Splurged in a way on my last build. Bought the parts one after one and in the end I never added it up to the last Euro. But the rough estimate is quite a bit more than I would have spent had I just gone into a shop and bought one off the shelf. Then again I think I still got a good deal with the end result. Money no object: More italian style I think.

I already have my dream bike. It's a custom made travelling bike with a steel frame built by Robert Stolz in Zürich/Switzerland. I chose Steel because if the frame would brake somewhere in the Himalaya mountains any car mechanic or construction worker could repair/weld it. I bought it many years ago. Today Stolz' prices for the same bike are around 13'000 francs/euro. The only thing I would change is getting a Rohloff gear hub instead of a Shimano Deore XT.

I bought/built mine in the summer of 2021 when it was difficult to find a new bike of any kind. It has cost (so far) less than half of Alex’s bike. I’m way less than half the cyclist that Alex is, but I’d guess more than twice his age 😂. It’s a titanium Litespeed Cherohala all-road/endurance bike with a full Ultegra mechanical groupset, mostly FSA aluminum finishing kit, Reynolds carbon wheels with 32mm Gravel King smoothies, and Fulcrum aluminum wheels with 35mm Michelin Power Gravel tires.

Depends on the stiffness. If the added weight makes you lose less energy to warping your frame then it can be worth it. And it also depends where the added weight is. If it's on the frame it's not as bad as if it was on the wheels because that you notice every time you have to spin them up. What shocked me more were the spokes. Round spokes lol

I built my dream bike. I got a 2010 trek madone 6.9, custom painted it, installed dura ace 9100 groupset, yoeleo 60mm wheel on the front, 88mm on the rear, tubeless tanwall gp5000 tires, carbon handle bar, oil slick bar plugs, spacers, and stem cap. It weighs in at 6.8kgs, feels so nice to ride and no one out there has the same rig.

I think you nailed it when you said all that matters is that you enjoy riding it and, every time you ride it, you just want to ride it more. I've just built a TT bike from a mix of eBay parts, Marketplace bargains and a few new bits and pieces and I adore it. On its first outing in anger, it beat one bike that had a single wheel worth more than my whole build. It's not perfect and it's not meant to be - it's mine, I built it and I love it. And it's a project so will technically never be finished. Good video - and we need to see more of that vintage team car too.....

I put together my (more or less) ultimate dream build bike last year (Trek Ckeckpoint SL framesaet, GRX Di2 2X group set, Pro Discover carbon bars, Zipp carbon seat post, Selle Italia SLR Boost saddle, Garmin Rally XC pedals, Roval Terra C wheels with S works Pathfinder tires, - I have a road wheel set too with deeper Hunt wheels and 32mm Vittoria corsa pro tires) Ridden a little over 7000 Km on it and it has been BRILLIANT. Lived up to all my hopes and it feels SO good (helps I had a bike fit before getting all the parts and then building it to bike fit recommended set up). Cost a lot - but the Euro per smile ratio definitely worth it!

First real race bike was my dream build. Bought a Benotto 3000 frame, then found all Super Record components from different bike shops around the area over about 6 months. Built it slowly in my bedroom. Matched myself to the Cinelli bar and stem, not too crit, but not to deep either, then finished it with a Selle San Marco Rolls saddle, later replaced with the Hinault Turbo. Also had Super Record Pedals until the first Look PP65's arrived. Game changer! Raced it on GP4 with vittoria tubs... I was still a 3rd cat and the roads were still rubbish! I still have that bike. It still goes out, in the summer, when the weather is good. its friction levers still work on its 6 speed, 13-21 block and the 42-53 chainrings are a little more painful these days but they are easy to turn and great for a long steady ride. I am so pleased I was able to build that bike, and also to still have it and still love it. 40 years this year. Worth every penny. Whatever your dream build is, do it.

