Excerpt from Facebook:
(18 May 2018)
Here's a good documentary from the early 1980s that I am sure many of you will enjoy.
This short doco (from a series called HUMAN FACES OF THE PACIFIC) focuses on a family who are preparing to emigrate to New Zealand. It shows some of the challenges faced by many of our people in preparation for moving to a foreign new land and adapting to a new culture. I am sure many of us have been products of these types of migrations and it was all for mainly the same reasons - better opportunities for families both in the diaspora and in the islands.
__________________________________________________________________
Here is the official synopsis of the film:
The western part of Samoa has been independent of New Zealand since 1962, but a strong chain of emigration to New Zealand continues to tie the two countries together. This film follows a young Samoan family over a period of some weeks before they join the migrant exodus. The young couple experience the tensions of separation from their closely knit families. There is a serious conflict between the couple and the wife's parents, which threatens the marriage. The husband considers going without his wife. Eventually, however, the family comes to an uneasy truce which allows husband and wife to emigrate together.
So hope you all enjoy this clip. I will be posting a couple more docos over the next few weeks.

Seeing her mom crying makes me feel emotional & sad , brings back the days when my mum cries at the airport for me leaving my home country at a young age to start a new life in a foreign country . God bless u all my pacific brothers and sisters who’s leaving their home country to start a new life in a new environment . 🇫🇯❤️

Watching this in 2021, and its a great experience to watch how our people and country in the past looks like, and the big difference back then and now. So much has changed but we still remember and treasure our past in our hearts. Its a great short video from the past and it has a lot of meaning and message behind it. Always remember and know our roots. I'm proud to be Samoan.

Samoan have proportionally high suicide rates. Parents bring up kids to be their servants and take on their financial responsibilities. And in a modern society that pressure fucks kids and young adults up. So they kill themselves because of the pressure. Just a sorry li e of young Samaons that come through my wife's psychological services all saying the same thing.

Wow! great and amazing documetary. If i can recall, that's Taefu Lemi (former MP & Assoc Minister for MNRE) the younger brother in the film from Siufaga, Falelatai,a certified accountant by Profession . His younger brother Tovi'o Taefu was my former Accounting Teacher at Samoa College now the Head Principal of Vaimauga College. The pool shown in the wife's village is at Levi, Saleimoa. Been looking for this doc since i watched it before but lost midway through. Thanks to the Le Faleoo Archive.

Gracious Lord!...we’ve made some huge leaps in terms of “development” since this film was taken (nearly 40yrs). A genuine testimony to our continuous, yet often in vain and albeit desperate diaspora. It’ll be interesting to see a follow up of this young family’s journey. Did they accomplish their aspirations? rather that of their grieving families/communities? Did they survive the challenges as “aliens” in a foreign country? The brain-drain, the multi-facet social ramifications of such mass movements of people..Was it worth it? Perhaps, it really depends on where one’s priorities are and of course, where they stand......Anyway, a well presented piece of gem. A great reference material for Samoa’s overseas dispersion. I can still remember those bumpy unsealed roads, the archaic colonial buildings of Apia, the old Savalalo market, that solid old Motootua hospital etc. and then the glimpses of vintage Samoan village life. I can only reminisce of those fine old days. But,...they are gone and that is the beauty of this film. It is Time immemorial!! Thank-you for sharing this. Tears somehow abound as time catches up with one’s mortality indeed!

The wife 2 can get another husband, and she 2 has only 2 parents, Samoans are brought up to respect their parents, absolutely, but when you make the choice to get married, a husband or a wife takes presidence over parents, otherwise why would you get married, stay single if you want to keep your parents on the throne, indeed respect both equally if possible
