Do scratches even matter on the front element? Dust inside the lens? What if you found the deal of a lifetime for the best lens ever made? Can we even see the issues? Used lens buying is fun I tells ya :) We are trying out the vintage Zeiss Planar 50mm f1.4 on the Canon EOS R. Comparing it to the Sirui Nightwalker 55mm f1.2. And answer photographers. Is the Panasonic G9 or S5 originals worth buying? Was the Sony RXI0V good? Where's the RX10V? How do I do daily uploads on youtube? Best vlogging gear, Nikon Z30 or Sony ZV1?

Years ago I worked as an assistant for a top food commercial photographer. We used 8x10 view cameras and his favorite lense was a Schneider 240 mm. The lens had a scratch in the the middle of the front element. It made incredible sharp photos.

A scratch on the front element will reduce contrast and cause some weirdess in the bokeh but sharpness will still be good.
@ivandj707

The damage to the front glass affects the flare and bokeh balls a bit (scratches are visible), but no big deal, the problem arises with the damage to the rear glass of the lens - it is no longer usable (except maybe for some effects). So please be happy with this purchase, the color rendering is excellent and the sharpness is as it should be for cinematic video.

if you think about it, the scartches make up maybe 1% of the surface area, it hardly matters.

I own the z30/12-28 PZ VR combo. It’s a lightweight little setup. It lacks the bells and whistles (Log, 10bit, 4k60) most other cameras in that cohort have. I believe Nikons target market for that camera was more social media content creators than filmmaker/cinematic KZfaqrs. For the price, it’s not a bad setup for more people. The stabe on the lens works well and being able to go wide to normal focal lengths is great for vlogging/travel stuff. Found my setup used for around $800.

I watched the EverydayDad when he was sub 20k subs (hipster statement I know). One thing that I think allows him to upload with the consistency he does is his video series formula. He has different series (unboxing and initial impressions, x product 2 months later, should you buy x in 2023, etc.) on his show. Developing a formula gives you more of an idea of what you’re actually going to create on a consistent basis. One of the hard things of being a KZfaqr is sometimes just figuring out what video you wanna make. When you have a formula you stick to it makes it easy.

contrast goes down no matter what, in the shade too. You're basically looking right at the scratch, but so blurrily that it fills the entire frame, thus acting like a very thing layer of vaseline. Definitely still useable, but noticeably worse if you have two copies to compare side by side.

Well - as far as I can remember : this Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.4 has quite a nice rendering , being rather a bit soft at 1.4-2.0 and then catching up on sharpness pretty darn big from 2.8 ( which is already really really good) up to 4 and 5.6 ! There it was supposed to be among the sharpest Zeiss Lenses -- so really not that bad at all !

I have realized 100-400 on full frame is perfect for my squirrel videos. Sigma is decent on the Sony A7IV. I had the LUMIX G9 with Leica 100-400, but it wasn’t fun to manually focus at 180 fps. 800 mm reach isn’t as critical as I thought. I’ll take autofocus at 120 fps on the Sony. HD is ok but would like 4K. I miss Everyday Dad’s camera reviews.

A scratch on the front element is not nearly as important as a scratch on the back. Clean the scratch with distilled water on a damp q-tip. Scratch remover won't fix the scratch, but it will remove the white crud. It won't really work any better, but you will feel better about it. Because I am but a lame photographer, the 3-d pop of your new scratch and dent lens shook me to my very core. I clapped my hands over my quaking eyeballs (like see-no-evil) and prayed for bokeh to come and hide the scary third dimension from my fragile, timid soul. When I removed my hands, the video was over and I was safe.

Just about to start watching but saw you written intro. As a G9 user I can unequivocally say that the G9 is the deal of a lifetime. So feature packed and solid as a rock. Anyone here knows its shortfalls, mainly the CDAF. But, I use mine set up inside and with decent light I never have the AF problems others talk about. I do understand the limitations for R&G Video and Wildlife/Sports but it still holds up very well for basic video. So I do respectfully disagree with your take on the G9. They're so cheap now you can afford a couple of G9's for less than most new cameras. Always use case dependant of course.

I have a nice collection of Zeiss lenses.. I recommend getting the older Contax Zeiss lenses.. they're even nicer than the Zeiss Classics (what you have) ..., they originally come with C/Y mounts or QBM mounts.., but you can get adapters, or buy them with permanent adapters like I did.. my 85/1.4 and 35/1.4 HFT Zeiss lenses actually have triangular aperture blade (very rare) and they have the most amazing vintage look.. ( because many films from the late 70s / early 80s used the original Zeiss Super Speed cinema lenses and those also have the triangular blades / bokeh that I'm talking about.. the triangular bokeh it makes looks so cool.. Idk why bought such a damaged lens lol... it better have been like $50 cause those are some thick scratches there.. i still have one Zeiss Classic.. its a 35/1.4 ... OH, reminds me!!! you can also get the original Zeiss lenses.. Zeiss Jena.. they will be cheaper than the Contax versions and look even more retro.. only issues are less contrast and more prone to flares.. but they are significantly cheaper.. they are still sharp though and have even better close focusing distances.. however, most of them only open up to like.. 2.8.. thanks for the content as always..!

I had same, it is well known zeiss optical scheme for projectors, with unfortunately bad anti-flare anti-stray-light tricks. It is even noted in description as "special soft lens for portraits", for me bad excuse as marketing tricks to warn user for lack of contrast. I have no idea why we do not use Zeiss trickery like paint edge of elements with black lacquer and use more layers for AR coating. We have almost all Zeiss knowledge and even enhanced it, but that "smooth portrait lens" make me mad, it is outcast almost everyday here and that lens make it even more flat and dull.

I prefer not to use damaged lenses but my limited experience with them is that the loss of sharpness and brighness is worst when wide open and then abates a bit when you stop them down. Magical optics is a very delicate and elusive thing to achieve so going the damaged lens route isn't the right way.

If you had to go one month only using one camera and your choices were the Olympus E-1 or the Sony Venice 2 (8k version) which would you choose? You get to have every lens available for the one you choose and a $500,000 budget for accessories.

Late to the party, and you prob know this by now, just use EF on aps-c canon cameras, it actually uses the better part of most lenses. And yeah, you prob were jesting, scratches on front of most lenses are no big deal, but if you hit it with fine sandpaper you may or may not like the effect ;-)

I mean this in the best way possible and it’s a compliment, so I hope you take it that way. Damn you are one weird, corky person haha. I don’t have a clue of what your talking about but I’m curious about doing some very amateur vids about my pride and joy project car, thus I found your channel in my research. G2G, my cat is attacking my foot!!!
