I can't do this when plowing snow...can you? Where I live it is prohibited by law to plow or push snow across the street or highway. This can make plowing snow off the driveway take twice as long. After this last winter storm there was just enough snow to have to clear the driveway with the Kioti CK2610.

If you think about it, Dan, snow on your property is yours. If you push it across the road you are making it someone else's problem. I bought a seven foot bucket and it is way better than a snow pusher. It makes moving snow so much faster and works great in the wood yard.

We moved two years ago, but our former town had a no plow across the road rule. I used to do it, but made sure the winrows were cleaned up and I pushed well off of the road. When they repaved our street, I was talking to the town foreman handling the project. I had noticed they had flattened a large space by adding extra gravel directly across the street from our driveway. He pointed it out to me that they had done it. I commented that I knew I wasn’t really supposed to push across the street. He said, "no, you aren’t, but we keep an eye on those who do. You keep the street clean and push far enough off the road so our highway blades don’t hit your piles. Just thought we’d give you some extra space as a sign of appreciation." So, my extra time making sure I left the road cleaner that it was before I plowed paid off. Might not be the same in other municipalities, but my traditionally hard ass road department recognized my effort.

Same here in Maine but I know the guys that plow and I do allot for them and they don't say anything, plus I keep it clean with nothing that hinders their job or equipment. I will also go down the road a ways to push back banks on another road that they can't do with the big plow and clean the drifts of my road periodically so it don't bother people's driving and they don't have to. They appreciate my efforts and acknowledge that I'm trying to help them, so I hear absolutely no complaints.

At the end of my driveway I always push all of the snow to the opposite side of my drive from the direction that the muni snowplow comes from. That way the muni guy pushes very little snow into my drive when he comes by. Actually, he sees what I've done and takes care to move out into the road ever so little so as to dump even less into my driveway. I generally don't even have to redo it after he goes by unless we get dumped on with 8" - 15".

Here in Alaska it’s illegal they won’t bother property owners too much but if they catch a plow truck doing it it will get you a ticket. It might make it easier for someone people to just push across the road but there’s several reason’s not to. 1: people pushed snow across the road and removing any traction sand or gravel. This has put people in the ditch 2: it’s really dangerous when dealing with slush with runoff and refreezing

After testing some things, we came away with a new 2022 Kioti RX7320, and picked up a 9 ft Hiniker scoop plow to deal with our big snows... which of course we never received this year! 😂 Oh well.

As far as I know, our municipality doesn't have anything against pushing the snow across the road. I'm guessing there was a handful of "bad apples" that would leave a bunch of snow in the middle of the road, after they got done pushing it across the road. So, now the towns/states just eliminate the entire scenario, and ban the practice. ?? Thanks!!

Dan it is illegal to push snow across the road here too. There are some valid reasons for the law. Many people wouldn't spend the time to make sure they got all the snow off the road leaving piles for vehicles to hit. If the Town plows have already cleaned and salted the roads you will be removing the salt they just put down. If all the ditches were filled with snow they would take longer to melt and probably flooding would occur. Yes it's extra work to keep it on your own property but you have a nice tractor for the chores.

When you push snow across the street into the ditch across from your driveway, its like you are taking your snow problem and giving it to someone else to clean up. The ditches don't need your driveway snow, as it has a hard enough time taking all the snow from the road. Plus your piles of snow in the ditch turn into one big pile of ice that is very hard to move with any equipment. The piles of snow from driveways near the road put there by homeowners accumulate more snow by wind causing snow drifts. Don't push snow across the road.

Can't push snow across the road here either for about the last 30 years. They used to have a grader with a wing pushing the banks back a few days after the trucks plowed. Then they put wings on the plow trucks to push the banks back as they plowed. People would push snow out of their driveways across the road and it would be in a pile. When the next snow came, the wing on the plow truck would hit the pile which might have partially melted and re-froze and they would break the wing off. The wings on the trucks aren't as strong and the trucks are going faster. Unless you have a telehandler, you can't push it far enough off the road.

The statute you are referring to is WI statute 346.94(5) which states: Placing injurious substance on highway. No person shall place or cause to be placed upon a highway any foreign substance which is or may be injurious to any vehicle or part thereof. It's not that you can't plow across the road, the problem is that many people leave lines or chunks of snow or ice which can cause accidents especially with the little compact cars many drive around in these days. I've had to deal with this one a number of times when I was a town supervisor. I should add that the other problem is that usually with a snowplow on a pickup they don't get it off the shoulder far enough which causes a problem with wings on the town/county plows.

Hi Dan, what size is your tractor shelter? We can't plow snow across the road here in NY either.

Same here. In the city, all snow is to be kept on your property, not pushed into the street. Also, you are required to keep the sidewalk, even though it is not your property legally, clear or you could get a ticket. Out in rural areas, the same as you, all snow is supposed to stay on private property. Also, a private company or individual is NOT allowed to plow a government/public street/area.

Yup, fine-able offense where I live. I wouldn't say "illegal", but they'll steal some money if they catch you. While I'm driving around plowing, if I see someone who has done it, I drop my plow and clean the road off. Once it freezes it can become a mess if the wind rows are tall enough.

It's illegal in New York also but I'm a believer that if the snow is in my driveway, it's my problem. I don't have the right to move it to someone else's property regardless if it makes my job easier. Been plowing for almost 40 years and have always felt that way. It's a general rule in my life to not make my problem into someone else's.
