The long awaited review of every gold printmaking ink that I could get my hands on. In this video I test print every ink and give my general impressions on each of the inks. I have ink brands such as: Cranfield, Speedball, Akua, Blick, Charbonnel, Hanco, Renaissance Graphics, Letterpress inks, Graphic Chemical, Schmincke, Essdee, and Hawthorn Printmakers. Super thorough investigation of all things gold relief inks. Not boring at all, perfect amount of time for each ink. A classmate of mine was recently on a hunt for gold ink, so I forwarded to her & I'm sure she'll enjoy it. Thanks for your hard work.

I‘m really glad to have stumbled on your video by accident. I‘m looking for a decent gold ink for a while now and considered buying the akua ink. But now I don‘t. I usually use Schmincke inks for all my prints because a) I like them very much b) they‘re from Germany and therefore it‘s a local brand for me and c) I just like waterbased inks. I mix the metallics with a bit of extender so they do not dry too fast.

Thank you for this awesome video! My studio partner and I have tested many of the same inks as you in video. Until now, Cranfield, Adana and Gerstaecker Buchdurckfarbe in Gold were the best regarding the opacity and color. If you are somewhere in Europe/UK - Adana and Gerstaecker are just as good as Cranfield, you can barely tell the difference! But I woudn't call their gold "gold", it's more warm/copper leaning. The last weeks we have tried the Hawthorn Printmakers one in Light Gold and it is amazing! It is less warm, more green/yellow (but still quite warm) and as opaque as the other ones I mentioned. Hawthorn "Medium Gold" is comparable to the Cranfield/Adana/Gerstaecker Gold - "Deep Gold" is like Cranfield/Adana Copper. I would recommend a fine scale to weigh the ratio of the two Hawthorn mixing bases, as the gold pigment is much heavier than the medium, or an approximate 1:2 ratio as you did. We haven't tried the Hawthorn copper and bronze jet - and they also have shimmering green, blue and purple hues! We are so curious about those colors and will definitely try them out. If someone knows a more cool yellow bright opaque gold oil based ink, share it!

Very helpful! Would you be able to share the drying time for these inks? I'm figuring out which ink would be the best for my household with cats that can and will get their fur on anything 🙃

Thank you so much. I'm in the UK so defo going to try out the hawthorns inks. Tried to essdee but it's not pigmented enough for darker or jewl toned paper. This has been really helpful. 😊

Thanks for the video - it's saved me some money. I've been using Cranfield and it's excellent, but I was hoping for a quicker drying one. The water-based ones I've tried are a bit rubbish though and I was about to buy Schminke before I did a KZfaq search. I guess I'll be sticking with Cranfield!
