Okay the engine is probably (mostly okay). Think this through: the AOS is *definitely* shot and needs to be replaced. In the process it has likely coated the cats and O2 sensor in oily garbage leading to it struggling to keep idle and rev. 1) Replace AOS, and run a few bottles of injector cleaner+93 octane at high RPM. 2) The old italian tune up + new spark plugs. May need new 02 sensors too. 3) Replace oil and add Liquimoly MOs2. Do not overfill the oil. Keep running 93 octane+injector cleaner and driving the snot out of it to try and de-gunk the cats.

This suggestion overlooks the known facts that the previous owner bought some expensive new rear tires and battery; observed an oil consumption issue; had a spark plug removed and did a compression test, a leakdown test, and an endoscope (or all three); was so discouraged with the results that he/she left the coil pack in the trunk; and gave the car away for the tiny return of an income tax deduction (for a high earner, tax savings of 24% of the claimed value).

You need to start with correct amount of oil in the engine. Could be as simple as this. Either way, it’s an easy thing to eliminate.

Number one - your engine oil is overfilled. Your oil level gauge top bar should not be lit. These engines run better with oil level half way filled. Overfilling will destroy your AOS. You should have drained the oil first.

Quick easy check, try removing the oil filler cap with the engine running, if you can’t get the cap off it’s the oil separator creating to much vacuum in the oil system and oil is getting sucked into the intake. Hence all the smoke coming out of the exhaust

I'm not a mechanic. But I own a 2008 Cayman S and do the maintenance myself. I'm fairly convinced you have a bad AOS. And if overfilled with oil, basically dumping it straight into the cylinders with crank case pressure. Albeit, that's more smoke than I thought possible. It's likely not bore scoring because the smoke would never have cleared. It's classic AOS failure. My prescription is new plugs, new AOS, new air filter, new coil packs, oil change using Driven DT40, new brake pads, cabin filter, pull the entire intake off and clean it out, a detail and remove that bed liner (fingers crossed), new front tires, maybe some used Porsche turbo wheels from the period, and work that leather until it's soft again. Also replace the radio with a touch screen. Then you can sell it for like $25k. Get a leak down test. That'll tell you if bore scoring is present. A diagnosis that is quite over blown and usually caused by deferred maintenance along with lead footed cold starts. Yes, the nikasil liners can start coming apart. But it's not as prevalent as people think. Plenty of these engines approaching 200k miles out there. If you find that you do indeed have a bore scoring issue, LM Engineering is where I'd go with it.

Would always recommend oil change before start if you’re not sure. Would ensure proper level and no risk of over/under filling. Cheap way to avoid the grenade.

It makes perfect sense. On BMWs the oil separator will stop up also and smoke heavily. My X5 did this. BMWs don't like short trips where the engine doesn't get fully warmed up. Moisture builds up in the valve cover and eventually destroys the oil separator diaphragm causing massive smoke. I had a coworker who sold his car because he thought it was blown up. It was a worn out oil separator.

987 owner here.. So I had all the problems demonstrated in the video. I'd say in your case definitely change the AOS. I'd would inspect the engine for scoring, although with the AOS functioning properly, what you would see is a lot of smoke on a cold start, and then it would clear up if the engine had some bore scoring. The end off the video where it struggled to rev. Is most likely the CATs being clogged with oil. I had to have my CATS and AOS and ultimately my engine rebuilt on my 2008 Boxster S.

Also.. my 987.1 had about 30K miles when I figured out I had Cylinder Wall scoring (looking back it probably had this issue since 20K miles in my case) So the car in the video with 105K in the clock, I'm hopeful for you all, that its just AOS.

i think most of the smoke came from overfilling, bad air/oil seperators dont help either though. Drain more oil out, or just simply do a full on oil change. All the smoke coming out after the seperators were plugged in briefly couldnt have been caused by oil seaping past the piston rings and into the combustion chamber, its too much smoke, and too long lasting for that to be it. i'd recomend trying to clean the carter vent hoses leading to the separators, and cleaning/replacing the seperators. Also i'd try to clean the combustion chambers, maybe by using some fuel additive and tanking premium gas for a while, since the oil coming into the chambers cannot folly combust and will likely leave loads of carbon buildup, eventually leading to sticky valves, and at worst complete valve failure making a full on engine rebuild neccesarry. With future cars i'd really really recommend draining and refilling the oil when your not sure at what level it is at, If you get too much non-compressable oil in the combustion chambre, instead of compressable air, you actually have a chance of blowing head gaskekts because of overfilling. And once again the carbon buildup won't do any good for your engine. Wishing you guys the best with this project!

This brings back memories to me of my denial of bore score on my 2006 987S. Changed the oil air separator, thinker oil, and new filter. Finally was putting in a quart every 300 miles and the knocking was getting so loud! Had a full engine rebuild and had steel liners put in. Now had her back 3 years done 5K miles and doesn’t drink any oil, sounds amazing and pulls so strong. I reckon you need to do a bore scope and keep your fingers and toes crossed.

