I love how you talk to Blakely. You have such patience. Example instead of just getting her away from the trash. You go over, and encourage her to close the door. She will get the message oh mommy does not want me here. She will know this door has to stay closed.

Hi Rachel, I had a cousin that was born at 26 weeks. She was put in an incubator. As soon as she was born. The oxygen stopped working. So she was without oxygen for a bit. So that caused her to have CP. The medicine and therapy in 1964 wasn't what it is today. My cousin (Paula) passed away from cancer when she was 40yrs old. Beckham is doing really great. I believe that he will be able to walk and talk one day. Because he has such awesome parents that love and care for him. ❤️❤️

My best friend’s son has cerebral palsy. He is a quad. However, he feeds himself. His hands are not at all flexible has Beckhams. At around Beckham’s age is when she started introducing him to using eating utensils. She started with a modified spoon and a bowl that had a suction cup on the bottom, to keep it in place. The only reason she taught him to feed himself is because I asked her why she didn’t at least try and see if he could be taught to do it. She admitted that the real reason she didn’t try was because she was convinced it would be a big mess to clean up. She thanks me all the time, that I brought the idea of self feeding up. Her son is 34 yrs old.now. He is a delight. He struggles to talk, but can hold his own in any conversation. He gets around great with his electric wheelchair…even though his hands are very clenched. He also has a baclofen pump, which delivers the drug directly into the spinal canal. This means of drug delivery works well for his legs, and keeps him very comfortable. Keep up the good work! The best is yet to come!!!

i recommend getting a pill cutter! they're super cheap and it makes sure that its a perfect half every time some medicines are REALLY hard to cut with a knife, so it might be even more useful in the future

I'm serious about this...Beckham looks better in every way...physically with regards to his CP. He consistently does things I'd thought he could not yet do. I am So happy about his progress in eating, sitting, standing, emoting and really looking at you without trouble. You're doing such a great job. I work in a school similar to the one Beckham will be attending and I am 99% sure they will do feeding therapy with him. In our school both the speech therapists as well as the occupational therapists work on feeding with our students. It will probably be the speech therapist that works on it with him as he is still working on eating different types of foods with different temperatures and textures. The occupational therapist usually focuses on using different types of utensils and bowls/plates/cups as students begin to work on feeding themselves. The teachers, aides, and therapists all work together as a team so that progress can be made so it is possible that everyone will work together. I would definitely let the team at school know that feeding is a goal you would like them to work on although many therapists and teachers working in a special education school have some sort of feeding/mealtime goals (my students are almost 21 and we still work on mealtime goals such as using a napkin and throwing away their own garbage). Another thing I would recommend doing is asking the school team and your hospital doctors/therapists are able to speak to each other and share notes, progress, treatments, etc. so that everyone is on the same page and are all working together. It can be confusing and delay or even cause skills to regress if school is doing things one way, parents are doing it another way, and doctors/therapists at the hospital are recommending another way. There can also be skills he has already mastered or shouldn’t be worked on for one reason or another and the school should definitely be aware of those things. The parents can be the middle man and relay information back and forth but occasionally details can be missed or interpreted differently. In my school the parents are required to sign a release form that allows the school team to contact doctors/therapists/home care teams etc. (basically anyone not on the school staff). Many parents will sign the release but ask to be present at any meetings/phone calls and be cc’d on any emails which is in my opinion the best case scenario because then everyone is on the same page. This is something that will benefit Beckham and his school team especially because his birth to 3 program has worked with him and you guys for many years and knows what works and what doesn’t which will really help them get a head start when working with Beckham. I’m not sure what the policies and procedures are at Beckham’s new school but it never hurts to ask!! If they can’t contact others outside the school I would then recommend you bringing his IEP and any reports from the school to doctor/therapy appointments and share these documents with them so they can see what he is working on, the progress he is making, and they can give you feedback that you can share with the school team. As I say all the time the WonderPets song is one I live by in my classroom…… “What’s gonna work??? TEAMWORK!!!”

So happy the baclofen is helping so much! The tablets should be scored and you can lay it on the counter and press each side to break in half! Hope that helps!

I agree that the child locks might be a good idea but I also noticed Sissy likes dump and fill activity so maybe take a wet wipe container and put some different objects/toys in it that she can dump and fill/open and shut or even sensory bins that she can explore and use that curiousity safely.

I don't know if you'll have to ask or not but shopping carts for special needs exist in the US. They have a seat like on the stroller he sits in. If theres an accessibility desk that would be where you would need to ask for it most likely. They might not leave any out to avoid being misused and would only have a limited number of them.
