As used car business owner working in Japan>Eastern Europe route, I am absolutely disgusted by the state of used cars in not just U.S but Americas as a whole... Seeing that this owner didn't even bother to clean up the car, let alone fix things up and spend 50-100 bucks to boost up the aesthetics... That's insane to me... When I buy a used car from Japan, let me tell you, the dirtiest and least taken care of ones will still look like brand new, that's how Japanese sell their used cars... And then you have U.S and Western Europe... Disgusting!

Well Mav, congratulations and good luck on your new vehicle. Stands out a little bit, for sure, looks like you got some work ahead of you. But not too shabby. I wouldn't have done it myself. I think there are better choices for something like this, certainly. And I would wonder if it would meet all your needs on a cross country trip. I don't know it's not me, I'd rather have something modern, or not do it. Because I think you're going to spend more money then it's worth, unless you're a mechanic and like doing your own work. We'll see, because you will be making videos on your project. Again, not too shabby to start. Good luck to you and You have a great attitude for the outdoors.

Crazy to think that back in the day, Wendell Atkins, who was a journeyman tool maker for GM at the Grand Blanc stamping plant back in the 60s made this monster. Globetrotter + an Oldsmobile. Crazy. He didn’t even end up finishing this project until about 1982. Molded the two 54 pickup windshields, through a thin rubber slab and some aluminum and called it good! It sounds like Tim Atkins, son of whom built the “Aironado” use to whip this thing around when it was in more of a go-cart status. Before it was built they had just a few feet of wood slab, the front end, and the dash. Half a car meeting 455. Sheesh but get this. The actual engine in that Oldsmobile was bought for cheap, it has fire damage. Everything was rewired, in which Tim specified the vacuum hoses frustrated Wendell the most. Wendell also went on to make a hydraulic hand pump that made wheels on a boat act like airplane landing gear. The arms would go up for transportation, down in the water. Crazy stuff !

I did this same sort of thing with a 27 foot motorhome. I drove it from MI to Colorado at 15 below zero. I found out that the heater didn't work and there was cold air coming from under the dash. In fact, almost nothing worked. The RV furnace kept the rig at about 40 degrees while I was driving. I also found out that truckers hated motorhomes taking up a spot at the rest-areas. Someone slashed my spare tire overnight.

My first sight of it, the first I thought I had was, he's 'officially' lost his mind, but then what I also figured was, he should separate the Airstream from the car. Then he restores the Airstream and junks the car segment. The Airstream alone is worth more than the sum as most would agree! And Mav, if u read this, don't worry, alot of us are eccentrics. Great find!! The 69 Toronado was still a very heavy car, but the 455 had the torque to haul it along! After all this time, I would be surprised if the distributor mechanical advance, and vacuum advance are still functioning correctly. This will result in sluggish performance, poor fuel economy and overheating. Also, that distributor has points and a condenser inside which need to be adjusted every 6,000 miles and replaced every 12,000, along with setting/checking the dwell to 30° or gap to 0.016" and timing. The timing varies widely between the various 455 Olds engine configurations. Have a mechanic check this stuff before heading further. If your engine is one of the higher compression models, you will need to use higher octane fuel, or the engine will rapidly become severely damaged due to detonation. Fuel is a problem, because most fuel nowadays has ethanol added, and MTBE. These chemicals are hell on old rubber hoses and old carburator parts of rubber or plastic or soldered brass, and will eat them up in short order. Have someone replace all rubber tubing in your gas system. The heads are another issue, usually you'd need to do a valve job every 40,000 miles, as in 1969, they didn't have Stellite valves and didn't use hardened valve seats. That changed in 1974 when they had to change to lead-free gas. If you do a valve job on your engine, take the heads to a good shop that does racing engines. Have them flatten the heads, put in valve seats, knurl and ream the guides, and swap in stellite valves. Not real cheap, but you'll not have to pull them again. I highly recommend using Valvoline or full synthetic oil in the engine, and change oil & filter every 4,000 miles. Use Purolator, Wix or K&N filters. Oil and filters are cheap, engines are expensive and inconvenient. At around 100,000 the timing chain and sprocket will be worn enough to suddenly give you big problems, like the engine stops running suddenly while the camshaft goes out of time and bends all the intake valves. So, replace the timing chain, camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket before you spend lots more money replacing lots of valves. I suggest replacing your old alternator with a new GM 140A alternator; it will charge your batteries much faster and will be more reliable. Best of luck with this, man -- what a fun project!

