I did that when I was a kid. One cereal box (reenforced with balsa wood) with a hole cut, and six rubber bands stretched to different lengths. Didn't stay in tune for more than about 30 seconds but it worked.

Surprisingly my favorite guitar build to date. I didn't expect that. But a lot of that can be attributed to the demo. By far your best guitar demo. The only one I ever found myself replaying to hear again. That was really good. Love the percussive quality to the playing.

For the fret markers you could have used .22 long or .22 short shell casings as the spent casings are quite sharp at the edges and drive into wood nicely

IIRC they harden most shovels. If I was going to do this, I'd heat cycle it a few times to soften the steel. (MAP or propane torch and get it red hot then let it slowly cool.) It may affect the sound so plan out were you going to drill and focus the heat.
