I'm in a photography community over on the internet and we have the same kind of thing. The only thing is we get tight brief that we would get from clients so that we can train on that as the aim of the community is to turn us into working photographers. I'm not on the newsletter but so i don't know if you just said make me a a short film and that's it. But you could do some thing like : make a short film of [duration], [style, genre, era] about [either free topic or something specifc]. That way you get same theme but ofc treated differently by different directors.

I enjoyed hearing your critiques and comparing them to what I was feeling. Sometimes I knew there was something that didn't "feel" right, and then you explained why I had that feeling. Interesting, for sure.

that's the #1 lesson I've taken from all your videos: people will put up with some crappy video, but will NOT put up with crappy audio. kinda ironic.

Please, we need more videos like these. Perhaps this type of exercise of watching "embryonic" student works is even more important than watching masterpieces. Like a cautionary tale...
@atlanta20762 ай бұрын
I think you struck GOLD here. If you do this regularly, not only do film makers get a platform, but you can actually apply your experiences in real time. It's still baffles me how film makers ignore the importance of audio, b/c audio ultimately trumps video. People will put up with mid video quality if the audio is great - but not vice versa. Overall - I think - you told these film makers (and I found all displayed entries interesting) just what they needed to hear. I really hope this'll become a series. 🙂

Sam Mask seems Incredibly talented if that's his first short. Really strong Visual language and great great sense of where the camera should be and where it shoudn't. Loved the visual flair with the helios lens aswell eventhough i get what you mean when you say it could get gimmicky after a while.

Back in the early days of youtube, I had a cat channel disguised as a gardening channel, and I learned soooo much about film editing, entirely by accident. The low resolution made impossible matches somewhat easy, which let me express all my superhero fantasies, the cats would jump into earth orbit, it was a blast. my one weakness, I was super-camera-shy and could only use two-second-clips, it got kinda silly, so now that I'm doing sign language, I do everything in one long uncut shot, which is insane, but it's an amazing feeeling, making it through to the end~

summary: film 1: have GREAT audio and don't expect much from non-actors. film 2: even if you have good cinematography, good audio and video, develop your story to make it more interesting. film 3: have a minimal sound design to hide bad audio, shorten montages and your story if it gets to the point in less runtime, and add layers to your characters.

I'm a critic, I know, but that first one is hopefully their very first attempt and first time seeing a video camera IRL. Bad audio, bad lighting, bad composition. Frankly I wouldn't admit that this was a result of your course. Was there even basic sound design? I can't. This would be a fun series if the entries were somewhat curated. Don't mind me, I have a head ache LOL.
