This revolver blew my mind, and so did Mel Science. Check out their science kits at melscience.com/sBI_/ , and use the promo code Plasma50 to save 50% like a king.
Electrolytic capacitors blow up when they are pushed too hard, and because of this, can also be used as a propellant. Purely for innovation and engineering, I built a working capacitor revolver and tested its capabilities. Check out the new merch here: crowdmade.com/collections/pla...
Thank you to Justin Banks for assisting with the idea as well!

Have you looked into using magnets as a shear pin for air cannons? If the magnet holds back the projectile while the firing valve opens and breech pressure builds to the magnets holding strength before the projectile starts to move you get far greater velocities. Ps, it also works for a log splitter.

Watch out, the microswitch you use as a trigger is not suitable for the high current that flows. Eventually the contacts will weld together and cause an unexpected firing when turning the barrel to the next shot. As others commented, a better design would be to use a high voltage / high capacitance capacitor charged through a step-up regulator as energy source and to use a semiconductor switch (like a MOSFET, which can easily carry a kiloAmpere for short time) to trigger the shot. Then you only need to control the gate voltage through your trigger. Another benefit is that you can make the high current path as compact as possible, thus minimizing inductance from cabling and you can add debouncing to the trigger signal as a mechanical switch has the tendency to oscillate when closed causing intermittent contact in the first milliseconds.

Have you tried using smaller capacitors? I discovered accidentally that some small electrolytic capacitors shoot their casing out very fast. I was desoldering some componets with a blowtorch and one capacitor flew so fast it left a mark on the ceiling. I have only tried exploding them by heating them externally but it should work with electricity as well. It seems that the bigger capacitors just burst at the top with a relatively low pressure but the small ones are able to hold so much pressure that the case pops out of the rubber base and shoots away. Using them would simplify the design and make it more powerful and possibly more compact

I thought up of a similar idea the past year where you have a electro thermal-chemical gun using a poisoned high explosive (essentially a high explosive with heavy non-explosive additives, making a product that can be heated, burned, melted and molded into a casing surrounding a projectile but not be triggered until a very strong electric pulse discharges into a plasma cartridge and releases a lot of plasma/ultraviolet radiation into the propellant case. This helps the problem with caseless ammunition by using propellant that can’t explode chemically unless subjected to pulses of plasma or radiation, which makes combustion of it more efficient as well. Also to help would be to take the waste heat from the propellant to run a stirling cycle which taps into the heat from the breechblock to recharge the battery used in the weapon. Which would make the system capable of outperforming conventional guns while being inherently safer in being electric and easier to manufacture.

@@xxxm981 Also, TNT would be too dangerous. Smokeless powders and gunpowder in general belong to the family of low explosives, where their detonation velocity and reduced brisance prevent the barrel from shattering, which would be deadly and unsafe to the user. High explosives are otherwise completely unused for those exact reasons. The way I had in mind to approach the problem would be to take a high explosive and weaken it to a point where it’s still more energy dense than double or triple base powders but weakened enough to prevent the brisance and detonation velocity from exceeding the pressures that normal barrels are capable of withstanding, thereby increasing muzzle velocity but also to make the propellant so difficult to detonate only ETC technology would be capable of igniting it, period, to a point where the casings can be 3D printed and injection molded into forms that can alter muzzle velocity and projectile size while keeping the case size the same for all calibers.

I had a similar idea. Sparkplug rifle. It uses a sparkplug instead of a bolt and caseless ammunition. It can be made with basic materials. The chamber is almost completely sealed due to no ejection port or opening bore, allowing for maximum compression. To fire: moving the lever action racks a round and also, using a set of gears and a clutch, spins a small generator on the side. It spins like one of those rev-and-go cars, where it keeps spinning after the lever has been returned to starting position. When the trigger is pressed, it closes a switch to the capacitor, and the sparkplug in the chamber fires off, igniting the primer and sending the bullet down the barrel. If ammo is out and youre cornered, you can overcharge the cap for a pseudo grenade
@harms123
@harms123 Ай бұрын
You don't get consistent firing with a quick low energy spark. You could use a semi cw high voltage source (Which probably wouldn't be great since both black powder and gunpowder leaves a bit of sot which would short the electrodes that ignite the primer). The other option is to use a heating wire. Either way, It sounds like a cool project and i wish you the best of luck if you decide to create it :)

@@kennydoggins1712 This entire video revolves around getting the guts of the capacitor to get hot enough to vaporize the liquid inside of them. That liquid is salt water. Its always salt water of some variety because that's what an electrolyte is, saltwater. There is no need to use capacitors. Any sealed metal can (the shell of the caps) with liquid inside of it (electrolytes), will explode with heat applied. This video and every video that I've ever seen on this channel are disingenuous bullshit. This gun in this video is *NOT* electrically powered, its electrically triggered. Its a steam powered projectile....something that's been around for like 200 years or more. Just like his "Star in a Jar" video - a design he ripped off as original work, which has been around since the 50's and was invented by the inventor of Television. Or his ion thruster idea, also ripped off from the 50s or 60s and fully developed already. Theres nothing inherently wrong with redoing old inventions, but he doesn't credit the inventors or the history. You need quite a bit of current as well to blow up caps - so the velocity will go up with the voltage, but once the voltage get too high, the velocity will go down again due to lack of current capacity. So it will be a certain voltage that gives optimum result. Those high voltage sources that power tesla coils and stuff will not work, since their current output is only like a few milliamps. But, the more input power you have, the higher the optimum voltage will be. The voltage rating on the capacitor also matters - which will probably need to be exceeded by at least 2-3 times (lower voltage capacitors will probably work better with less voltage and more current - and higher voltage ones with higher voltage, less current). They can also be blown up by feeding them with the wrong polarity - in that case, quite low voltage (just about 5-10 V is often enough) and high current, probably gives the best result.
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel Жыл бұрын
Thanks Nigel, yeah the voltage definitely has an impact, but i'm worried that boost converters would not provide enough steady current to explode the caps. However, 20 amps for half a second should not be too hard to manage.... The high voltage supplies from the tesla coils indeed may lack enough current to really boil the electrolyte inside the capacitor. I haven't tried it, admittedly though.