I watched a PCA video discussing the bore scoring issue. From what I remember, the bottom of the cylinder is where the scoring normally occurs. You must scope the engine from the drain pan and look at the bottom of the cylinder walls. Also normally the cylinders on the right bank fail.

I owned a Cayman Base and my AOS went out. The volume of smoke was identical despite the engines being different. Had AOS replaced and issue was resolved. Later saw video on how AOS unit is replaced and almost wish I had done it myself. The gentleman who made that video has posted here. Cayman 987s are very different than Boxters from the same era, and better because of the added rigidity that body is a hardtop. These cars are the best sports cars you can buy for the money. Once fixed, and very dependent on the mileage, a car like this can command as much as $30k+. Especially one like this with lap chronometer right in the top middle of the dash. If the engine did turn out to be toast, you can still recover your investment parting it out. EBay/etc. Oh, after the AOS replacement; expect some smoke, unless anything related is not taken apart and wiped clean. Once AOS is the likely possibility, running it is just adding more oil to associated parts. GOOD LUCK!

Yup, AOS issue I think. Change it, change the oil and fill to the proper level this time, change the spark plugs and then give it a chance to burn off any residue left in the pipework etc. I think it could be OK. Most bore scoring happens before that mileage.

Compression test and bore scope to see if it is worth investing in parts. If it has compression and not a lot of scoring, change the oil, plugs and AOS. Maybe the mass air sensors. Then run it. Might have messed up cats by now as well.

Bad oil separator is also a massive vacuum leak past the MAF, making it not run right now. Replace that thing, make sure the vacuum hoses are all sealed up properly, drain all the oil, do an oil change and refill the correct amount. Change spark plugs. Clean the heck out of your intake tract BEFORE you try starting it up again.

Pro Tip. Buy a small Lithium jump battery and keep it in the cockpit somewhere. I know there isn't much room but do it. Along with the battery, get a patch cord that will plug it into the OBD2 port. Opening frunk problem solved. I've done that twice now, at first borrowing a big one from my mechanic. Edit: I saw you have a NOCO. If you had just gotten a cable that would plug into the OBD2 port, the frunk would open.

They might have poured oil in the cylinders in order to ensure that they are not locked, you might be burning the oil that they soaked in the cylinders. It looks like the rings are falling tho…

Change the AOS, plugs, coils, oil change. Jake Raby builds a great engine but not all Porsche engines have bore scoring as he suggests. Good luck, hope you get it figured

Do you guys not know there's an easier way to open both trunks..?? Take the 3 or 4 wee rubber plugs off the sill cover next to the drivers seat. Then use a 4 or 6mm allen key to remove the blots. Then lift off the cover where the levers are then move the magnet out the way and pull the cable or lever.. works for me every time.. 😊

The not revving is because your MAF sensor is covered in oil now because of the AOS. gotta clean the MAF sensor

Try this: Add one gallon of oil through the filler tube. Add 1/2 cup of oil through each spark plug hole. If you open up the exhaust put a cup of talcum powder just ahead of each cat. Add a full cup of powder very near to or inside of the air intake. Now fire ‘er up. The smoke should stop.

why not just drain the oil and put fresh in before you even mess with it. Seems easier than guessing if there is oil, how old the oil is, or what is floating around in the oil

Compression test. Figures out issues quickly. Not a hard fix. But being a porsche the engine difficult access makes it very difficult.

While cleaning my 996 yesterday I found the trunk pull on the top of the passenger door jamb. Just above the top of the top hinge.

The engine is toast go to autozone & rent a borescope camera & look in the cylinder. There's no way this car would be thrown away for an air oil separator if it's been to shops to get new tires & a battery. Now, if it was sitting, maybe it went bad with time, but the engine in this is done for guaranteed

When the battery died in my 2007 Cayman, I attached the (+) lead of my NOCO booster battery to the red pull-out tab & the (-) lead to the chassis (in the door jamb). It was enough to allow me to open the trunk. Worked fine :)

Bought a car smoking like that thought the engine was bad replaced the PCV VALVE and it cleared right up when it stick or goes bad it won't ventilate the engine.

Porsche Club of America just did a 4 video series on bore scoring. They mentioned that if you're scoping through the spark plug hole you might not see any scoring but it could still be there further down-if you can see the scoring from the plug hole its too late. I have also heard it theorized that the colder the climate the more likely there is bore scoring.

There are plenty of on line details concerning AOS failure and the evidence suggests thats exactly what you have. When you have extreme bore scoring you would also expect to hear an associated sound to accompany it withnthe extreme oil burn you are seeing. The engine to me (Boxster S owner for some years) did not sound unduly rattly when it was initially running okay. For the cheap cost, AOS, plugs and intake clean of oil may suffice, although you may have damaged the four cats due to continued running. Good luck.

Good job, I had a 987.1S and I was obsessing about bore scoring and learned exactly how the car sounds - this DOES NOT sound like bore scoring, it sounds perfect! Just replace the AOS.

