I grew up in the 80s and I had my Dad put our old tent up when I was about 10. 80s tents were definitely basic in design compared to nowadays. It was literally the old triangle shape. There was no "porch" area, zip up and you're in the main part, no bug protection. I had a fly get into it within 1 hour of it being erected and I was like "NOPE! Not happening!!", my poor Dad did all that work for nothing. I was such a spoilt child lol!

the house i grew up in isnt super big and when i was a kid and we would have guests over in the summertime my dad would put up a couple of tents in the backyard and all the kids would be put up in the tents while the adults all got to sleep in our beds or the living room couch lol it was always a good time

I don’t have a garden but weirdly had exactly the same thought and made an indoor sheet tent instead! So much fun!

That was brilliant, loved every minute of it. Well done! My son has done the backyard camping before. When he was maybe 15 he slept in a bivouac (essentially a sheet acting as a cover using a cord to make tent shaped). Open at both ends! I couldn't do that, we have snakes around! I did open camping as a teen but that was in NZ where there are NO snakes and with other teens. I do love camping in a tent though, even now (I am at least your Mums age!). You did well, well done and hope you do venture out further when you can.
