@@rm4kt530 I know man, and the sad part is that this Bi Han betrayal *could have worked* too, allow me to explain. I felt that it was rather odd that in the story mode, Shang Tsung was placed into the stock villain role that he was in for decades when the narrative didn't call for it. I also found it doubly weird that the writers gloss over the fact that Liu Kang *purposefully* gave him a meaningless life. With that setup in mind, Shang should've been presented as a tragic person who had his second chance at life to be a decent person (that was given to everyone else) stripped from him before he was even born. That in turn would make him a character dead set on getting revenge against Liu Kang, and rallying those to his cause that also got screwed over; Bi Han being one of them. Since New Era Shang is getting information from "Kronika" (Titan Shang), he can easily inquire about the fates of certain individuals who were reborn. As far as we know, in the OG timeline Bi Han was indoctrinated by the Lin Kuei into being an assassin along with his brother, and the ending of OG MK1 depicts him as wanting to leave the clan, implying he's grown tired of the killing. Not only that, before he could ever change his ways, he was killed by Scorpion, sent to the Netherrealm, and had his humanity stolen from him. Had Shang told Sub that Liu Kang not only removed his chance to forge a greater destiny (he's Liu's lapdog), but also paired up him up with the person that offs him, it'd be a better moment. This revelation combined with his ego would fill Bi Han with enough paranoia to follow Shang, and it would also place a rift between the two brothers. This isn't exactly perfect, but in my head it would be more in line for Bi Han's character to accept Shang's proposal in this scenario than it was in the actual game. Plus, it could also provide some insight into Liu's character because he allowed his biases from the previous timeline to corrupt his judgement; ultimately calling into question whether he should be trusted, and cause Liu to develop more. But I guess Bi Han being an evil edgelord who doesn't care about his Father's death or anyone else is more interesting to the writers :/

It makes total sense though, it was clear his loyalty was with the clan and its restoration over earthrealm, it’s not like it was a sudden unexplained change - it was always a part of his character. Sindel’s doesn’t work because it straight up clashes with her better judgment and her character in that story. Also that sequence with Han standing in the frost mist while Kuai and Smoke show a mutual admiration for each other was just too damn cool.

@@frostyfrenchtoast Let me use an argument that was used on me; it's a brand new timeline. This Bi Han (and Kuai) start from zero. It might "make sense" because of prior dialogue, but that is poor storytelling because it's telling instead of showing. The Lin Kuei were absent for *FIVE* whole chapters, so the only thing we know about Bi Han's character is that he sometimes complained to his brother that the Lin Kuei should govern Earthrealm. Does that establish that he might be willing to betray his brother to gain that power? No. Does that establish that he is utterly weak to materialistic temptations like gold and an army to command? No, we didn't even know that Bi Han had a problem funding the clan before he entered Ying Castle. Does him saying that he let his dad die count as characterization? Hardly, because again it's a case of telling and not showing. It's circular writing; Bi Han wants power because he wants to rule over Earthrealm, but he wants to rule Earthrealm because that will give him power. This could have worked if the story SHOWED the audience at any point that Bi Han feels trapped by the responsibility of protecting Earthrealm and resentful being under Liu Kang's heel, but it didn't. Perhaps comparing this to Sindel's retcon was a poor choice of words; this story could have done anything and everything with the required plot point of the falling out between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, *two of the most iconic characters in the entire franchise,* and instead they went with this. That entire part of the story suffers because somehow, incredibly IMO, those two ninjas weren't given enough time in the spotlight. Compare that to the things Johnny, Kenshi, Reptile, Baraka and Ashrah had going on in their segment of the story.

@@LOWBORN-the-LOATHSOME We know that Bi Han thinks the Lin Kuei deserves *more* than just defending Earthrealm. We see how he doesn’t even view Smoke as family despite him being taken in by their father, and repeatedly mocked their father and the way he ran the clan. He’s stated he thinks the clan should be more than just protectors, and take a more proactive role. This tells me that Bi Han views the Lin Kuei in a fundamentally separate way from both Smoke and Kuai, one that should be a powerful ruling entity instead of a reactive defensive clan. Kuai is at complete odds with Bi Han philosophically, so their conflict was a given imo. As for Bi Han *acting* on mere statements, well that’s what we see in the story. He doesn’t view himself as “betraying” his brother really, more so that Kuai lacks his same vision for his ideal Lin Kuei. Because again, these two literally view the clan in fundamentally opposite ways; so yes you’re right Bi Han has betrayed Kuai, but it’s not like it’s an out of character or sudden betrayal - it’s just Bi Han acting out his ideals. To Han, it’s Kuai and Smoke who are the traitors if anything. I think you’re correct in your self assessment that the Sindel comparison isn’t totally accurate - I think that’s comparing two different character archetypes. In my opinion Bi Han’s actions aren’t really surprising or out of character or sudden at all, we also learn he let his father die specifically to inherit the grandmaster title and shape the clan in his own way. I don’t think it’s poor storytelling because it’s actually a pretty basic progression: Bi Han’s motivations were insanely clear to us, Shang gives Bi Han the opportunity and Bi Han takes it fully. To me the good writing comes in with the difference of perspective between the brothers. To the viewer it’s complete and utter betrayal, to Bi Han he’s merely returning his clan to its deserved glory, and those brothers are impeding his clan’s restoration efforts. Kuai of course shares the viewer’s position, viewing Bi Han as an utter traitor who’s trampling on the good will of those around him for a power trip. These kinds of conundrums comes from solid (if not just standard) character writing.

I definitely think that's a little bit disappointing, because we never got a chance to get to know Onaga in the modern age. Out of course like to see him as a main villain, but I would also have to demand that he be a different kind of emperor than Shao Khan was with different reasons for what he does.
