Great budget build there Matt, it’s amazing what you can put together with a little time and patience. Nice to see the 3770 still holding on in there. I’m a massive fan of the later Haswell Xeon’s they offer great performance for penny’s 😎🙏🏼

I used to add a cheap 120mm molex powered fan to the front of these cases….with the right screws it will easily mount to the front. Adding double sided sticky foam helped to reduce fan vibration too. It’s not necessary but it always benefited temp wise. Great video!

Do you mean between the drive cage and the front of the case on the inside? Or do you mean actually on the outside of the case on the front? Because I was trying to work out if there would be a way to somehow get a 120mm fan between the cage and the front but it kind of seems like there is metal in the way preventing this 11:42 But i'd be really keen to know if you managed this because I still need the drive cage.

My old PC is similar but I didn't upgrade much. HP 3500 Pro Pre-built - i5 3470 12 GB RAM (upgraded to 16GB for dual channel). Added in a MSI GTX 1050 ti (low profile). Played Fortnite, Doom 4, Doom Eternal, CSGO, Valorant & some slightly older Wolfenstein games quite well on it. Have upgraded to a much nicer modern pre-built since then so that HP system is basically a backup for the time being. Re-installed Windows 10 & it's super snappy now. Thanks for sharing. :)

These dell cases look so much nicer if you do a good job cleaning everything, taping off the top black front end (all the front IO/usb/etc), rectangular dell logo section of the front, and finishing it up with a cheap white spray paint job. The i7 ivy bridge 3770 is still an acceptable piece of hardware. Using 2 sided tape to mount a front pulling fan can improve airflow quite a bit. Well done. 🙂

I swaped out the rx 560 to rx 6600 mining card(160usd) and motherboard to z77pd3(35usd) 2 months ago. I did overclock the xeon by Bclk option(it match i7 3770k now). Every thing working great as long as i crank up all the setting to ultra, because this Ivy bridge cpu will not gain any fps if i lower the setting. Great video, keep it up.

Did the same thing but with a lenovo e73 mt back in janurary 2021 right before prices really started to get bad. got an rx 470, xeon e3 1230 v3, 240gb ssd and a 1tb hdd, and 16 gigs of ddr3 1600mhz along with a 450w psu. Since then upgraded to a gtx 1070, added a 2tb seagate hdd, and a xeon e3 1271 v3 (basically an i7 4790 without intergrated graphics) and this thing SMASHES through the games i play now at high settings. I love seeing dell optiplex/hp/lenovo budget builds like this and imo if you are looking to build something similar haswell is the way to go. Great video!

Very nice! It makes me feel better about sticking with my i7 3770, bought in 2013, after having children. I finally upgraded my GPU to the 580 in 2020, which in hindsight I wish I had waited longer for prices to have dropped. Mine started off with 16GB DDR3, which I’m looking to expand to 32GB. Happy to hear such a system would remain viable.

I did the almost same build. I paid 200$ for an Optiplex 9020 with an I7 4790s. Got mine with 16g mem in the deal. Put in a 650 EGA PS and an RX560 4GGPU. A Plextor 500g SSD. Cost me 200 cause all the parts I added I had already owned and used for long enough for them to have paid for themselves. I am happy with it :)

Nice build, I had a similar optiplex a long time ago, but on that one I had to buy a 24 to 8-pin adapter because the motherboard didn't use 24-pin. You could get an usb 3.0 header extension with an angled connector so u could use the front usb, or get an usb 3.0 pci-e card with an internal header. And try to use angles satacables aswell. There should be a trick/mod to add at least on 3.5 drive in the front one way or another. These Optiplex cases are pretty neat I think.

Ironically I did a $200-ish Optiplex build just recently as well but a little differently - I started with a 9020 with an i7-4790, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB hard drive for $105. Then I was able to get an EVGA GTX 1060 6GB with a dual SATA to 8-pin (so I can still use the stock PSU) for $85. All that was left was a cheapo 120GB boot SSD for $17 and I was off to the races for just over $200. It's been a great (and surprisingly quiet) system.

I would have added a 120mm fan to the front of the system for better air intake You removed the cage anyway so there's plenty of room for the fan that will probably decrease the gpu temps 80°C is quite a lot for a gpu in my opinion Anyway, pretty good video, I enjoyed watching it😊

After seeing so many of your videos using the Dell Optiplex, I've ended up buying both the MT and DT/Slim build and even though they were both $50 each. MT was able to upgrade power supply, max out memory, install SSD and 1TB hard drive. But still have some room for upgrades like was thinking about swapping out the i5-2500 quad core for i7 2600 and only graphics card to hold me over was GTX 1050 Ti. But for DT/Slim Build even though I was suck with power supply, i5-2500. Besides 2tb, SSD, and 16GB of memory. I gave the RX 550 low profile card a try and it work find but did prove to be somewhat weaker on a few titles. Hoping to give one of those ones with i7 a try if I can upgrade cpu. Both ended up being $200 to $300. But overall glad to have something to hold me over until I can get something better.

Nice job. Really no criticisms. I especially like the 8GB video card you got for real cheap. Who cares if it tops out the processor just a bit if you don't lock your frames. I went with a Zotac RTX 2060 for my Optiplex 9020 build. Mainly, that's because it was on hand wanting to do something, and it also fits without removing the drive cage. Case swap for mine? Nahh. An Optiplex looks good already if you ask me. It does gaming without looking like it should be able to. ;)

Got me n 8gb rx580 last month "might not work" for £42 from eBay. Ran it in my 4690k, 16gb, 500gb ssd system ever since flawless. Got that system from a dude upgrading when 6th gen came out I'm sure, £120ish from memory. So quite a while ago. Sure got my money's worth lol. Hooking it up to the bedroom TV with the rrod 360's controllers, and job will be a good un 😁

cant go wrong at all with these optiplexes ... they all come from business and schools where they were just lab computers, or web browsers... most at minimum will range from i5-3540s-to-i7 4770's (non k)... 8gbs of ram... alot of them will also most likely have quadros k420-620 or firerpos ... the reason for the video cards is because of the DP ports 2 or 4 and run off the pci-e bus power since most schools or business want dual-display monitors...thats why alot of them are quadros and not standard video cards. these intel boards seem to take any kind of mis matched ddr3 memory... the gui bios is a nice feature and they can all ipv4-pxE boot also...they are good standard Admin machines that are easy to deploy mirroring and or deployment pxE servers for mass networks....these are much easier to setup and troubleshoot then any other pc when you got to admin 400+ machines
