My motto is to have something and not need it than to need something and not have it. Your dedication, compassion, and love for what you do truly shows through your knowledge, wisdom, and spirit while helping others directly and indirectly. I've watched about 20 of your videos in the last week so that I could be prepared for my first ever hike on the AT. Thank you for all you do and especially for the lives you have changed in Africa, US, and around the world.

This summer I am headed out to Philmont Scout Ranch, in New Mexico, to do a 32-miler in the southern Rockies with 4 of my fellow scouts from my troop, and 3 of my scoutmasters. Me and one of the scoutmasters (my dad) are the only two from our troop, who are going, who have done a trip out west like this before. That means I’m leading it. We’ll be on the trail for a WEEK, and given none of the other scouts have ever done such a trip before, AND given we’ll be on the trail just a week before monsoon season OFFICIALLY starts, I’m expecting the weather to be crappy, and our teamwork to be crappier. Anyway, hope you have fun!

I absolutely love hiking! There's something so peaceful about being out in nature, surrounded by beautiful scenery and fresh air. I find it's the perfect way to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and just enjoy the present moment. Whether it's a short day hike or a multi-day backpacking trip, there's always something new to discover on the trails. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a little adventure and a lot of serenity. Happy hiking everyone!

Fantastic video, Dan...as usual! It's awesome that you bring new hikers along and show them some of the best practices that you have developed over the years. Hopefully it will translate into more hikes and camping on their part, and consequently more interest in the outdoors. We were on the north shore of Superior this very same weekend, and the waves were just as epic - what a gorgeous spot to capture the lake in her majesty!

Over thirty years ago my Dad, son and I were canoeing a river here in Alaska in the pouring rain. We stopped at a good place and set up camp including the two lightweight rain flys. An older man and his grandson came up landed next to us. They were both shivering and close to hypothermia. We built a big fire and got them warm staying up all night with them. Someone once asked my why I carry two rainflys and I told them I’d rather carry a couple wet rainflys than all my other stuff wet.

Things like that make it memorable. I took a new guy and his 3 sons primitive hammock camping at Cowrock Mtn off the AT recently. 25° w sustained 30+ winds. Right as he hunkered down on night 2 his hammock ripped and he ended up on the ground. I heard nothing due to the wind. He survived the night barely but had bad windburn on his face. He loved the whole experience and can't wait for the next trip!

This video reminded me of my first backpacking trip a few weeks ago, it was also the first bout of bad weather i've had doing hikes/backpacking. I had an experienced friend with me, who was guiding me. the rain unexpectedly took a turn for the worst and didn't stop, to the point it started to flood my friends tent! We had to pack up and seek shelter by the freestanding toilet. The camp site was looking more like a river. The next part of the hike was a fair bit more difficult than normal, but with the weather and our backpacking gear we made the decision to call it, and hike back to civilisation. In the end I really enjoyed it, still had a load of fun!

Loved it - please make more videos about promoting and celebrating the fellowship of men through backpacking! IMO, our society as a whole can benefit from groups of men getting closer to God and each other in nature where they can work as a team through a bit of suffering, then sit around a camp fire discussing how we as men can love God more, love our families more, and become stronger stewards of faith and protectors of our families, friends and communities!

I really love being out in rough weather, understanding the risks added. Once I was in Ireland on the west coast at the cliffs of Moher. There’s some trails to an old watchtower at the edge of the cliffs with a substantial stone wall between you and the drop. The wind was howling with gusts up to 80 mph, so strong it was blowing seawater up from the waves below. These are not small cliffs either! Coming down off the high point I had to lean back against the wind so as to not get pushed down the trail. The trail inland across the Burren wasn’t much better as there’s no vegetation at all to break the wind. Still one of my all time favorite hikes, maybe because of the weather.
