I Built an ORBITAL JETPACK to Achieve Stable Orbit in the Asteroid Cluster!

Күн бұрын

Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I want to try to test out the orbital mechanics of the asteroid cluster! At the center of the asteroid field is a dense sphere with a gravitational pull all the way around it, unlike the planets that only have gravity on the "top" of their flat surface. Can I build a jet pack that can achieve a stable orbit around the sphere?

About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

You also generally want to thrust while you're on the opposite side of the part of the orbit you want to change, as he realized around 13:00. @@Alfred-Neuman Well, he did figure it out on his own here though, so obviously he has the ability to understand it to some extent. I think he would have a lot of fun trying more complicated orbital things in this game, because it removes a lot of the complexity with the management of the rocket itself. It pretty much just leaves the pure orbital mechanics, which seems like the ideal scenario to learn from.

Hey, small tip, when you burn toward a planet while in an orbit, also called radial in, you aren’t adding or subtracting any velocity. Just changing the length out orbit one one side, abt 90* form where you are burning, what you want do is burn Retrograde, or against your own velocity. This will cancel your speed, but only take effect on the opposite side of the planet. So when you have a high point in your orbit, burn retrograde on TV opposite side of the planet. Edit: I made this comment before scrape realized this. This still stands though

@Pystro
@Pystro 9 ай бұрын
I don't think Scrapman would be someone to do that. First, you'd need that system that keeps your front pointed forwards (speed sensors perpendicular to the axis of travel). And a system that keeps the belly (or the left side) towards the asteroid. (If you are using distance sensors, you'd run into the problem that before you've established the perfect orbit, the distance changes. You could probably also do it by only rotating the front around one axis, ...I think.) Once you've done all that, the hard part starts. Your system can use a distance sensor pointing down to determine if its orbit is too large or too small. It has to do the acceleration when the orbit is too close and deceleration when it's too far. But as Scrapman mentioned, the inputs have to be done with a 180° delay. Achieving that would be suuuper hard. Maybe you can put a wheel/disk on your craft that stays aligned to the skybox, and then you could "write" instructions onto the wheel on one side of your craft and "read" them on the other side. And that's just the system to circularize an orbit if it already has the overall size that you want. If you want the system to gradually shrink down the orbit (so that you can avoid crashing into the surface), it gets even more complicated. I don't think Scrapman would be someone who has fun figuring all that logic block stuff out.

using real world techniques to orbit that asteroid is crazy. you have to increase or decrease speed at the apoapsis/periapsis to create a stable orbit. didn't know trailmakers would ever have that feature!

To fix the tilt of your orbit you can turn 90 degrees, so your character is on its back and thrust up and down to adjust the tilt

Would be really cool if you could toggle on and off quantum rudders. Would also enable some cool maneuvers in combat if you could.

what if you attach yourself to the asteroid and try move it and see if you can build a spaceship with an asteroid and maybe battle with it love your videos

Hello Scrapman, I would like to suggest a battle but instead of spaceships you could battle with rovers on any planet. (Maybe Doon is reccomended) using Lasers, EMPs, and/or Shields.

Self orbiting vehicles are ansolutky possible if you notice that your speed and the strenght of the gravitationel pull are linked together as here it was shown that you need to go 107 kph at 0.98 G ; and 111 at 0.97 G , and that the G- force is affected by distance then you can easily use distance sensors to make a small changes to your velocity and a diferent sensor system to turn yourself around the 'planet'.

This would be a funny multiplayer battle, only being able to use a single mini truster and turn off auto-aim.

To count as a planet it needs to be round and the roundner the more weight means more gravity

it's so funny to hear you talk about how movement in zero-g works n then seeming ignore your own advice when tryna get the hang of orbital mechanics lol

One thing I’ve empirically learned from KSP is that when you accelerate (positive and negative) your velocity you affect the complete opposite section of your orbit significantly more. Not sure how the orbit works here.

101 orbital mechanics: apoapsis: The furthest point from the planet in your orbit periapsis: The closest point from the planet in your orbit When applying thrust, you affect the opposite side of the orbit. For example, when you feel like you're too far from the planet in your orbit(at the apoapsis), the best way to fix it would be to wait until you're on the opposite side(at the periapsis) and start burning retrograde. Careful, the apoapsis will certainly lower a lot faster than you think, meaning your orbit may now lead to a collision course with the surface if you over did it. In this case your periapsis would technically be below the surface.