Like another commenter mentioned, Mav's getting himself a Jay Leno type garage, but with campers and RUV's (Recreational Utility Vehicles). Note Dame's called the Fighting Irish. They have a little Leprechaun dude for a mascot. One thing that's extremely frustrating whenever you purchase a new "used" car or a car/truck/camper creation is when you have a bunch of little issues go out at once. Or worse than that, is when the minor glitches become MAJOR issues and things go from bad to OMG! In minutes! The radio 📻 issue can easily be remedied with your own "home entertainment" package plans for later. The air issue isn't fun at all especially in the winter. Hypothetically IF your truck/car Frankencamper loses any heat? That could be a really crappy ride home. Especially if the interior windows freeze up. This machine does have some really nice features and the potential to make it into a really wild Frankencamper is something that could tempt anyone to make a similar beast! Congratulations on your newest Toy! Merry Christmas and Have a Wonderful and safe NEW YEARS!

That's a cool rig, the Toronado (Oldsmobubble) was the sister to the El Dorado. It should have a 455CID big block in it. Get the best you can for CV axle, that beast should be a torque monster. Have them check the rubber boot for the other side, if it's torn, moisture probably got in. You'll hear a clicking noise when turning if they're on their way out. IF it has the OEM tank, should be about a 24 gals. tank, probably looking at 10mpg or less with all the added weight of the Airstream added on. But, those engines make loads of power.

@@stevejeffrey11 I would rather get a modern rig within 3-5 years of age than to buy anything over 10 years old. The older it is, the more work, the more money, the more time sink it is whilst the pros of a modern vehicle would be warranties, easier to work on, etc etc.

Interesting rig Mister....check the final drive bolts that hold the differential to that 425R transmission. They are known to loosen over time and cause enough gap that the splines disengage from the final drive....similar effect to a stripped out CV axle.

Rule 1; if fuel gauge doesn't work fill the tank before you leave. Note the odometer reading drive three hours or approximately 150 miles. Fuel it again and compute the mileage. Rule 2; find a flexible stick and slide it down filler neck and mark the level before refueling and then when full. Now knowing the level before and after fueling you can estimate the percentage of fuel in the tank used out of the tank before fueling. Now you will know how full the tank was when you started. Rule 3; calculate the tank capacity by using the gallons it took to fill it and the rough percentage that it was. Rule 4; figure, based off of the miles per gallon you used, and your estimated tank capacity you will know roughly your maximum miles between fill ups. Just remember to give yourself at least fifty miles worth of fuel in the tank before refueling. Mav, why didn't you figure it was a two day trip? Fly down one day, see the RV, make the deal. Find a mechanic shop that can get it in and do a mechanical inspection on it that afternoon or the next day while you catch an Uber to a motel and campout there overnight. Then figure based on the inspection you can either take off, stay another night in the motel or find a rental to drive home. I know, hindsight is always 20/20, and age brings "wisdom".

that sounded exactly like the broken CV joint in my old Pontiac, so hopefully that is all that's wrong. that much weight on a front wheel drive like that may prove to be a recurring problem unless you can find a heavy duty setup. Looks to be a fun project and I look forward to the seeing videos you make with it.

Man, I’ve been an Oldsmobile fan for a long time and I’ve seen pictures of this thing on the Internet and always wished I could buy it. Too bad I don’t know you because I’m not far from Rockford where you broke down. I might’ve been able to at least help get the gas pedal fixed. I have a 69 Toronado myself! They’re great cars. Hopefully the repair to get you back on the road isn’t too terrible. Good luck bud. Great channel!

To rough calculate capacity of any tank in gallons measure it's (average) length, heighth and width IN INCHES. Multiply the three numbers together, take the total and divide by 231. The result is the tank capacity in US gallons. Keep in mind you should never fill any gasoline container completely full and also that the fuel pump pickup can't get the last little bit out of a tank. Always a good idea to drive as if the engine may quit at any time + carry couple jerry cans of fuel, too.