Super cool! To boost the voltage, maybe use an inductor with one side to + and the other side with a a mosfet to ground. Let ~10 amps build up in the inductor, then disconnect the mosfet. Voltage should spike very high, depending on how large your inductor is, and how small your cap is.

Hey this makes me think of two projects for you. Both of them by the same inventor, Edwin Grey. Edwin invented a motor that used high voltage capacitive discharge to make the coils impulse and rotate. The motor coil with its nominal impedance looks as a very low impedance compared to a high voltage capacitor so the capacitor instantly dumps and you get an intense magnetic pulse. But he started by pulsing magnets this way and making them jump with great energy when the capacitor discharges. You should put that into your gun. And yes that's plasma related because it uses a spark gap to switch the dump cycle when the capacitor voltage reaches High Enough during charging. The second project is the motor itself.

That's what is shocking. Off camera, I did test reverse polarity overvoltage. Honestly, it reduced velocity and drastically slowed down the reliability of the explosion.

@sealpiercing8476
@sealpiercing8476 Жыл бұрын
Hmm. I think the performance ceiling of this architecture is actually pretty high. It's basically an electrothermal propelled "launcher". As long as you have enough electrical energy delivered within the relevant few hundred microseconds, and the breech and barrel can take the pressure, and the seals don't blow out, etc etc, the molecular weight of the actual propellant is low (mostly water), so the achievable velocity should be pretty high. The capacitor casing should even help with the sealing. If you go to the high end you need basically all the features of a conventional propellant "launcher" though. Don't blow up anything in your face.

Great Job figuring things out..I remember using a battery and a solenoid switch to fire a semi auto just as fast as a auto rifle...Would like to make a coil or Rail gun with real POWER...Have any ideas? Thanks & keep up the great work.. P/S...You could also make it fire with a 1`.5 volt battery with a small high voltage inverter transformer & maybe a dc to dc converter... be great to make one that would shoot maybe bb's or pellets..A Poor Mans Ray Gun are fun also, & POWERFUL..Just need an old microwave oven and take the magnetron & Capacitor out & I think it also needs 1 more cap. and a diode...You can find it for free on Internet Archives...More Powerful than any Burning Laser... Thanks again...

If you use a voltage multiplier circuit you can increase the voltage from 60 to possibly closer to the 90 volt mark. Depending upon the amperage of the battery and the amps needed to overload the capacitor.

We built something similar 10 years ago. We converted a soldering gun into an electrolytic gun. We simply let the electrolytic capacitor explode at the mains voltage, which in our country is 230 volts. The circuit breaker trips with every shot. And it didn't have much firing power.

We did this in the late 60s or early 70s. Back then caps didn't have the little X engraved in the end so the entire case would shoot off like a bullet. We converted a cap gun and used batteries. They were pretty dangerous though. Years later in the early 90s I was working on a nurse call system at a nursing home.. It had a bad filter cap on the power supply and I grabbed the wrong voltage cap. :(. When i powered it up that sucker popped big time. Filled a room about 10 X 15 with so much smoke you couldn't see. The case of the cap hit a secretary in the thigh and gave her a huge black and blue welt. Wasn't one of my best days :)

- The Terminal. The Piercer Revolver is railgun-revolver hybrid that uses electric pulses to fire microscopic metal shards at high speeds. The revolver cylinder is loaded with self-recharging batteries instead of conventional bullet cartridges, and the muzzle is a tall, glowing rectangular opening rather than a projectile-sized hole. Located above the grip is an additional battery powering the weapon's on-board display, which indicates the charge state of its alternate fire. The cylinder's chambers and display glow light blue by default, though the color will change to reflect the player's variant palette customization.

You could use a DC-DC converter to ramp up the voltage too, or use the mains power with a ballast sending 120V ac (or 240V) directly to the capacitor. I once connected a bad 100uF 50V capacitor to 100V 50Hz on a DIY psu that also delivers 115V and 230V ac up to +1000W. The bang was as loud as a magnum gun shot. Electronics are fun as hell. Been into that since 1998 and work as an electrician.😄

You need to make the capacitor and bullet into one shell. The shell just needs a contact for the capacitor to stick out of the bottom. With a toggle switch/trigger, it'll work. Also this way you can use the appropriate barrel for the round

Considering you're only getting an explosion from vaporizing the liquid in the cap it makes sense that the higher the voltage the better it works, you need all the heat you can get to vaporize as much of that liquid as possible in that instant
