I bought the cheapest BMW GS I could find on the internet.
It's a 1999 BMW R1150 GS Oil head and In this video I show what I check when buying a used motorcycle.
I've bought it as a project motorcycle so that I could start adventure motorcycle riding and become an Adventure Bike Rider, bringing another element to this channel. I need to mention I bought it off the internet without seeing it for £2295 and this was the cheapest at the time and that's because It had no service history with it, so this is all a new experience and an exciting one at the same time.
This is Episode 1 - I document the condition of the motorcycle project to see if it is actually as good as it looks or If it's going to need a lot of work.
Thankfully, as far as motorcycle projects go, it doesn't need anything substantial with regards to work but will need a good deep service and will need all the rusty parts replaced.
www.motorworks.co.uk - is where I have been buying the parts for this project. I am not affiliated with the company but I have had a good experience with them so thought I'd share.

Thanks for watching this Video. In Hindsight, I would've made this video a lot differently but we live and learn. Don't be scared to attempt your own repairs, servicing, or projects. Episode 2 is now available and I’ve also made a playlist to add all of the GS videos to 👍🏻

Bought an 1100GS in 94 and bought an 1150GS as soon as they came out. Still got the 1150 after 24 years despite having had cam heads and LCs since. Great bike. Just had her latest mainly cosmetic overhaul. Can be fixed without a computer (mostly) and despite what people say does work off road. I was living for years in SE Asia and spent a lot of time travelling thru Vietnam, laos, cambodia, China and so long as you're not racing off road it's fine. STEERING's heavy but the bike isn't that much heavier than a 1250 (if at all after all the stuff people put on them). 150K on the 1100 and 1150 and only big problems were paralever bearing going and fuel distribution thingy splitting (twice). Wilbers shocks work well on these, just keep your eye on the diff, rear drive and crappy wiring sheaths and they will last forever.

Hiya mate. Thanks for watching and commenting. That’s some great experience and the travels sound incredible! The bike has now had a good service to make sure it’s all good but yes, the wiring is now being delved in to because it’s in a right state and causing starting issues 😄 all fun and games ay 😆

No problem at all, thanks for watching! I hope you have as much fun enjoying your GS as I have. Mine is still a work in progress because I wanted to ride it - currently in Scotland with it so I’m hoping it will get me around the 500 miles and home again without issue 😄. When do you start restoring yours?

@@MALVSMACHINEFrom what I have heard they are known to be reliable workhorses so I have no doubt it will take you there and back again :) The plan is to start with the brakes as soon as I get access to our new house in about two weeks. The bigger jobs will start when winter is approaching since I want to ride it this summer/autumn.

I’ve just bought an 1150gs as a project. Also the cheapest on the internet but not in as good condition as yours…… in fact in considerably worse condition!🤣 At just over 700quid though I can’t complain too much! 💷💪

I had to take a look at this when I saw the headline. I bought one last year - also the cheapest on eBay - a bargain at 2k with full luggage, 69k miles, I serviced it and took it to South of Spain through France in August 🥵. Amazing adventure, bike is great though very heavy for me, rides very light though once moving and comfortable. Only downer was the rear drive bearing failed on the last day on the Peage south of Bordeaux - two days stuck in the middle of nowhere until I found a great BMW mechanic in Bordeaux and limped the bike there where he fixed it the same day and off I went home. Breakdown insurance was fairly useless. All part of the trip. Good luck with yours I will keep an eye on what you are doing with it.

Hiya mate, thanks for taking the time to share your experience. It’s very helpful and apart from the bearing failure, sounds like an awesome trip! Definitely something I’d like to do with mine in the future. I’ll be getting stuck in to that rear drive section in a couple of weeks so will be interesting to see what it’s like in there 😬.

