I use to work in beekeeping and rescuing and yes we use that cyclone thing to capture a hive. We don’t however weaponize them. The only time we use the succ is when the hive is located in a wall and we can tare out the wall to do a normal cut out and a normal trap out won’t work because it takes about a few weeks. Honestly I would just keep them in the jar and use it like a grenade.

Bees, for the most part, are pretty dang chill unless they think you are a threat to the hive. One bee will pretty much only sting when it's about to die anyways, since they only get one sting and then die. Heck, bee swarms are insanely docile as long as you don't start crushing them, because swarms do not have a hive yet since swarms form to find a new home for a hive. But you touch their hive? Bees gonna fuck you up, the little kamikaze fuzzbutts. Wasps on the other hand? Temperamental, territorial, and extremely ready to fuck your day up because they can sting endlessly until you get the fuck away from their area.

Venturi effect to suck bees out of a jar doesn't work so well if one doesn't also let air into the jar. Otherwise the jar just goes to steady state low pressure with no flow. Bringing air into the bottom of a jar would introduce airflow from the bottom to the top. If the air flows in at an angle to the side, then it's likly to effect the bees the most as the bees will tend to want to stay closest to the side walls.

Another option would be to refrigerate the jars once wasps are trapped. Its safe to then relocate them in a chilled carry box. Simply open the jar in the sun, and eventually they will heat up and reanimate some time later. This is assuming it works the same way as for flys.

That device may actually have a market for entomologists. I can't say for sure but researchers often need a safe way to collect lots of insects when working with them. Also, probably late to tell you this but if you put insects in the freezer for about a minute, maybe two, they become lethargic and easy to work with until they warm up again.

@ThatRPGuywithtoomanyOCs
@ThatRPGuywithtoomanyOCs 7 ай бұрын
It really depends on the suit and how well sealed it is for a lot of things. The amount of time exposed also plays a role, as given enough time they will find a crevice you left open or a thin spot to sting through. The canvas will stop a sting from hitting you 999/1000 times, but given enough time you'll roll a bad luck moment. But that's for bees, not wasps. The suit will still help against wasps, but depending on stinger length and sharpness they can sometimes punch through it.

Yellow jackets are a type of hornet, also known as the angry arsehole or barmy bastard... I fully concur and endorse Dan's release method against a hard and preferably an actively flaming source. Many, many years ago, I once designed a butane powered "Puff gun" wherein a short burst of butane from a bell shaped nozzle would create a millisecond duration fireball a couple feet in diameter that effectively removed the wings from the aerial menace whereupon simpler methods were able to gather them up more effectively. A fairly large nearby population of garden spiders was treated to a multi day feast...

1:05 Ahhh, You could have use a little more time explaining how a cyclone filter works, it is sooooo coooollllll. For particles of a given size and mass you need a given "air speed" for the particle to be suspended in the air, but since the air coming in with a high speed along the side og the cyclone, and is leaving with a 90 degree angle the "air speed" must base 0 (or close to 0) at some point in the cyclone, and as the air speed drops the particles drops out of the air stream, and that point in the stream you put in a container to collect all the particles and now you have a filter that do not get clogged. Honestly this is genies, and you can find cool CFD simulations and videos of this... Please do.😃

I have a distinct memory of when I was in Boy Scouts and we were hiking on the Appalachian Trail and had a section of trail with a stump that had a massive yellow jacket nest under it. Since it was on a mountain trail, there was no real safe way to go around it and the yellow jackets were very active. We basically just had to go in pairs as slowly as possible to not upset them then continue a good hundred feet or more to be out of the area. The adults went at the end since that’s when the yellow jackets would likely be the most angry and the only person who got stung was my dad who went at the very end and was practically running up the trail and getting stung until he got almost to where everybody else was. I’d say they hit him a good 5-10 times in a few seconds

I had a colony of those in my front garden a bunchnof years ago. I started my investigation by removing the shrub in the middle of the garden. The nest seemed to be centered on the root mass. Since the bees were aggressive I did not want to dig out the shrub manually. I managed to get a rope around the shrub, which I attached to my car. Shrub gone. Bees really really mad. That evening I discovered with some judicious exploration with a shovel that the nest was more than 1 cubic metre. I called an exterminator.

Neat toys, but it's not actually possible to relocate a wasp nest by moving the wasps. You can kill them by starvation, sure, but if you want to actually keep the wasps alive, you have to dig out the nest, with the queen included, and place the nest elsewhere. Adult yellow jackets (and most wasps) can't digest they food that they forage. They feed it to the larvae, who kinda "pay" for the food by feeding the adults some digested food. So relocating a wasp without also moving the larvae generally means they're going to starve to death over the next week or so. More humane to just exterminate them quickly. Check out the Hornet King, who is an exterminator for a living but also teaches a lot about their lifecycles and even saves some nests when he can, especially for native wasp and bee colonies. He can't save them all, but the non-invasives he sometimes keeps alive for the rest of the season. The ones he can't save he feeds to his chickens and emus.

Didn't you know? November is Bee Yeeting season. Everyone builds bee guns this time of year, it's a totally tradional and normal thing to be doing.

I grew up in a kids home, and everyone was always coming in my room. So, I got a jar with a lid, and I'd go catch a bee or a wasp in a bush, and I'd take it inside, turn it over on the carpet, and once I could trap a leg I would tie a thread loop around it, and then let a couple of feet out, then cinch the end in the notch on the spool, and put it in the middle of my doorway. If people walked in without knocking, my circling flying patrol had a good chance of latching on and giving me a good laugh...
