I BUILT MY OWN SUPERCUB

Ive been flying my cub for a year now and over 100hrs. I finally went through my 10,000 photos and videos and scrapped together a video of some highlights of my build along with some additional flying content. This build was so much fun. I was probably the most broke Ive ever been in my entire adult life but somehow I managed to stay connected and motivated to build this in just over a year. I began with nothing but a bent fuselage. I straightened it in a jig and it was all downhill from there. I sold my champ to fund this project for only 20k :( but it gave me the edge I needed to purchase the major components and hardware necessary to build this correctly. I built most all the metal parts on my own, Either in jigs, out of scrap, or traded labor for engine etc. I am lucky to be right in the heart of the best aviation community in the world and had a lot of great people donate odds and ends. That's about it really. She's a great bird and is such a blast to fly. At 1109lbs on 35s and 150hp.

What an excellent flying video. I was raised in Alaska and worked for a company installing power generation to the villages. A lot of riding in airplanes. Built an RV6a and flew it back up to Mt Denali. Unfortunately sold it due to medical. I do want to tackle a super cub kit. What kit is this?

I want one in the same paint scheme but have to choose the colors of the struts and the airframe and at that cost it’s better than paying over $30 plus for a 1977 Model

Hey my names Donald I’m 21 from Alaska myself, essentially dreaming to do what you’ve just done and enjoy my own bush plane to the fullest, understandably this seems like a complex process that I’m more than willing to dive into headfirst but I’ve not the slightest inkling on where to start what metals to use, how to acquire jig. More questions than I could flood any one human with but I’d love to get in contact with you and glean some wisdom from your experience in doing this.

Great video. I have about 27K into my Bearhawk Patrol not quite ready to fly. I bought a 1500 hour O-320 in 1983 for 1200 hundred bucks. It was pickled a long time. Yep I'm old. Would you happen to know my friend Kyle Forsgren from Wasilla? (Piper Pacer) I lost track of him since I retired in 2014. I miss my Anchorage trips. Next time I get there it will be in my Patrol.

did you finish it yet? I stopped when I found how much i was going to have to spend for the material to stiffen the spars, sheesh. The ribs have been sitting in the shop for two years now. I built my own brake to make the spars too, didn't work out too well.

The funny thing with cubs is originaly the J3 was designed to be as cheap as possible, but now a new XCub will set you back over US$300,000 and it's isnane. Still, at least they're cheaper than helicopters 🤷‍♂️

If you don't mind my asking, how did you build the Cub, time wise? Weekends, a few hours each day and more on weekends? The fact it took just over a year to finish, you put some time into it during that period. The Cub looks awesome!
