Honestly man, you've always had a great voice. The difference from then until now is your voice wasn't mature when you got your start so your voice was limited as a child. It's not to say you can't sing well as a child but like you said, no one taught you voice control or how to properly support your voice. You were a good singer then and a great singer now. Props to you bro.

I enjoyed watching your reaction to your own self singing. I am currently taking voice lessons after years of trying to learn on my own. I am seeing tangible improvements and a lot of it had to do with the breath & support of diaphragmatic breathing. Singing properly, as you know, is actually a serious core workout. "i was straining" man your vocal coordination even when you was younger was far above average, that's why you became so good in 7 years.. when i tried to sing at 13 i was like a screaming goat, no jokes lol.. after 5 years i started to understand how to sing without tension, probably the fact that my idol was kurt cobain and i'm like a bass baritone didn't help XD, but yeah 5 years just to do that.. then of course when you understand how to use the instrument you have just to practice and get better, but you my friend started at a really good point.

I hope it's not too late to answer. I recently discover that you need to build a micromuscle in your throat through different exercise and breath management. I have gone through it or 2 weeks and I find myself feel comfortable singing a higher note. So the key is know the right way to build a muscle memory and learn to manage how you breathe.
