I have wanted to learn to meditate for a long time, and this is the best video I have seen. I think I will re-watch it many times. You remind me of Eckhart Tolle quite a bit, which is a compliment. Your teaching style is a really good fit for me. I just came across your channel today and have already watched a bunch of your videos. THANK YOU! ❤❤❤ P.S. Something that was helpful to me was thinking of my thoughts as passing clouds, being the observer/ awareness of the thoughts, and then releasing the thought like it was a cloud blowing away with the wind. This is not my original idea, but I wanted to share it in case it's helpful to someone reading the comments.

Brilliant video. Very enlightening as to how meditation can and can’t be at every moment. Just brilliant. I live in the past and the 7mins of meditation bought me back to the here and now and it also gave me some clarity on why possibly I keep going back in time.

Every meditation I tried before said for me to close my eyes and I really enjoyed the experience with the eyes opened, I thought it was way easier for me to stay aware of the present moment and not lose myself in thoughts. Also I enjoyed your more realistic approach to meditation, it made me feel better about myself, you described exactly as it is and I feel like no one else does that, they usually try to sell it as this amazing experience and it’s just not always like that. So thank you, you inspired me to keep trying to meditate!

Meditating can be so hard for me because I am such a high energy person. Though I do agree that it is so helpful and healthy.Where did you first learn to meditate from? Just wondering what a good starting point would be.

Hi Daniel: What a great question! I do think it is most effective to learn to meditate with a group. I began with the Integral Yoga Institute in NYC in the early 90s. That won't be an option now with social isolation! But there are some online classes. High energy is great and doesn't have to be an impediment - and meditation won't slow you down the rest of the day :). If anything, it helps me feel more centered and clear while being energetic. Hope that helps!

Did the 7 minute meditation 🧘‍♀️ on a train. This time passed very soon for me. I’ve had several major thoughts bringing me back to my past (my eyes became full of tears then) and nearest future, but I quickly refocused my gaze and brought myself back to my breath. Thank you for this video. I think I’ll definitely give meditation several more tries. I am just not sure if I should first do this with a professional or I can start trying myself?

Hi: Many people start meditation by themselves. I do have a playlist with meditation videos that may be helpful:kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l7J3m5WWlcvSnHU.html. However, I often recommend that people look nearby for a center to join - it is super helpful to have a teacher and a group of people to meditate with!

I also feel the same, time slows down. I do it eye closed but I'm not very regular. For me it was calming. I was curious about your years long practice with meditation and mindfulness, if I may ask... How this practice changed you as a person? Thanks to you, it was my first open eye meditation session.

Hi Abhijeet: What a great question! I'd say it changed me a LOT as a person over the years. I'm more patient and more calm. I feel incredible clarity in my life, which I did not before I started. I've made much better choices in my life. I'm more open-hearted and compassionate. Have you noticed changes since you started?

@@BarbaraHeffernan Thank you, for sharing your experience. It means a lot. As, I said earlier I'm on and off with meditations, but with limited practice I had, I have observed that I'm more aware of 'now' and how I spend my day. I'm less on auto mode when I'm regular with meditations. On instant side- Meditation makes me think clear and have calming effect but not all the time, lets say 75% of the time. It's really astonishing for me to know that you have decades of continuous practice of meditation and mindfulness. You are truly inspiring, I will try to stick to incorporate it in my daily schedule. May be some other day, you may share with us how you stick with your practice or tips for continuity. :)

I have flashbacks when I try to meditate and I have physical feelings of the abuse and come away in a panic. I think it makes me feel off guard or too relaxed and unprotected.
@BarbaraHeffernan
@BarbaraHeffernan 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear this, though it is not uncommon for survivors of abuse. The free "mini-course" I have might be helpful for this: awakenjoy.thinkific.com/courses/the-aah-mini-series (I consider it pre-meditation almost). Or I'd recommend trying yoga, grounding exercises, chi gong or another movement mindfulness practice.

That wasn't so bad. Had to let a cat out of the house, but otherwise the time went pretty fast. The fact I can steer my thoughts back to breath and sound makes it okay to have thoughts and still get something out of the quiet time. Thanks.

Are we allowed to meander with our thoughts or must we always dismiss them one we become aware and return to the breathing? I really enjoyed it by the way. 🙂
@BarbaraHeffernan
@BarbaraHeffernan 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sunglassesjohn: So glad you enjoyed it!! Of course, you are "allowed" to meander with your thoughts :)... although with the mindfulness meditation, the practice is to come back to the breath whenever you notice you are meandering - non-judmentally, gently, and just continue to return to your breath.

I've tried so many times but it always ends up with me feeling frustrated and resentful, a negative experience everytime. I have a C-PTSD diagnosis which is probably making the attempts so unpleasant. Very envious of those that get something out of this practise.

Checkout everything polyvagal theory for C-ptsd as well as the "Crappy Childhood Fairy" channel as she is quite good. Try Samantha meditation (concentration) as taught in the Theravadan tradition. Start at 5 min (yes 5min) of doing it right and build from there. I like my current teacher Bhante Suddhaso of Buddhists Insights channel. Best.
