Cheapest Ram 4th Gen 3500 4x4 Mega Cab Diesel SRW!
It was time for an upgrade and we went BIG. 1 Ton, Cummins Diesel, Mega Cab, 4x4. We had been hunting for a big truck for some time. We knew the kids were getting taller and we wanted to be able to tow plus we needed the 4x4 for Montana winters. After looking at the Mega Cab everything else just seems like a compromise we didn't want to make.

We paid $32,000 for the truck. At the time that was easily the cheapest 4th gen 3500 4x4 with the 6.7l Cummins and the Mega Cab. We did not go with the Dually because of the size of the truck. We live on a very narrow road and the DRW was just too much. We are looking for a mid 30's length 5th wheel and I decided this was the best setup for regular driving, towing, and traveling with the whole family.

Make sure the fuel filters get replaced often. Soon as it hits like 10% life, get them replaced. The emissions after treatment, mainly the diesel particulate filter and diesel exhaust fluid pump or heater tend to go out. When a maintenance required message comes up on the dash, that would be for the Crankcase Ventilation Filter that sits under the front of the engine cover. That gets done at every 67,500 miles.

You might want to pull those floor mats and take a look. Great place to throw some emergency hand tools. I even found a Tuffy locking cover for one of mine to stow a weapon if I need to go into a courthouse, etc... I love the Ram puck system in the bed. I use the gooseneck ball to mount my Andersen Ultimate 5th wheel hitch. I can go from a 5th wheel hauler to a bare bed pickup in about 5 minutes. Love the puck system. Great looking truck...!!!

Everything else, not so much. Other than normal service, I've also replaced the water pump, a/c compressor, windshield wiper motor, heater control panel, and just recently at 305K new ball joints, tie rod ends, and just about every suspension part under there. But I only paid $12 K for it and it pulls 15,000 pounds with no problem at all. Love my ol' truck!

Congrats. Enjoy! You got a good deal considering prices of used trucks right now. I Got a 2004 3500 about 5yrs ago. Still love it. Went with an older truck specifically bc I wanted no DPF, DEF systems, etc. plus all linkage for the transmission and such are purely mechanical. Do your own maintenance. My brother works at a dodge dealership and the get $600 for an oil change. That does include the two fuel filters if that makes it better….also things such as the crankcase ventilation filter under the faux valve cover they get $1500 to replace. $120 at your local parts shop. 8 bolts and KZfaq will show you how to reset the service notice on the dash. The diesels are great as long as you maintain them and if your handy (as we know you are or highly suspect anyway, 😂 maintenance costs are greatly reduced. Enjoy. You’ll love it.

It's a nice truck and all, but I think I will stick with my '93 Club Cab 4x4 Cummins with the 5-speed. I had this truck since new and when I bought it, I figured it would be the last truck I will ever buy. I just retired, and I haven't changed my mind about that, especially with the cost of used (let alone new) trucks that would be comparable. It hasn't quite turned 200k yet, and the paint on it leaves A LOT to be desired, but with that 5.9 non-computerized 12-valve engine, I don't see any reason to change.

Start a savings account for that truck, injectors are expensive and so is a turbo, the transmissions on those are pretty decent compared to what was behind the common rail 5.9, I've put almost 300,000 on an 05 5.9 wouldn't trade it for the world even though it's expensive to maintain it

Get it TUNED! 😃 Even if it's just a simple hand held DIY tuner like a superchips, hypertech, etc. Preferably a custom tune. But any of them even on about the middle tune setting (not Max setting), you'll gain a couple miles per gallon and make it more fun to drive. The first 6 months you may not notice much fuel mileage increase (b/c you'll be playing with the additional power). But once you start driving it normally again, you'll gain the mpg and be able to feel the additional power.

I have a 2017 Prime, and a daughter shocked me by getting a 2021 when her 05 Civic died recently. Like you, she got a super nice new car for under $20K after $5500 rebate and $4500 tax credit, in a car market barely giving any rebates on anything. My 17, have 96K on and it runs like new. I consider the Prime Plus (which is the lowest trim level, still very loaded by my standards) to be a $60K car that you can get for effectively $20K. Then if you drive any reimbursable miles, it's really a free car. Put better tires on it. I recommend Michelin X-Ice3 slightly oversized, 205/65R15 99T. Amazing on that car. Unlike snow tires in the old days, they lasted 63K miles inflated to 50psi, and acted like performance tires in summer also.

With new car inventory so low, used vehicles are crazy high. That’s probably a screaming deal if you paid under $35k? I traded my 18 Tacoma in and got more than I paid for it towards a 2021 version, but I know the director of sales pretty well there. I don’t think it’s a common thing. He did say they usually have 250+ vehicles on the lot usually and are down to 80, hard time finding inventory.

So what I will tell you is this, 5th wheels with mega cabs are rough because of the short bed the come with. Garrett (Cletus McFarland) had a mega cab with a 5th wheel wedge and it would be way way to easy to smack the cab with the corner of the trailer while turning. So he got a regular cab long bed. With that said you may want to look at a nice bumper pull, as with that set up you can tow it no problem and eliminate that issue.

We will be using a sliding fifth wheel plate.

I was just going to comment that you can get sliding 5th wheels for pickups but, the bear beat me to it. Personally, I'd still prefer an 8' bed because the longer wheelbase improves the ride quality. You don't get as much bounce with a longer wheelbase.

@@MikeBrown-ii3pt does the long bed have a longer wheelbase? Seems like it should but the only listing I saw shows them both at 160 in

@@denoftools I don't own one and, don't know if anything changed between model years but, I have a friends 2018 Mega with an 8' bed in my shop right now for an oil drain and brakes. According to the equipment sticker, it has a 169.5" wheelbase.

@@jamesu That's what I said. I was a Dealer tech when they first put them in the Dodge truck in 1989. Back then they were 5.9 Cummins B series 12 valve turbo with no intercooler. The only electrical part on the whole engine was the fuel control solenoid and you could take the plunger out of that if it failed. With a completely dead battery you could remove the plunger, push start the truck and drive it home.

@@jdgimpa I agree with you but specified Dodge/Ram because someone somewhere will probably dig up a prehistoric Cummins engine without a turbo.
