Wow you found a rare one there. I was the service manager at a Cushman Dealer in the '70s and we sold them new. I remember having to do service calls hiking up the side of the mountain to get to broke down machines. I know those things inside and out so ask any questions.

Should pull the plug wire for the running cylinder and try to get the other running. Could be a fuel issue or ignition issue

Smiles for miles!! Growing up in northeast Ohio in the 60's, family friends had one of these they kept on their 100+ acres near Chippewa Lake. They'd turn me loose on their Trackster and I was gone for hours at a time. Although quite noisy they are an absolute blast!! Great find and I am sure it will serve you well!! Thanks for sharing.

There's probably a good reason those were only made for 5 yrs. The reason the plug is so white on the one cyl. is thats the cylinder doing all the work and is overheating. Then you have tracks that are falling apart and doing 🍩's with it. With parts most likely non existent its going to end up with the same fate as the hovercraft & wetbike. Well have with it while you can and be safe.🙂

I've got three of the cushman tracksters. One is a marsh model. The left cylinder on those OMC engines only fire all the time when under a load and fire intermittently at idle. The compression on the left side of yours is under minimum requirements, so it will only fire at high RPMs. Finding parts is getting extremely difficult for the engines. There are a couple of places that still have OEM parts, but I'm not sure what they have. I converted mine to four stroke. If you can find the parts to rebuild the engine, be extremely careful if you pull the flywheel. The cam can be easily damaged when replacing the flywheel if not lined up correctly, and finding another cam is almost impossible. I did rebuild my first OMC 29hp, but that was when Cushman still offered parts. That was back in 1977. You're also missing the engine silencer that connects to the air intake housing, but it really doesn't make it that much quieter. Fun machines!! Got my first one in 1977.

Everyone we had had issues with the left cylinder over time and yes they are always loud. Fun fun Machines and like you said it's gonna be super hard to find parts. We got sold ours in the early 90s cause finding Tracks were almost impossible. Maybe with the internet now it maybe easier but I doubt it

I had a 72 Evinrude snowmobile with a 400 cc opposed 2 stroke twin like the one in your video. It was an exceptionally reliable engine if you kept the revs up. It would foul plugs if idled any length of time. It also had almost no throttle response. The best way to use it was to start it and move off asap at about 3/4 throttle, going to full throttle on straights. Not a fast machine, but loads of torque - it would climb literally anything with snow on it. Probably a good thing about the slow speed though - the track was three strips of canvas coneyor belting held together by 1" wide formed steel bars riveted on with wide-head tubular rivets. I fixed a bunch of broken rivets - each one had to be expanded with a big centrepunch and hammer. Old tech, but it worked a long time, I had the machine for 15 years and it ran great when I sold it. Buyer used it a few years after that. Liked the video. Cheers. PS hearing protection is a must with these engines, as you may know!

You know what Joe.. I grew up (moved away but came back, sadly) in Southern New Jersey. As a kid we used to get a couple snowstorms a year.. and it was fun but annoying. Now at 45 I actually don't like when it snows here at all because it just causes so much mayhem on the streets, it's like people totally forget how to drive.. and we don't even get THAT MUCH snow. Watching you buy machines like this one and the yellow beast you have and snow machines and the like, it almost makes me want to just say F it and when I'm retired just move up to the great North West and live in the damn snow most of the year. That thing looks like SO much fun.. It sounds like that engine may need some work, I'm 10 minutes into the video and even being a 2 stroke, it sounds like it needs some help, let's see how it goes.. Thanks Joe for sharing these AWESOME machines!!

Joe my friend, be very careful about throwing a charge to a very cold or frozen battery, they could explode. I would suggest if you need to jump start ANY vehicle when it's freezing cold, don't go through the battery. Run a straight charge, start the vehicle and get it into the shop, then let the battery warm up and take it from there. We can't have you injured from an exploding battery, then no more videos for us!😅😂 Happy New Year to you, Jade and your "Master Mechanic" Vinny! PS., I couldn't tell if you jumped through the battery or not. If not, excuse my mistake.😊 Allan in frosty Cut Bank, Montana.

Unleaded gas was run in it. Think back 1975. I am 65 yrs old. Old skeeter 25 hp eng and drivetrane. Find a 32 ss bobcat eng. I would just put in a new eng be done with it. V twin. Honda be realy nice do 45 mph on lake lmao. When OMC brought out cushman. Thats how they got into snowmobiles. Tradewinds they brought out to. Lookup the history. Now yamaha owns OMC. Took over all the outboard eng line. We had fast boats back then. 235 hp on 17 foot glasstron. She won alot of beers. 440. 650 skimmers when. Fast back then to. Dude. You sure brought back alot of my child hood. Thank you. Hope i helped you a bit. Hit the swap meets youll find what you need if you want to keep it stock. Its not a bad eng to rebuild. Just old school. Lol no metric parts or bolts

My parents bought one off the showroom floor back in the early seventies! It would go through any type of terrain, running it through some very rocky ground In Montana, caused some rips in the tracks! But your track really isn’t that bad, considering it’s over 50 years! They did run on one cylinder when idling, which is weird! I have one with a cab, and my dad has 2, one is the marsh model!

They have cylinders that have a fairly thick chrome plating and that low compression side may have a problem with it chipping off. That could be repaired, if needed, by a cylinder plating shop. There also a service bulletin about how one side would run colder than the other due to the rotation of the crank causing one side to get more of the fuel/air charge than the other. They recommended one size hotter plug on the colder side to prevent fouling.

You found one my dad worked 45 yrs for OMC. Same eng they put in snowmobile. They where not made to tun on the new gas. Dad brougjt a few sleds and a few of them home to play with. Friends got one. Had to replace the eng. Put in a 25hp kohler omg she runs nice more power the tracks you can replace not cheap. Put some staples where track is ripped. One of the ones we used had bar cleats on tracks. As for eng if want to keep it going find a evinrude or johnson snowmobile. All parts and drive will work even the boggie wheels. They did eat up drive belts. We did get them stuck. Becarefull

Other then being two stroke it’s almost an identical opposed engine to what’s in my 1990 Cushman truckster , cool thing about Cushman and omc engines is they were basically all the same from the 1950s till the time they quit making them . I bet it wouldn’t be terribly hard to swap in a 4 stroke truckster engine and you can get basically every part for them still , just rebuilt mine this past spring

I had one of those... Bought it for $300.00. It didn't run but only took a new ignition coil and away it went. kept it for a few years then let a friend use it for deer hunting he put straight gas in it, that was the end of the motor. So I but a 20HP Vanguarde engine in it. I ended up selling it to the same guy that blew the motor and 30 years later he is still using it. fun machine. Mine hade a hydraulic cylinder under the track, that would open if the engine stalled, I was like an emergency brake. The only problem was that the machine was noise heavy, so if you went down a steep hill you had to turn around and go down backwards.

Try adding in some STP stop leak and zinc additive mixed in the motor oil. To coat the oil rings and cylinders with really good. Then heat cycle it really good two times with it filled up. To the full stash markings on the dipstick. Then re-check it the oil level again on it. If it's going to come back around then it'll do it then., Or ride it around for A while all day using it to haul and clean up.,or move more stuff around with to help out with seating those oil rings more. I just wouldn't over due it.,or overload it is all.
