It doesn't surprise me with these little buggers. For some reason they really do live longer than standard horses. At the yard I learned to ride at they had a slightly larger pony, and none of us knew exactly how old she was. When I started riding she was already in her late 30's, they tried to retire her but she became poorly real quick, so she was kept in very light gentle work. When she passed, the vets estimated she was upper end of her 40's, somewhere between 45 and 48 years old. It's amazing how long they can live with a good quality of life when they receive the appropriate care and attention.

What I find astounding is that the auction house that took this pony, are there no people from animal control, I’m not familiar with animal auctions, that when an abused animal comes in that they are immediately reported? Do the people who put this pony up for auction, do they have more animals? This woman did an amazing job in helping get this pony the proper medical care and she gave it a wonderful home . She is blessed and the pony was blessed. 🙏🙏

Is there a penalty, but how often is it enforced? Do we have an animal welfare act in the US? Worth looking into. I follow World Horse Welfare out of the UK. An excellent model. We do have great rescues in the US. @@ChicagoMel23

I so agree, and it's not like elder animals have any less personality. Where I work we usually get shelter kittens that we try to adopt out, but the other day we got an older cat to try and adopt out, which is a little unusual. I was expecting a more laid back, tired cat, but this big boy (his name was big boy as well) was almost as personable as Tiny, cowgirl's cat. He was so sweet, and honestly I would have taken him home if I was looking for a cat myself.

I bought a senior mini at auction. Was told it was 9 years old. Took him to vet to get his teeth floated and was told that he was probly 25-30 years old. I trimmed his long coat every spring and bought special feed him. I cared for little Koala for over 3 years,until he went down and had to have him put to sleep. He was skin and bones when I found him and he had diarrhea. I'm glad I could care for him in his last days.

In the UK all horse auctions are haunted by the RSPCA as well as horse savvy police. The RSPCA love horses like Nigel, because they justify all the money that they collect.

Dear Linda and Rose. I'm an elderly horse woman as well, living on Social Security (disability) which is somewhat difficult. Because of injuries and finances, I donated my 3 horses to a therapeutic riding school. I love the story of Nigel from his rescue through his rehab, and finally living the life he always deserved. My aunt did this too. She saved animals. A horse that was ran behind a vehicle till it couldn’t run anymore and then dragged. He lived a very good, long life, and no one could get close to him but my aunt.

This little guy's improvement in your hands is testament to your very deep empathy and caring heart! You are Nigel's HERO, and I salute you for what you have done. Thank you for all of us who wish we could do the same. A little over a year ago, I adopted a 14-year-old dog that needed a lot of dental work. It cost me $500, but I wasn't surprised. I call him Buddy. Though he is now deaf and blind, he still loves life, enjoys his daily walks, and has a good appetite. His favorite spot is the nearby park, with its abundance of interesting smells! Though I can't rescue a sick little pony, this is something I can do, and it's been very gratifying!

Nigel's cold resistance is probably a direct result of his Shetland DNA. Ponies on the Shetland Islands, the farthest northern point of the UK, had to endure some pretty tough winter weather and are known for their thick winter coats. Nigel is a delight! And a scamp!

Stories like this is what people need to please help animals like this! Animals need help just as much as people! We need more people like this out there helping animals lives. I am one of them. The world is struggling and we need to get together and help one another that’s including animals!
