It's crazy because in the 90's we thought this was humorous and laughed at the lyrics. I haven't heard this song since then until now, and he change my feelings about this song. It's not a funny song anymore. It's tragic and sad.
@dipsydoodle7988
@dipsydoodle7988 3 жыл бұрын
It's interesting to me that in the 90s we thought these lyrics were humorous and everyone who listens to this song today sees it as depressing. I think it's both. There's some sarcasm in there and he's very aware and allowing the situation. If you dig deep tho, I guess it is profound. People really do put up with amazing amounts of garbage. Pretty Fly For a White Guy is another one of these. Hilarious on the surface, but dig a bit deeper and it's a definite self-esteem thing. They have a ton of great songs. Lyrics are always on point.

an amazing song. Offspring rocked mid 90s. More upbeat songs are "Pretty Fly" and "Come Out and Play". Oh yeah,I like the new lid, bros

Dexter (singer) has said in interviews that he was writing songs about what he was seeing around himself. This is one of those bands that has a lot to say on the current state of things, but it is so slyly done on some of their songs that most people do not really see it. Other songs by them to try: Come Out & Play (aka Keep em' Separated) - was his commentary on gang violence and school violence in East L.A. about the time of the Rodney King riots. Gone Away - was written while Dexter was mourning the loss of his girlfriend who had recently died in an automobile crash. The pain, frustration and futility (wanting to switch places) is evident in this song. Kristy, Are You Doing Okay? - was written for a girl that he knew when he was a child. The neighborhood seemed aware that she was being abused, but none of the adults seemed to be acting on this information and Dexter and his friends were too young and did not know what to do. The song seems like an apology and I hope you are alright. Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) - this is another example of what they do so well. This one is addressed to poseurs of any kind. People that clearly do not care about the music, culture , etc... that they are trying to inhabit. The band went for a 'taking the piss out of' (mocking tone) approach to keep from sounding preachy. Around this time you had a lot of young boys (men) in the midwest (as far out of Compton as they could be) acting like they were gangsters when they were clearly doing it to be trendy rather than understanding that culture. Basically poseurs involved in that community for all the wrong reasons. The Kids Aren't Alright (see you got this one already) was written when he went back to his hometown after several years away. His peers and the town did not seem to be progressing & they were stuck.

I've seen these guys live a half dozen times, all at smaller concerts in Canada. In '96 I had a friend drive me to Calgary under false pretenses, because she always had the CD playing in her car and she had never been to a concert before. I made an excuse to stop by the arena and surprised her with tickets. They are a great live act and have many great memories attached to them. Glad your enjoying them.

Love this song, the bassline is catchy as hell and it's a homage to both men and women who can't get out a bad relationships because the think they do not deserve better.

A lot of '90s tunes were dark lyrics wrapped in a pop melody. Check out Gone Away. That's my favorite from them.
