Hi Phil, I got lucky. I bought a Ukulele off eBay. Coming from a guitar background, I knew the perils of this but paid my $70 AU (probably 35 quid). I ended up with a very nice little uke and loved playing it. I have since invested in a more expensive ukulele. I love them both and still play the cheap one regularly, but it was a gamble, and as I say, I got lucky. I have had cheap and nasty experiences with guitars. Nothing will make you give up quicker than a 'musical instrument', that is not musical!

Phil, thanks for actually explaining why things work & don't - a lot of videos make statements w/out explanation. I bought a used baritone uke at a local shop - and found I could get a decent , serviceable uke w/ nice features (internal tuner, plug-in for an amp) for a price I can afford. I can actually go back there and talk to human beings and get help if I need to. Very helpful, especially to a beginner.

I found this very useful. I bought a ukulele at a garage safari, chinese for £1 with a soft case. Worst case I've got a case, some strings and a bird house I reckoned. It tuned up ok but play the C on the A string and it was way sharp - same issue. I amalgamated 2 comments from this thread. The first fret looked too wide, someone suggested sawing a bit off the fretboard. Someone else said use an alan key as dummy nut that you move along until the intonation is correct. Well, first slacken off bottom 3 strings and only work with the A string. Once you have the best C, mark the position of the alan key and remove it, draw a line on the fret board at that point and cut the fret board there, make sure your cut is parallel to the frets! ( remove the strings and plastic nut first, you prise this off with a stanley knife carefully, re-glue at the new position with super glue. You can prise off the bit of fretboard youve cut at the end carefully with the stanley knife too, as its likely only to be a couple of mm. Put the outer 2 strings on first to keep even tension in case glue not quite set ('cos you have no patience like me). Now have a useable uke.

I’ve never had a ukulele, nor am I interested in playing, but I got a similar “uke” for Christmas. Looks the exact same as yours, but from a different company. Strings were floppy, and when I tuned it, it sounded far worse than yours. The bridge wasn’t close to being in the right position, and it was also made from cheap plywood with a ‘made in China’ sticker on the back. Don’t know how much it cost, but I’m glad to know I’m not cursed.

Great video I'm just a beginner on the uke myself but I have been visiting local independent guitar shops for a few years, they give great advice and when I wanted a uke as a beginner instrument they could supply decent instruments to fit all pockets. As you say there is a floor below which it is not worth wasting your money on. Likewise to pay a few pounds extra for the good advice and guidance you get from the local music shops, where the staff usually are also musicians can be a worthwhile investment.

I had a cheap uke I bought years ago and learned on it, and it was OK, but when I wanted something better, I bought an Oscar Schmidt, which was fairly expensive. Then I wanted to try a banjo-uke, so bought an inexpensive one, by Knise. It was pretty nice and I really liked the banjo sound, so after a while I swallowed hard and bought a Deering, which was really expensive. I figured you only live once. I guess if you're really going to stick to playing music, you can have a couple of decent lower priced ones to fool around with and experiment, but you should have one really fine instrument to reach your full potential. I'm going to convert my original banjo-uke to a low G so I can have one of each, low-G and high-G.

I have had good luck with Enya ukuleles. I have purchased 4 so far for myself and my granddaughters at different price points and all of them seem to perform well, in tune, with good sound, nice action and decent craftsmanship. Though they are made in China, there is a distribution/service facility in the USA (Houston, TX). They aren’t discount instruments but are competitively priced with other entry level ukes such as Kala or Cordoba

I bought a cheap uke like this, and in case it helps anyone, the intonation problem was the result of the nut placement not the bridge. I kind of suspect that that's what's happening with this uke as well. The fix isn't too difficult if you've got a small saw and/or file. Pry off the nut and saw/file down the top edge of the fret board to the proper length as measured from the bridge and frets. Then glue the nut back on with just a couple of scant drops of superglue. You don't need a lot, just enough to keep it from slipping. You can find the proper measurements on the internet. Labor-wise, you'd get the same payoff from just buying a better uke in the $50-$60 range, but it's a fun project if you like messing around with stuff like that.

Both my Kala tenor travel uke and my Ohana baratone were near unplayable new yet weren't cheap ($NZ450). I fixed both by removing the white nubone on the bridge and sanding the front edge to move the string contact point back so that the distance from nut to bridge was increased 1-2 mm. It's a long process as you do it bit by bit restringing and testing numerous times. I also filed the bottom of the nubone to lower the action. My ukes are now envied and I've been privileged to fix several others in our group including one where the contact point on some frets was out. This method could probably fix your £16 uke but might take an afternoon of work. It's not worth paying someone to do it as the tone is not spectacular.

