I Bought Instant 1980's Guitar Tone For £5!! (Rockman Guitar Ace)

Always on the lookout for hidden gems, I recently came across this for just £5 - the Rockman Guitar Ace, dating from (probably) the early 1990s. I saw that Dan Hawkins had been using one in the studio, and he & I tend to have similar tastes in tone, so when I found one for sale I leapt on it.
Designed as a practice tool (so it only gives you a headphone jack for an output) you get three preset sounds and.....not much else. But was Dan onto something using it in 2021 for an album? And also...can you run it into an amp (rather than just a DI) and have it act as a clean shaper/overdrive/distortion "pedal" using a splitter cable? Let's see!
What do you think? The 1980's in a box? Or too cliched for you? Comment below!
Guitar is a Gronlund R16 Redeemer Jr w/ TV Jones Ful-Fidelity Ray Butts Filter'Tron. Amp used is a Vajra JTM45 clone running into a Zilla Studio Pro 2x12 cabinet loaded with Scumback S75-PVC AlNiCo and Celestion AlNiCo Gold speakers. Recorded with Aston Spirit Condenser, '70s Sennheiser MD441 and sE RNR1 ribbon mics, with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic.

Nice playing. The tones on the original rockman sound amazing, its basically the Hysteria album in a box. I can't understand why a pedal company hasn't reproduced a decent quality clone

Is actually a simple answer, cos of Tom Schoolz's Patents. Some company sold a improved Rockman x100 clone in the past, they got sued. If any other company tries the same they will face the same destiny.

Reason is that some components are no longer available and to build it today will be very expensive (it is an all analog unit, thou smd components can be used). Would it have sales volume? I don´t think so. There are patches for Helix (great ones) and also a Rockman X100 on Amplitube Joe Satriani. Back in the Eighties and Nineties, the Reverend Billy F. Gibbons was always touting the tonal qualities of the Rockman. And I don't even think he was ever endorsed by Scholz Research and Development.

You bought the 1980s for 5 quid. Sounds about right. I was there, in the 1980s, I think, and I wouldn't have paid much for that decade. Others will disagree...either on the price, or on the claim that I was there. And I wouldn't argue either point really. One thing that no one can argue against is that Tom Scholz is a genius.

I LOVE that DI clean tone, it's just mesmerizing. The distorted tone is not my cup of tea, too muffled. Come on Joe, now to chase the 80s tone it's time for you to get an original Boss DD-2 and maybe some digital rack effects. Turn to the Dark Side

The clean setting would be my definition of "tinny", but the overdrive was good, and high gain was nice. I bet the high gain would sound sweet with a Pultec EQ after it (although what doesn't). Looking forward to watching this year's pedalboard update, that's how I found your channel years ago, from one of your end of year builds. Cheers!

It just sounds like digital guitar tones, good for headphone usage but I wouldn't put it before a tube amp

Me too Joe - I am Anti-Social Media ( for numerous reasons ). I wish someone would re-create that Rockman Sound with an Improved signal-to-noise ratio. Such a unique sound. I had the Rockman 1/3 space-rack units. Even the chorus and the cleans were uniquely Special.

KZfaq _IS_ social media. Social media is what you make of it. Its quality is based on what the people who use it write and say on it. That's really the problem though, everyone with a brain is leaving social media because it can be so awful, leaving only the insane nutbags left on these platforms, nutter whackos who believe the world is flat and that vaccines are bad and hurt people KZfaq for how bad it can be is one of the best social media websites funnily enough. Because you can just curate a good list of subscriptions, and only ever look on your subscriptions page, never at the recommended videos page, so you ONLY see what you want to see and nothing else. I prefer that

The Rockman units are half (1/2) racks not 1/3 (I think Alesis had some of those).

Except that Phil Collen did all of Adrenalize through it so it couldn't suck that bad. I think if people just heard gear blind - we would all lose credibility of our opinions.
