True that Wayne! Really makes you appreciate how much the gear matters when you hook up to these fish. If there's a weakness, they will surely find it and put it to the sword! But everytime I bring out some serious gear, I don't hook up, so they are smart too 🍺🍺

Lol Mark. Next I might start with the heaviest combo I have. That was such an enjoyable hook up, I didn't even touch the drag, I had faith it was turned high enough and it still got me. Next time the 80lb comes out haha

@@ShroomFishing Yeah like Stewie said , that was a good fish. Make sure you use a very thick live bait hook if you go the 80lb. Not just for its strength, thinner hooks can cut right through the fishes jaw under the extreme pressure of 80 lb. And watch you don't get dragged overboard! And that's not a joke, I'm 192 cm and it happened to me on a yellowfin. Luckily it was a lever drag reel and I was able to back the drag right off in an instant. Otherwise I think I would have surfaced somewhere off the coast of Mexico. 🤣

I'm always worried about the first time I get surprised and have set the drag too heavy like downrigging a live squid but holding onto the rod with heavy drag on an overhead setup anticipating the strike when driving across a wreck lol. Yep, I never thought about them cutting through a fish's jaw that makes a lot of sense. Also, I need to beef up some of the swivels I'm using, I can just picture them exploding under the pressure. I'm glad you were able to back it off right away, I've heard stories of people fishing solo and recklessly strapping themselves up and getting pulled in

They don't last long Ian! Tricky to get them sometimes but if they hard to find, the kings usually have had a tough time locating them too so are less picky 😎

@@ShroomFishing One thing i always remember a well known charter operator who specialises in kingies in Sydney harbour always said Get the squid get the kings - nothing out fishes them .

Shroom went there Tuesday and caught no kings and went to the peek and caught a morwong inside there I chucked out a live squid and let it sit then when we pulled up it was gone no signs of fish just small fish ripping it off

Try to keep the fish of the bottom you may need stronger gear , what are you fishing for when it happeneds it should only happen with big predator fish

It's a good and a bad thing Alfred. Must be a quality fish to get you reefed. Sometimes it doesn't matter how heavy you go the kings will still get you. There's a belief that the harder you go, the harder the fish goes so that's why it comes down to luck sometimes.

Not at that location. It would probably be the best spot in the Botany Bay/Georges River system if they ever decided to open it up and build a safe platform to fish from

Yes Angela. Live yellowtail in particular, is a great bait. I usually use that when I can't get squid. Our mate in the boat across from us 7:51 was getting hit by a king then and caught a king shortly after.
