“I Can’t Feed My Three Young Children!” Bank Account Closure Victim Speaks Out

Nigel Farage has accused a prestigious private bank of being “dishonest” amid a dispute over whether his bank account was closed because of his political views.
The former leader of the UK Independence Party said his account with high-net-worth bank Coutts had been closed and he was being refused accounts with other banks due to political reasons.
It followed a report in the BBC suggesting that the Brexit leader fell below the financial threshold needed to hold an account with Coutts.
Alexandra Tolstoy tells Julia that she has “absolutely no idea” why her bank account was closed by NatWest.
“I have told them that I have three young children. I can’t feed them if I don’t have a bank account!”
A NatWest spokesman said it treated compliance as “a matter of priority” but it could not comment on the specifics of the case

Although banks are commercial businesses and should possibly be ably to sell their services to whomsoever they choose it is far more complicated than that. Water companies can't decide that they will turn off the water supply to anyone whose opinions they don't like. Banking facilities are an essential of modern life. A serial rapist, violent mugger or a murderer will be provided with banking facilities on release. As far as we know Nigel Farage is none of these things but in the eyes of some he is worse because of his involvement with Brexit - a move supported in a massive public referendum by a huge number of people in the country.

There is in the UK the Banking Code which says they can, only if it meets certain criteria and they don't have to say why. However saying the relationship broke down because the bank / building society doesn't like someone's opinion is absurd and gives good grounds for a challenge to the Banking Ombudsman.

This, in my humble opinion, is genuinely Orwellian. Banks closing people's accounts down, is scary enough, the implications it will have, on "daily living", is nightmare inducing, but to also, not be provided with an answer, as to why the accounts were closed, gives one no right to defend oneself. How is this lawful ?? This could now affect every single one of us, if we don't "toe the line", or dare to disagree with governments policies or stances, over any single matter. Since when were banks given the freedom to discriminate on the political idealogies, or the surname, of their account holders?? Honestly, I'm at a stage, where nothing surprises me anymore, with the levels of censorship, cancellations of people by big tech, to stop voices speaking freely, and close down dissent, is at a level, I never thought I'd see in my lifetime. The United Kingdom screams all around the world, the word "democracy", the phrase, "The Mother of All Parliaments" etc etc, but in the 21st century, if you don't have a bank account, you have been excluded from society, and cannot buy or sell, or pay for anything. How is this a democratic move ?? What????? Why????? Who????? What gives the banks the right to discriminate against certain people?? Why is this being done to people?? Who overall, gave the nod, to banks to start closing accounts randomly?? This is very sinister.

I keep saying this, boycott Natwest. I live in Germany, and brits living in Europe that require to still have a UK bank account to have pensions etc paid into by the UK Government, have had their accounts closed by Natwest. There is a massive problem at the moment, where people in high positions of power and responsibility are targeting people that aren't onboard with the current agenda. Natwest has obviously been infiltrated by an extreme Lefty, who is abusing their position. Leave Natwest before this happens to you too. Lets do a "Bud-Light" against Natwest.

Remember when the public bailed the banks out when they lost everyone's money? This is such a dangerous thing that shouldn't be possible, you can be locked out of society with actions like this, and to think they even want a central digital currency which would be even worse for the public. The only time they should be able to close an account is if that account was involved in illegal activity like funding terrorism or money laundering etc.

Went to several banks trying to open another bank account and was denied. I don't have political affiliation, or any other situation dimed unfited . This is happening everywhere in Europe. I went to the court and I won. Even then, I could only find one bank accepting to open a bank account. Meanwhile, I wasn't able to withdraw my money or transfer it to other bank. I now fear that my British bank will close my account too as I have some transactions that could be a bit problematic to explain as it's payments for certain things I buy and sell privately. I think it would feel in a similar way as if I lived in he Soviet Union as I don't feel I can trust neither the government, banks or anyone else, not the police, not the justice system.

@@user-xs9835 Well I moved to the UK from Norway in 2003, when arrived I tried to open an account, it took me three months! The bank dragged it out and I am not sure why, they said it was "because of EU-rules" etc. But some years later I needed to open account in Germany, I just went into the bank and came out 30 minutes later with the signed documents on a new account, and I did not even live in Germany, and Germany was of course then also a member of EU! Banks are notoriously difficult to deal with, specially in the UK but I have only experience form three countries so who knows what it's like in other parts of the world.

When I found out about the overdraft, I went into the BS & paid the overdraft off. It was under £200. At that point, in Branch, they took my card off me & closed my account, as my income had dropped below their limit. Since then I have only had access to the ' savings' account, and, due to low income, have been refused bank accounts with other banks. In a normal free country with a functional justice system yes that would be possible, not possible in the UK or almost any other western nation. Western nations have turned into dystopian societies where democracy has stopped working. It's very similar to east block communist countries. For example Poland and East Germany had elections and they even had many different political parties, the only problem was that only "approved" parties was allowed. Same as in western nations now as to start a new political party with a normal agenda will immediately be marked extreme right wing and killed off with propaganda and actions like this, denying the political party a bank account for example, very effective. The worst thing is that people in the old communist countries KNEW they didn't live in democratic countries, in western countries people are so brain washed they still believe they are in a democracy!

There needs to be an independent panel that can look at the evidence banks rely upon to close accounts including any 'perceived' criminal activity to ascertain whether their action is legal and proportional. Where it's not then those impacted should be able to claim compensation and their banking arrangememts reinstated. Banks should not be able to hide behind anti-money laundering legislation (tipping off) to refuse giving reasons why they are withdrawing their services. This is very worrying. I bank with NatWest and am disgusted by their behaviour

Just get on anyway. If you've made an offer to pay and they refuse to take it then that's their problem. Trust me I'm a bus driver, very few drivers would even challenge you, it's not worth the hassle.

That's been the case for a good few years now. I also live in London. I was in Kent yesterday. I payed cash no problem.

Such banks will lose billions $s for their extraordinarily unjustifiable and unconscionable actions

They won't lose a penny. Only those normal folk who work for the bank will lose when the business closes and they lose jobs.

I’m less concerned about preserving my right to have a bank account that I am about preserving my right NOT to have one.

This happened to me in 2020 just before the very first lockdown in March so most of the 6o days was lost during lockdown... every where was shut so I was unable to open a new account that promptly and after Covid lockdown it took months in any case... It was impossible to move the monies at the existing bank... on top of that once they reopened they did not put any consideration for 40+ days of the 60 day duration that was lost during the lockdown... It was brutal ...