I built my dream bike this year: No22 Great Divide with the de-coupler option. Dura Ace 9200 wireless with the C36 wheels, disc brakes, PM, Darimo T1 seatpost, Darimo bars/stem and for the icing on the bike cake: Ti fenders that match the frame. Tips the scale at 17.3lbs, as the de-coupler adds only 150g! Total cost topped a few K over your build, but is my travel bike for many years to come. The hardshell travel case is small enough to be regular checked luggage too.

Great video, I love Alex’s enthusiasm and passion for his riding and his builds, but it does raise a question, do any of us have a dream bike build or do we dream of owning an off the shelf bike which already has the groupset we want? I know we all tweak our bikes, changing wheels, tyres, saddles and cassettes but these are generally based around a bike we want that just needs a bit of tinkering. Other than building frankenbikes out of what we have available does anyone dream of a building a superbike from scratch?

@gcntech Nice Build and thanks for the Video - Great to see how far Ti manufacturing has gotten with 3D printing. Maybe we see 3D printed Aero Ti Bikes soon? Would that even make sense? And one more important question: Which glasses are you wearing in this video @Alex? They look very nice!

I built a dream all Italian racing bike quite a few years ago. Only recently did I tell my parents how much I spent to build it (could have bought a nice car). Thing is, I am still riding it all these years later. So on a value basis, keeping me somewhat fit and happy. Paid for itself many years ago.

I splurged for a custom steel Battaglin Portofino G with the same gruppo, Deda finishing kit, Garmin power pedals, and with Campy Levante wheels (cheaper than Boras, picked because they can take up to 40mm tyres). The total build is a fair amount cheaper than this, mainly because it’s steel, not titanium, but it’s still so expensive that I had to get insurance. Surprisingly, it’s lighter than your build at 7.5kg, probably because I’m small and light (172cm/61.2kg) and the bike is optimized for my size.

I built my dream bike, a Ti/Carbon Colnago CT2, wih Record, Campag Bullets (work better with the rim brakes). Whole thing for less than £2.5k. Frame and a lot of the parts were NOS, some bits were eBayed. Not sure I'd get a more satisfactory bike for another £15k. I might upgrade to an 11 Spd mechanical Record groupset, but won;t change anything else Oh, and it's 8.3Kg, 19 years old and still looks and rides great

To achieve their own the bikes I own I have built and and spec’d myself to what was both affordable and practical- and they bring a smile and grin every time I go out on them - if the mega cash and splurge makes you happy then so be it - I do agree everyone ( cycling enthusiasts) should at least build a bike for themselves and tailor it to themselves ( making it a 1 of 1 ) bespoke to them - they will totally appreciate and enjoy the sport/hobby more - #keep calm and build bikes😊

As someone that has rebuilt bikes versus owning stock. I definitely feel more connected to bikes that I personally stripped down/bought frameset only amd build it up. There's something special when you pick and install all the parts.

I'm not sure if your hesitation around the price is a good or bad thing...if it were a car it would be a bargain, but then at the same time remembering it's just a bike is what keeps cyclists grounded and prevents bike manufacturers from bending us over the marketing/financing barrel like the car industry

This bike's price is soul crushing. Thos bike's beauty is eye watering. I've built a few "grail" bikes over the years, but they were all BMX bikes, and all built over the course of weeks, or months. Some over years, as I upgraded parts. Of all the wishes for the world, ending war, world hunger, etc. I would wish that each and every person would build thir personal grail bike for themselves. It can be done, if you adopt a long term approch, nad realize its a long term build. Itll make you the happiest youve been as an adult, since you got that first shiny bike under the tree at Christmas, or for your birthday ❤️ It just may solve a few world problems, along the way, too.

I built something close to a dream bike (extremely modest compared to this one, but it's bought with real money). It's an old £400 ish mtb. Now tailored for carrying me and bikepacking equipment, it's close to £2000 total and has been on several adventures :) If i didn't have to pay for the components, I'd go for a frame with internal routing, stronger brakes, dynamo hub, maybe even a Pinion gearbox or Rohloff hub.
