I like that your shop looks worked in as opposed to all those other videos out there that create videos in a sterile environment, shops in the real world look more like yours and your videos are not just another advertisement for some tool or material supplier in order to benefit personally.

Thanks, that shop is definitely worked in. It's a little too unruly even for myself at the moment. Hoping to get some more storage built here soon, and this project cleared up the space for that.

Good to know that the design originated with Norm A. I’ve seen it so many times and wondered. Also, there’s something satisfying about seeing other people’s accumulated under router table dust.

Started watching Norm in the early 90's and owe most of my woodworking knowledge watching Norm and VHS recording many of his NYW episodes. I've been in and out of woodworking ever since and after a recent move now have a little space putting a shop back together again. I've gone through your list of videos and watched a few. Now subscribed I'll be watching many more. Bet you've never heard this before; You have the most pleasant sounding voice I have ever heard, and I don't think I've ever said that before either. Had to get that out there. Back to woodworking, I enjoyed your showing one of Norm's old drawings. Picked up a few of those back in the day. Good stuff. Happy Thanksgiving. Thanks.

Hold your horses. Did you just use the words table saw and clean with water in same sentence (just kidding). Love the update to the shop. I just built a frames for a piece of melamine and attached to my rails by a dado and it slides into place (note I have yet to install the router yet). Wonderful space saver and useful extra workspace. Repurposed wood is awesome. Thank you for sharing. Love your work ethic. Everyone stay safe, happy, warm and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia.

Every now and then, I come across a control panel I built from 20 years ago or so, and I too chuckle at how I did things back then….if your completely satisfied with something you built that long ago, it just means you haven’t learned anything. Excellent job! Exclamation point! Happy Saturday!

It’s not often we see a shop upgrade video from you but this one worked out fantastic, I love to reuse/repurpose things as I have a severe problem when it comes to throwing anything timber based away, that and the fact that I also have an aversion to spending money, in addition I love the fact that of almost all other KZfaqrs your shop resembles mine the most, I have absolutely no idea how other people keep their workshops clean and tidy as mine always looks in a state of disarray at best and downright messy at other times, now I am lucky I have a reasonably large workshop but it still looks cluttered and covered in sawdust even with a dust extractor 🤔🤷never mind let’s just say it’s a work in progress 👌👌👌👍👍👍🇦🇺

I also hate throwing things out, and spending money. I do wish I had more time and money for shop upgrades. Not necessarily to make it fancy. But, to make it more functional and less hazardous. With multiple projects being built at once I find myself tripping and running into things a little too much.

Long Answer : I think a lot of KZfaq ( at least in the beginning and for small channels) isn't just making a quality product, and uploading a quality video. It's about keywords, titles, capitalizing on trending topics, catchy thumbnails, etc. And I just don't have time to engage in or research the business side of KZfaq. For example, this video so far is my best performing video in over a year. And I know it's because the title borders on clickbait. If I had titled this "How to add a router table to a table saw" I can guarantee it wouldn't be performing nearly as well as it is. The problem is this is about as close to clickbait as I'm willing to get. Since the majority of my videos are how to videos I want to title them accurately so people looking to make those things can find those videos. SInce this wasn't a full fledge how to video I went with a more popular title, and it's crazy how well they work.

I made the same router table from Norm Abrams design many years ago. Use it often but do a bit of freehand routing as well. Great video
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks 7 ай бұрын
I also do a lot more freehand routing. But, that’s mainly because as you saw I used that table for storage and it had To be moved to use. It was inconvenient enough to just avoid using it. I’m making some French doors soon which will be mostly router work and figured moving it and squaring everything up again would be smart before that build.

Nice move! I did something similar to my table saw a few years ago. I found that it works really well… until a setup I have going on the router table gets in the way of using the table saw. I can usually just drop the router or remove it by pulling out the router plate but it gets a little annoying and if the fence position is critical it’s really annoying. Pre planing helps too but not always. Not saying this isn’t a good idea. It is and a nice space saver for a small shop. It’s just a little inconvenient sometimes.
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks 7 ай бұрын
I did think about that, and I know it will happen down the road. I'm just hoping it happens infrequently enough that I don't regret moving it. But, I agree and can see especially for fine tuned setups that it would get annoying.

A bit different. Get it? Bit? Ok...ok. So my neighbor will be moving, and he may take most of his shop with him. But one thing he is absolute about keeping is a Delta wood shaper at 3HP and takes 3/4" spindles. But I can see why needing to downsize if not doing alot with routing/shaping.

I just put my router into the table saw too, but I suspended it from the rails and seated it on a cabinet that also holds the (contractor) saw. Will you be rolling yours out from the saw? Or is it firmly attached to the saw?
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks 7 ай бұрын
I made it so it can move, but I have no plans to move it around. Just wanted extra insurance in case I ever need to move it. The fit between the rails is tight enough that it doesn't budge. But, if it starts to wander I can bolt it in place.

I'm always skeptical of perfectly clean shops with all the tools nicely hung on the wall in foam. If you are doing it for a living my tools got put back at the end of each major job, when I did a shop cleanup. So much time is wasted running around for tools, why add to it. I had a similar setup but used my tablesaw fence for my router too, I also had a separate router table, I love routers.

Agreed, most stuff stays out till the particular job is done. Otherwise I find myself just taking out and putting away tools multiple times. But to each their own. I worked for a very nice guy once who was rehabbing an old factory to turn it into a home. After each small job we cleaned EVERYTHING. Drove me crazy, but it worked for him. I watch a guy on here who is an arborist, does a ton of work in his shop but keeps it very tidy, and I get jealous. I like the chaos, but wish things were a little tidier sometimes.

Please don't misunderstand this.... do you ever clean your shop? My shop has plenty of sawdust in the corners like yours and I'm not especially bothered by it. Do you think the clutter and sawdust affect your work? I love to see video of spotless shops but I wonder how much time those people spend cleaning vs. working.
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks 7 ай бұрын
You won't believe this but I sweep at least once a week haha. Small spaces are tough because when even one thing is out of place it looks a mess. The saw dust does get annoying I need better dust collection. The other problem I have is I'm always working on multiple things at once to stay efficient. As something is drying I can pop over to something else, but that also leads to clutter everywhere. I have five projects in progress in the shop right now which just leads to stuff being everywhere. Two of those projects are carvings which means there will be sawdust on everything til they are done, I don't love it, but I've embraced it at this point. Part of moving this router table is that when I have that big built in out of my shop I want to add lots of storage to that side wall to help keep things a little tidier. I will never have one of those immaculate workshops it's just not my style, but I would like this one a little more organized. In conclusion, I do clean but it's a losing battle.
