Geoguesser being such a success is a bit shocking to me. I feel like a lot of the people who like playing this probably didn't even enjoy Geography in school. The power of gamefying an activity.

I think rather than just gamifying it, it displays things in a way that genuinely piques people's interest. Much more than the strict, content driven sorta "forced" learning experience that school can be. In Geoguessr you see the value in geography through "practice" - through the immersive Google Street View environment you see the language being spoken, the geography, the poverty level, the architecture... and it's sort of an anthropological thing too. Also I think the popularity of Geoguessr probably went up during lockdown when no one could travel

@@darkthunder3125 it literally is timed, the faster you do it the higher you get on the leaderboard. Just look at the very end of this video, in the score breakdown it shows you your time on each round.

The really sad thing about Tom getting a prefect score in a play along is he couldn’t submit it because you can’t submit challenge link ones to the leader board (you could do it on a second account and then get a perfect score)

Replaying now it's crazy how the difficulty has changed. The Turkey round is made trivial by a sign that says the name of the city, same for Brazil (sign on the bus), Chile round now is a bit harder because you can't make out the name of the Santa Maria street and you only have the other one to guide you and the Indonesia no longer has any signs mentioning Bali, but if you manage to figure out where on Bali is Jimbaran it's much easier to get an exact guess.

That's how my brother learned piano. Our teacher tried having us go by the books, but he always did his own thing instead and she eventually gave in and just taught him what he wanted to learn. He learned Jaws, Jurassic Park, Avengers theme, Imperial March, Indiana Jones, Superman, etc. And now he writes his own music and plays by ear.