Drain oil, refill with half the needed amount, remove spark plugs and check compresion on all cylinders. If equally and ok, then new aoc, plugs and top up oil.. Perhaps you are still lucky, even though the odds seems almost …0..

Drop the oil pan and scope the cylinders. Almost guaranteed it has some scoring, but might not be bad enough to kill the engine. Worth finding out for sure. If the engine is toast, do an LS swap!! 😁

The high pitched squeeling sound is the AOS. I had the same sound on my Porsche with NO engine lights.

I would scope it and do a compression and leak down test. If those are good replace the separator and change out oil and plugs.

That AOS is definitely shot. Even after you replace the AOS it will smoke for a number of miles. You need to clean the whole intake system including the throttle body. Also need to replace all the plugs. Number 6 cylinder will fill with oil if the AOS diaphragm is torn. So stop running the engine. Your cats will also be damaged from continuously running the engine in this condition. Drain the oil. Check the filter for metal. Take a sample of the oil. At that mileage replace the injectors (leaky injectors will cause bore score). Betting the oil analysis will show high fuel content. Replace the AOS and plugs. Scope the cylinders for bore score. You may see a little, but nothing that would explain that amount of smoke.

Looks like the oil is pouring out the exhaust when it was idleling. The engine does not sound horrible though but the smoke is unreal. Can you manually check the oil level? If so do, maybe the sensor is bad. But for now it burning oil at a unheard rate. But still you could be lucky. Maybe overfilled and so much oil left in the system that just burns? One thing is sure, it's not a healthy enviroment to be in driving it now 😁

You also can check the oil with the key in position 2. It does it every time you start the car before the engine turns over. For people who've apparently owned 30 of these you havent learned a lot.

White smoke is a sign of coolant mixing with oil…. Drain the coolant and oil, then replace seals.

Front trunk release is a wire loop inside the front wing exposed when the passenger door is open.

I don’t know much about Porsche, but valve stem seals can go bad and let oil past them into the piston and exhaust. Burning off causing the white smoke.

We’ll replace the oil separator if it helps great if not send it to compartments or give it away for channel support if someone got this for say $100 for merch it would be worth the car to get the motor rebuilt.

I’ve had 5 Porsches. 3 987 S and two I992S. I think it’s the air oil separator. Non Porsche mechanics get lazy and blame bore scoring. I would Also replace all 4 coil packs. Same happened with my old 987 cayman

That whistling was definitely from a bad oil separator diaphragm. Replace those and scope the cylinders

That much oil through running through there, I would bet some plugs would be oil fouled, by now...

Lads check the air oil separator. You massively overfilled the oil too. Did you reinstall the coil pack. I did a video on vreplacing the AOS on a 987.1 986.2 so check it out. The intake will also be full of oil. Easy fix

It may be the thermostat. I had a very simular experience with my Previa where it would flume out white smoke for abt 5 mins after starting and would clear up as I drove with occasional overheating. I replaced the thermostat and saw the old one was stuck shut and never had the issue since. Granted these are very different cars but it may be worth looking into. Much cheaper than a new block lol.

Definitely not a thermostat issue. Car isn't over heating. It is the AOS and the squealing that goes with it. I had the issue.

I'm thinking this was someone's track toy. It would explain the bed liner paint on the areas that would get some rock chips from hitting a gravel pit, also the aftermarket wheels. Owner thought it had some bad scoring and traded in for a fresh one, dealer saw the scoring and dumped it.

Drain all the oil and refill with the correct type/quantity. Then replace the AOS and take the car for a burn down the runway 👍 Then you will know 🙈🙈

The engine sounded health, the problem was from the residual oill, then more oil got to the system. AOS might be causing that, O2 sensor, shot Cats, bad coils/sparkplugs, clean up the injections, and fill with proper oil and additives. It doesn't sound like major mechanical component (fingers crossed)

I have a 987.2, I think your AOS is bad and you put way too much oil on the refill, which could be a reason for all the smoke. They say over-filling is really bad, worst than running it low. Change your AOS, sparks, and coil overs, and new oil change. Don't give up, the 987 platform is a blast.

Do a borescope, than you know for shure. AOS might be toast. Engine rebuild with resleeving is cheaper and more duarable than another engine that will probably get the issue again.

Thought it was burning coolant, since oil only produces blue smoke, but the white smoke went away? The engine heated up and sealed a bad head gasket is what I'm thinking now?

What we have here is regression to the mean. Assume a random, bell shaped distribution of the oil consumption of Boxsters and Caymans. You can buy five of them with no issues, cars falling in the thin, right hand part of the bell shaped curve. But if you buy enough of them, you will eventually match the shape of the random distribution, with most units falling in the fat, middle part of the curve, and with some better and some worse.

“Staying perfectly cool”. FYI that water temperature gauge will ALWAYS read 175. It’s an idiot light dress like a gauge. Plug in live diagnostics for actual water temperature.

Engine restore additive with CLS or send it to Vagas for a Renegade Corvette conversion or EV west in San Diego for EV conversion.
