I'm back after nearly a month in Peru spent doing an enormous amount of photography while hiking the Huayhuash Trek. I had many different goals, and brought many different cameras to make sure I could accomplish them. I may have tried to do too much...
This is a quick, unscripted, breakdown after a very emotional experience along a very special trail.

Recently discovered and subscribed. I feel for you man ! A few years ago, I went to Bolivia and we did a trek up to an ancient volcano. Elevation around 4000m. With a backpack filled with my Nikon D600 FF and some heavy lenses + XT1 and a few lenses as well. I have to say it was a massive struggle. The slope was quite steep and we had to stop every 50m. My heart was pounding so fast and we were constantly out of breadth. And at the time I was only 37 yrs old. That was the trigger to get rid of my FF equipement. 😂

First of all, what an awesome adventure. Bolivia is at the very top of my list for a future adventure, it looks like a diverse, beautiful country. As for gear, there is no doubt that there's a line you eventually have to draw haha. I left out some of my favorite kit from this trek because I knew safety and smarts were more important than certain shots. I also learned it's important to manage your photo goals regardless of your gear. Thanks for joining my little community, happy to have you here!

@@SamBugasI only did North Chile and South Bolivia as a combined trip. And it was definitely worth it. Bolivia is kind of harsh, raw, but unpolished… Hope you get the idea. But really worth it. South Chile is still on my list as New Zealand. Seems to be an amazingly beautiful country.

10 days no resupply? 60lb plus pack? 15,000 - 16,000 elevation? 8-10 miles per day? Sounds like a lot of bandwidth was used for survival… Photos are spectacular, as per usual for SWB content. Impressive feat for your Dad as well! I will share out to some of my hiking buddies…

It was a bodacious outing, Doug. We did grab some Oreos, toilet paper, and ramen in a town, but otherwise no resupply. The beauty of it is that it gets easier in terms of weight each day, but also harder hiking every day haha. Thanks for the kind words on the photos, and the support!!

Awesome trip . I am surprised you over extended I guess that comes down to planning . As to cameras they are tools and brand is irrelevant....as I am a lot older than you I use weight as a guide to what to take and modern brands like the sony now have very small body cameras with 61 and 33 megapixel sensors but half the size and weight of the full body size equivalent....but use same lens family......this for me has made a huge difference when out on longer trips......neither just stay with a brand because u luv it ...its a tool....especially when u earn money from it

I am far more emotional about my gear, for better or worse. It has to make me excited, feel a certain way in my hands, and have a certain experience while in use. If I went for the lightest gear, no doubt it would be Sony. I have tried Sony and didn’t enjoy the cameras, which is why I’ve ultimately landed on other brands, but of course that’s a totally personal experience. As for the trip, it was an absolute dream to say the least. I underestimated how much time and effort would go into my commercial projects, which is why it became untenable to give my all at four separate photographic ambitions. I’m very happy with what I came home with, but learned it’s important to be realistic when you have requirements and personal ambitions. Also, photography is just plain fun, so feeling a bit overextended was a good problem to have for me hahah