Same as you, l aquired a cheap winz uke with the same problems, and after fixing nut and saddle,it was still a bit out, then l came accross a youtube video where the guy said "if you have an intonation problem, flatten out a paper clip and cut it to suit and place under the strings like a zero fret, I didn't use a flattened paperclip, but l used the smallest size allen key to function as a zero fret and although l was sceptical it has put it right in tune without having to move the bridge (it does work) .

Crap strings, Nut heights, sharp fret ends, sharp corners on ‘blocky’ bridges, etc …..if you buy these as ‘projects’ & are relatively competent, then you’ll invest time and twice what you paid for it and might get something acceptable. You won’t cry about making a side sound port in one, often more paint / lacquer/ varnish will add stacks more tone & resonance. You might find that someone has stuck a shim under the bridge because it was too low or uneven 🧐‼️ Buying these as ‘projects’ makes you learn about stuff, plus you get a Uke you can go to the beach with or take camping (and not cry when it gets wet, muddy, covered in sand😛).

Phil, this is SO useful. Great analysis and explanation. I have a student once who turned up with a cheap uke from my local store where all the strings were slack and as I tried to tune it the bridge broke in half. I love watching these. Thanks. I paid £60 second hand for my Barnes & Mullins uke and it is so good to play. Keeps in tune. Looks fab and plays so well. I did look at the one you have here but chose against it for more or less the reasons you mention. As for my banjolele, that may have been a purchase in error, as it is a Melody Minor. It is okay and a little battered, but will look gorgeous when I do the upgrade on her (new vellum, everything dull to shiny etc and a gloss look rather than matte) but the sound difference between that and another Barnes & Mullins (double money) is so much clearer. Ideally, I want a Dallas C or D, but that'll have to wait.

I played it for a couple of years, before I splashed out on a Concert, then a 5 string Tenor, and now a Baritone. After watching the video, I had to get out the Martin Smith, tune it up as it had been a few months since I last played it, and I am very happy to say that it was fully in tune with itself. You pay your money, and you take a chance. I wonder how different the video would be if the one you bought was in tune with itself?

You never know, you might get lucky. The poor quality control means that some of them will probably play in tune!

Note to beginners : no string instrument is sold in tune, nylon strings need a few days to stretch before they hold tune, even high quality ones. The strings on a $20-$40 ukulele aren’t gonna be any good so you’re going to want to replace them right away. I’ve seen so many videos of absolute idiots criticizing this and saying stuff that shows they have no understanding of how instruments are supposed to be sold or even how basic things like strings function. I suspect these people are absolute amateurs making Clickbait hoping to create a popular KZfaq channel but unfortunately they are spreading misinformation.

I completely agree, though as I point out, most at least have been tuned at some point to be checked. A reputable shop that had made adjustments would have tuned the instrument to pitch, even though it would need adjusting for a while until it settled. What shocked me was that this instrument appeared to NEVER have been tuned up to pitch, and it certainly isn't normal to receive an instrument with no tension in the strings (if it were a second hand instrument that would immediate make me think that the seller was tring to hide something like a lifting bridge or bowing neck). Allowing the strings to settle in will never make a poorly constructed instrument play in tune. As far as the strings not being any good, In this video I am assuming the buyer wants to play what they bought. If the manufacturer cannot put decent enough strings on it, then that again shows me they really don't care about it being playable. A set of Worth strings in the UK cost almost as much as the uke! Replace them straight away and this uke then costs around £30, and still will never play in tune due to the bridge/nut/frets not going properly placed. The reason I made this video is because I see ukes like this on Facebook posts all the time, with people asking "Is this any good?" and pre-pandemic I had students come to my house every day with unplayable instruments dropped-shipped from Amazon. There's no misinformation in this video, I understand how strings work (I've been a gigging musician for over 30 years). No amount of allowing these strings to stretch or replacing them with a known brand will fix the problems with this instrument.

@@PhilDolemanThe very important abouth this information for us ( better knowing ) is that a beginner needs a good instrument that sounds greath so they are inspired to continue playing. I allways urge parents to invest in a good instrument for the child interesting in music.
