) and have it act as a clean shaper/overdrive/distortion "pedal" using a splitter cable? Let's see!

Guitar is a Gronlund R16 Redeemer Jr w/ TV Jones Ful-Fidelity Ray Butts Filter'Tron. Amp used is a Vajra JTM45 clone running into a Zilla Studio Pro 2x12 cabinet loaded with Scumback S75-PVC AlNiCo and Celestion AlNiCo Gold speakers. Recorded with Aston Spirit Condenser, '70s Sennheiser MD441 and sE RNR1 ribbon mics, with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic.