@@MALVSMACHINE yes the trip was great, we camped and even wild camped in Spain a few nights. My first bike in 25 years too but I am hooked again! I do most of my own repairs on cars, bikes etc I am an engineer. If you have no service records and want to go big distances then it's worth looking at the rear drive and the clutch. If I keep mine I want to get at the clutch and also grease the output shaft. My clutch started slipping a bit after a long mountain climb in the Pyrenees, with lots of stop start due to traffic. It may have just been the heat and load or it's close to the end of life?. Apparently they go gradually so you're unlikely to lose it without plenty of warning. If you like people who build interesting machines then check out The Doghouse customs guy who builds a lot of bobbers but has been putting a set of upside down forks on an 1150 GS removing the parallever front end. He's a nice guy and skilled fabricator/ bike builder.

@@leo5verling334 that sounds absolutely awesome! It’s great that you got back on a bike after all that time, I like it when people get back in to bikes after a bit of time off, it shows how addictive they are 😄, a good choice of bike as well 👌🏻. I’m glad you never had issues at the beginning of the trip as well, that would’ve proper put a downer on getting back in to it ay! Thanks very much, there’s nothing at all, but the MOT history looks decent. I’ll definitely look at that rear drive and clutch now that you’ve mentioned it, I’m not in a rush to get it on the road so will give the areas a check over so that it’s absolutely ready to ride 👍🏻. Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll have a nose to see what he’s up to, will give me a break from editing videos 😄.

Great bikes. Had the later l/c GSA and an RS. Started with an 80’s RT100 and R65 which I toured France on. Didn’t miss a beat. Worth checking wheel bearings, clutch thrust bearing and clutch, timing chain tensioner, head bearings and wheel bearings as they’re getting to that age. Suspension if not already done might benefit from a rebuild. I’d also drop out FD shaft to re grease splines and check for play. Simple bikes to work on and should go around the clock with regular maintenance. I rode that same model when it first came out and it seemed very tall at the time but rode brilliantly. Telelever takes a little getting used to but once you do, you should find the lack of front dive and steadiness in corners a boon. Now have a 5 yr old R1200rs and it’s been fantastic up until now but they all suffer from engine casing corrosion if used year round. They need regular cleaning and lots of acf50!

Hi, they are indeed. Thanks for watching and commenting. Looks like you’ve had your fair share of BMWs! It’s been great fun learning about motorcycle maintenance on the bike and riding it has been fun. It’s incredible how capable it is for such a big bike. I made a few episodes about it so have been in to some of the bits you’ve mentioned and serviced it, but the bits I’ve not done yet will be done when I get a new bike so I can delve in a bit further and give it some love. It’s sad the way they corrode isn’t it, was quite shocked at how bad some of the areas are.

@@MALVSMACHINE Lanoguard is your friend. As long lasting as XP rust blocker (or better than) without being as gunky, and out lasts acf50 for the vulnerable undersides and engine casings. Applied early enough, it'll keep most bikes or cars practically corrosion free👍

You probably know, but there is a drain in that filler neck to let water flow out, it's pretty small-bore and easily blocked. I couldn't get mine clear so stripped it off and ultrasonically cleaned it. I'll keep an eye on it now!
@MALVSMACHINE
@MALVSMACHINE 11 ай бұрын
Thanks man, I believe it was the drain hole that was blocked which caused the build up of water leading to the rust but I gave it a good clean out with the dremel and a pipe cleaner before I sprayed it, and it seems to be working well now. Those ultrasonic cleaners look great! I think having one would’ve helped me a lot with the filler 😄.

I recently bought a BMW R850R, 97. It has leads from the battery that allow me to charge without removing the seat. Neat trick eh. So, what distinguishes the GS from the R and RT ? I think the GS stands taller and must have different suspension. Great bikes! Cheers.

Nice! I recently fitted a charger cable to mine and replaced the USB charger so that my battery stops being drained, it’s working quite well too 😄. Hi, thanks for the question. So it cost £2295 and I bought it after seeing the advert of it online on eBay and autotrader. The shop was in Merseyside and they’d taken it in as part exchange. I made the payment over the phone on the proviso that it was a runner, and collected it the next day. I had to sign paperwork on arrival agreeing that I could not ride the bike away as it had not been checked over due to being sold as a trade bike, and the sales person was adamant that I got it checked over before riding it which brings us to this video 😁.
